1 . McCormick Place in Chicago is the largest convention center in North America. It’s covered in glass, which is enjoyable for humans but deadly for birds. On Oct 5, nearly 1000 birds were found dead after having collided (碰撞) with the building’s glass walls. Most of them died on the spot because of broken bones in their heads.
One key reason is the glass. The birds get fooled by it. During the day, the birds fly toward it as it reflects (反射) a perfect image of the sky and nearby trees. As night falls, the bright light from glass buildings attracts (吸引) the birds, who are usually guided by the light of the moon and stars. The recent collision occurred between the night of Oct 4 and early next morning, when the lights in the building were on for an event.
Every year, nearly one billion birds collide with glass in the US, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. In China, bird collisions are also common. In the autumn of 2022 and the spring of 2023, the National Anti-bird Collisions Action Alliance reported a total of 190 cases of bird collision, which included several types of birds listed as second-class protected wildlife.
These sad stories could have been avoided if action had been taken. Many countries and regions have put forward building design ideas to help keep birds safe. These include using less glass in building walls and adding bird-friendly materials and stickers (贴纸) onto the buildings’ walls. Turning off lights at night also helps avoid bird collisions.
Apart from regulations (规定) for bird-friendly building design, we can also do our part to save birds by putting stickers on the glass windows in our homes and closing the curtains (窗帘) at night.

a In the heart of a seed Buried deep, so deep, A dear little plant Lay fast asleep. “Wake!” said the sunshine, “And creep to the light.” “Wake!” said the voice. Of the raindrops bright. The little plant heard And it rose to see What the wonderful Outside world might be. | b Tea is the leaf of an evergreen shrub which grows in many parts of the world, such as China, Japan and India. The tea plant has green leaves and white flowers. At certain seasons the young leaves are gathered. They are then dried, rolled, and packed in boxes. Two kinds of tea, black and green, are most popular. The difference in color between these two teas is due to different ways of drying the leaf. |
c Once or twice a little leaf was heard to cry, as leaves often do, when a gentle wind is blowing. And the twig said, “What is the matter, little leaf?” “The wind,” said the leaf, “just told me that one day it would pull me off, and throw me on the ground to die.” The twig told it to the branch, and the branch told it to the tree. When the tree heard it, it rustled all over, and sent word back to the trembling leaf. “Do not be afraid,” it said. “Hold on tight, and you shall not go off till you are ready.” | d Nearly all flowers turn towards the sunlight, as if they love it. This can be seen by watching plants that are standing near a window. The flowers will all bend towards the sunlight, if the pots are allowed always to stand in the same position. But by turning them round a little every day, while the flowers are opening, the plants can be made to show flowers on all sides. |

Welcome back home! On Sept 25, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer(首席财务官)Meng Wanzhou, 49, arrived in Shenzhen, Guangdong, after being illegally held(非法拘留)for nearly three years in Canada, Xinhua reported.
“After more than 1, 000 days of suffering(痛苦), I finally returned to the motherland,” Meng said after she got off the plane. She described the motherland, the Party and the government as the shining(闪亮的)light that led her on the long journey home.
On Dec 1, 2018, Meng was held in Canada because the US charged(指控)her with fraud(欺诈). The US wanted to take her to the US for trial(审讯). Meng pleaded not guilty(不认罪)to the charge and finally was free to leave Canada on Sept 24 local time.
“This is a political case(政治案)trying to break Chinese high-tech companies(such as Huawei),” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Sept 25. Meng’s safe return shows that the Chinese government has the will and ability to protect the rights(权力)of Chinese people and companies, according to Hua.

7 . Water shortages influence so many lives. The company Watergen produced a new machine to help solve this problem. The machine, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can produce up to 30 liters of water a day. More importantly, it can produce clean water out of air.
GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter(过滤器)to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air then passes through a room where heating and cooling turns steam in the air into water. This water is then passed through several more filters, and minerals are added to make it healthier and better tasting. Finally, the water is kept in a tank where it is continually recycled to keep it fresh.
The heating and cooling process, called GENius, is far more energy-efficient than other technologies that produce water from air. It produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour(千瓦时). Watergen has other products that use this same technology in a larger size, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day.
As a company, Watergen aims to provide drinking water to the billions of people who don’t have safe drinking water at home. Last year Watergen’s large-size products were given to the local government in Brazil, Vietnam and India.
Watergon tries to help the environment by reducing waste caused by plastic bottles. People can put the water from GENNY into reusable bottles so that plastic ones don’t get used and thrown away. It also calls for saving energy. There are even two types of GENNY: one that uses the electrical power supply and another that runs on energy from solar power. The latter one is particularly useful for villages or other areas not connected to an electrical network.
Watergen’s technology is sure to help many people around the world as well as help take care of our planet.

8 . If we want to find out what kind of technology people used in the past, we normally have to depend on archaeologists to find ruined(毁坏) buildings and parts of tools or instruments or machines. Archaeologists then try to reconstruct(修复), sometimes with the help of computer technology, what these ancient buildings and objects must have looked like, and how they might have been made. Sometimes historians are lucky and find an ancient document with a written description of these ancient buildings and objects.
We can understand, then, why Chinese historians were so excited when they found cave paintings which show ancient science. They found these paintings in the world-famous Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. There are 500 man-made caves with a history of at least 1,600 years. Almost all of these caves have paintings on their ceilings or walls and they date from the 4th to 14th centuries. Wang Jinyu is an expert on these cave paintings also called frescoes(壁画) and he says, “We discovered frescoes with scientific and technological content in almost all of the caves which have frescoes.” According to the Xinhua News Agency, these cave paintings provide evidence(证据) of “scientific and technological inventions by ancient Chinese in maths, physics, chemistry, geography, traffic and transportation,…etc.”
Among the discoveries that experts have made are cave paintings showing ancient techniques(技术) of pottery(陶器) making and wine production as well as paintings showing ancient weaving(编织) machines and then toothbrushes! The paintings also give some evidence of the lifestyle at the time with, for example, pictures of people boiling milk over 1,000 years ago. Experts believe that there is more evidence to be found, but even now the caves are a wonderful natural museum. If the walls and ceilings of the caves were all put together, they would form a tapestry(壁毯), 20 kilometers long and 2 meters high!
It won’t be possible to travel back in time — that only happens in films — but visiting these caves would be the nearest experience you could get to travelling back in time.

At 40°F(4.44°C), water is so cold that most people would freeze. But this swimmer Lynne Cox is not like most people. She became the first person to swim from Little Diomede in Alaska to Big Diomede in Russia in the Bering Strait. Cox made it hard to explain for scientists who didn’t think the swim was possible.
Cox’s Advantages
Most people would freeze to death in such cold water, but Lynne Cox can stand cold water temperatures. She has trained her body to get used to the very cold conditions. Body structure also helps Cox stay warm. Compared with most people, Cox has a double fat layer(脂肪层). This fat layer acts as natural insulation(隔热材料).
From Cold to Colder
After the Diomedes challenge, Cox headed south! She wanted to be the first person to swim a mile in Antarctica(南极洲). “Whales and dolphins in Antarctica both have body fat to stay warm,” Cox said before the swim. “Their fat is very thick while mine will be more like a cotton sweater. But I’m not going to be in the sea as long as they are.” Her natural insulation helped her stay in for 25 minutes; long enough to swim 1.22 miles where no human had ever swum before.
