3 . I’ve never been the kind of person to say, “it’s the thought that counts” when it comes to gifts. That was until a couple of weeks ago, when my kids gave me a present that blew me away.
For years now, I’ve been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me, this house is much more than just a building. In the front room, there’s a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines, marking the progress of my children’s growth. Every growth stage is marked in grey, with each child’s name and the date they were measured. Most people I know have been featured on a wall like this, or at least had a wall like it in their home.
Of all the objects and all the memories, it’s this one thing in a home that’s the hardest to leave behind. Friends I know have returned home after work only to discover their wall of heights has been freshly painted over. A new paint job wouldn’t normally be greeted by tears, but erasing that evidence of motherhood hurts more than it should. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress, right there for everyone to see.
Over the years, I’ve talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, even though the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing. So one day, while I was at work, my children decided to do something about it.
They hired Jacquie Manning, a professional photographer whose work is about capturing (捕捉) the beautiful things in life, from clear lakes and skies to diamonds and ballgowns. She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, took photos of the hundreds of drawings and lines, little grey fingerprints (手印), and old marks. Somehow, she managed to photograph all those years of memories perfectly. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, transforming them into a beautiful history of my family.
Three weeks later, my children’s wonderful gift made its way to me—a life-size photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth.

4 . It’s hard to turn down junk food. However, eating too much is bad for your body, especially if you’re between the ages of 10 and 19. “Junk food shapes teenage brains in ways that make their ability to think, learn and remember weaker. It can also make it harder to control bad behaviors. It may even up a teen’s risk of mental (精神上的) problems,” said Amy Reichelt, a scientist at Western University, Canada.
Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies about how poor food choices can make a big difference to teenage brains. They found teenagers are more sensitive (敏感的) than any other age group to foods with a lot of fat and sugar, as their brains are not yet fully formed.
Teenage brains are still developing the ability to notice risks and control actions. The prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) is the part of the brain tells us we shouldn’t eat chips all the time and helps us control ourselves. However, this part doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s. At the same time, teen brains get more excited from prizes. The parts of the brain that make us feel good when we do something happy—like eating tasty foods—are fully developed by the teen years.
As a result, the teen brain has two hits against it when it comes to refusing junk food. Reichelt and her team did an experiment using mice, whose brains develop much like our own. They discovered that “teenage” mice that had high-fat foods performed worse on memory tests than those eating normal foods.
So, what’s the best way to say no to junk food? The answer is exercise. When we exercise, the brain becomes less sensitive to food, besides this, it also helps our brains grow and become better able to make wise decisions.

You are walking down the street. Suddenly it starts to rain and you don’t have an umbrella. What do you do? Run or walk?
Most people would choose to run because it will get you out of the rain faster. But if you run, you will also run into more raindrops. So what should you do?
Things are more complicated(复杂的) than you might think. Franco Bocci, a professor, found that whether you should travel slowly or quickly in rain depends on the wind’s direction and your body’s shape.
When there is no wind, and the rain falls directly on you, Bocci suggests you should run and hide as fast as possible.
But if the wind comes from behind and blows the rain on to your back, the best thing to do is to walk at the same speed as the wind. This way, both your front and back will stay mostly dry.
That is not all. When the wind blows in from the side, you’ll have to think about one more thing-your body shape. Thinner people are hit by fewer raindrops. In this case, a fatter person had better run while a thinner person should still try to match their speed to the wind. “In general, the best thing is to run, as fast as you can-not always, but in general,” Bocci told BBC News. “If you’re really thin, probably there will be an optimal speed. Otherwise, it is better to run fast.”
In fact, the question of how to hide away from the rain has puzzled scientists for many years. Back in 1987, they thought running or walking didn’t really make a difference. Years later they realized wind direction might be a factor(因素). And here, more complicated study results have been found by Bocci.
Now you know what to do next time the rain catches you in the street. But the best way to stay dry is still to carry an umbrella.

8 . There’s nothing better than a walk in the countryside for lifting our spirits. Connecting with nature can help our mental health. For many people, it feels great to take a walk through a forest, but as we admire the trees around us, it’s worth knowing these trees are doing more than just being nice things to look at.
We have already noticed that trees play an important role in taking care of our world—they produce oxygen and clean the air we breathe by taking in about a quarter of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放).
But there’s more to these trees than we might think. Researchers have discovered that they are actually very smart.
It’s thought that trees use a fungal network(真菌网络)to talk and share resources right under our feet. Under the ground are tree roots, bacteria(细菌)and super fine threads of fungi(菌丝). And research has shown that they are all mixed together. They can help each other by sharing “food”, and they can even tell them some coming dangers. Scientists say it’s like the trees are talking to one another.
Ecologist(生态学家)Suzanne Simard has called this network the Wood Wide Web. She discovered that parent trees use this network to help their children. She also found that trees are smart enough to change their behaviour to live in a changing environment.
So it seems trees really are the stars of our natural world, and with around three trillion of them on our planet, it’s time to show them some respect if we want them to grow better.

9 . Do you often have dreams? What do your dreams look like? There was an artist who made art about his dreams. His name is Salvador Dali.
On May 11, 1904, Salvador Dali was born in a small town in Spain(西班牙). His family’s house was near the sea. Little Dali loved playing on the beach. From the sea and rocks there, he got great inspiration. That gave him new and creative(有创意的) ideas.
At school, Dali was not a good student. He often looked out of the window, lost in daydreams. Dali liked to draw pictures of his family. At 13, he went to evening classes for drawing. Dali was a star student there. He started to do better in his studies, too.
After growing up, he had long hair. He liked to wear special clothes. After leaving art school, Dali joined some artists in Paris. They painted strange, dream-like pictures.
In 1941, Dali began to design jewelry(设计珠宝). He designed a flower that could open and close. He also designed brooches(胸针) that looked like eyes and hands. They each looked really special and interesting. In 1948, he came back to Spain and opened a museum to show his paintings and jewelry. When people visit the museum, they feel that they are in a dream. That is what Dali wanted.
