1 . 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项(有两项多余)。

The Secret of happiness

1     Money and success alone do not bring lasting (长久的) happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

2     Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job that we fail to enjoy the present (现在). You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends.     3

Another secret to leading a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies that can help you forget your problems. Many people experience this by dancing or playing a sport, such as skating or playing.     4

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to help others.     5     You can help a friend with his or her lessons, go shopping to buy food for your family members, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

A.The second secret of happiness is to do more exercise.
B.If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone.
C.People who have brothers and sisters are happier than others.
D.The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life.
E.Most people want to be happy, but few knows how to find happiness.
F.People who have several close friends live happier and healthier lives.
G.You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.

文章大意:本文介绍了一种通过植物供能的电灯,能够解决南美洲秘鲁小村庄获取电能的问题。

2 . Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains broke the only power cable (电力电缆) in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps (灯), which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the terrible smell they produce.

Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil (土壤), both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up a LED light bulb (灯泡).

While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals from the soil they produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat the waste and they produce electrons — the parts of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp for later use. The researchers say a single charge (充电) can make a 50w LED light work for two hours enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.

The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

1. What was the biggest problem for the people in Nuevo Saposoa?
A.It often rained heavily in the village.B.The villagers were very short of electricity.
C.The oil lamps produced terrible smell.D.There was only one power cable in the area.
2. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.the boxB.the lampC.the plantD.the energy
3. What do you know about the Plant Lamp?
A.It can be made by local people.
B.It is much easier to use than oil lamps.
C.It can only work for two hours in the evening.
D.The things it needs to make electricity are easy to find.
4. Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To introduce what the Plant Lamp is used for.
B.To express how much effort the UT team made.
C.To show how technology helps with the problem.
D.To explain what problems the people in the rainforest have.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了科研团队研发出了一种可以长时间保存疫苗而无需冷藏的薄片,并描述了它的功能和潜在价值。

3 . Vaccines (疫苗) may soon make their first film appearance. Led by expert Maria A. Croyle, researchers have developed a thin sheet that preserves vaccines for long periods without using the cooling system. This means the carefully cooled small bottles now used to ship vaccines could potentially be replaced by lightweight films that can be mailed in an envelope and stored on a shelf.

Croyle’s laboratory began developing the technology in 2007. Inspired by amber’s ability to preserve the DNA of insects, the researchers set out to create their own version of the substance by mixing “a lot of sugar and a little bit of salt, much like hard candy,” Croyle explains. The vaccine-containing film is administered by mouth—sweet news for many who dislike needles.

The film is tailored to suit each specific vaccine candidate and provide a protective coating. “We’ve learned over time that the key to really stabilizing whatever the film holds is to have it intermixed with all the components,” Croyle says, adding that the process is quick and uses affordable, standard equipment. “We really wanted to come up with something that would be transported to developing countries.”

Immunization (免疫) programs depend heavily on keeping vaccines cold (2℃—8℃) as they are transported, sometimes over thousands of kilometers to far-away locations. Delivery can be difficult and costly, and transport delaying can cause the vaccines to be ineffective.

But this new product can store live viruses, bacteria and antibodies for several months at 20℃. In a paper published in Science Advances, the scientists show that the live viruses in one vaccine were preserved in the film even after 36 months. They also find that a flu vaccine suspended in their film compares favourably with a traditional flu shot. “The study demonstrates early proof of concept for an exciting platform for vaccine product development,” says Lisa Rohan, who was not involved in the study. She also notes that each vaccine type would need a custom formulation (配方) for future stages of development.

“Finding partners to mass-produce for clinical trials is the researchers’ most pressing problem,” Croyle says. They are also exploring packaging methods to keep their films stable up to 40℃.

Size is a major advantage—a letter-sized sheet of the film can carry more than 500 doses (剂) of vaccine, about 1/900 the weight of the same amount of traditional doses. “By making it easier and cheaper to ship and preserve vaccines efficiently,” Croyle says, “the technology could vastly improve immunization rates the world over, particularly in middle-to-low income countries.”

1. What can we learn about the film?
A.It contains animal’s DNA.B.It will replace vaccines.
C.It comes in different flavours.D.It can hold bio-products.
2. According to Paragraph 3, we can learn about the film’s _____________.
A.development scheduleB.possible advantages
C.key componentD.transportation requirements
3. The author mentions Lisa Rohan’s words to _____________.
A.advise personalizing vaccinesB.stress the functions of a new platform
C.suggest the product is promisingD.prove the study is supported widely
4. What will be the next urgent task for Croyle’s team?
A.Reducing the shipping cost.B.Seeking ideal producers.
C.Improving the film’s capacity.D.Advertising the film worldwide.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了保守秘密很难的原因。

4 . We often describe someone who cannot keep a secret as having a “big mouth”. It turns out that this might not be their fault.

According to Asim Shah, professor at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret is difficult. This is because people often have an “obsessive and anxious urge to share it with someone”.

An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted(受委托)with secrets can suffer from depression(压抑)and anxiety according to the Daily Mail.

But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt(负罪感) over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone,” said Shah.

He added that some people easily let secrets slip out. But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.

Shah said that in order to judge whether or not to tell someone a secret, you’d better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you shouldn’t give the information away. Shah also said that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret, you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn’t so secret anymore.

1. What does underlined word “obsessive” mean?
A.Unwilling.
B.Confusing.
C.Wanting to do something very much.
D.Refusing to accept facts.
2. What did researchers at the University of Notre Dame discover about secret-keeping?
A.It can result in mental and physical problems.
B.It can help promote friendships between people.
C.It can harm relationships between friends.
D.It can result in a sense of distrust between friends.
3. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A.Talkative people are unlikely to keep secrets.
B.Quiet people don’t want to know others secrets.
C.Quiet people suffer less stress from keeping secrets.
D.Quiet people may also want to tell your secrets to others.
4. What is Shah’s suggestion if you accidentally tell someone’s secret?
A.You don’t need to keep it a secret anymore.
B.Tell your own secret as an exchange.
C.Tell the person honestly about the fact.
D.Ask the third person to keep it a secret.

6 . An international team of scientists says it has discovered two new “super-Earth” type planets about 100 light-years away, one of which may be suitable for life.

Unlike any of the planets in our solar system, the nearly 1,600 known super-Earths are larger than Earth, but lighter than icy planets like Uranus and Neptune.

Researchers at Belgium’s University of Liège said that they found another one while using Earth-based telescopes to check the existence(存在) of a different planet first discovered by a NASA satellite in the same solar system.

NASA’s satellite found planet LP 890-9b, which is about 30% larger than Earth and orbits its sun in just 2.7 days. ULiège researchers used their telescopes in Spain to take a closer look at the planet. That’s when the stargazers(天文学家) discovered another planet, LP 890-9c, which is 40% larger than Earth and takes 8.5 days to orbit its sun.

Francisco Pozuelos, a researcher, said that the planet could be suitable to life though being a 3.7 million miles from its sun. Earth, by comparison, is located over 93 million miles away from our sun. “Although this planet orbits very close to its star, at a distance about 10 times shorter than that of Mercury around our Sun, the amount of stellar irradiation(照射) it receives is still low, and could allow the presence of liquid water on the planet’s surface, if it has enough air,” Pozuelos said. “This is because the star LP 890-9 is about 6.5 times smaller than the Sun and has a surface temperature half that of our star.”

1. How did ULiège researchers discover LP 890-9c?
A.They discovered it by accident.B.They discovered it with NASA’s help.
C.They discovered it with Pozuelos’ advice.D.They discovered it with telescopes in Belguim.
2. What do we know about super-Earths?
A.They are all suitable for life.B.They are much bigger than Earth.
C.They are heavier than Neptune.D.They are 100 light-years away from Earth.
3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How the planet was discovered.B.Why the planet may be the suitable to life.
C.Pozuelos’ role in the discovery of the planet.D.Comparison’s role between LP 890-9 and earth.

8 . Many of us learn how to ride a bicycle at a young age. As we grow older, we may stop riding—most of us go to school by bus or by subway. But whenever we get on a bicycle, it’s like we’ve never stopped biking. This is strange. In many other cases, our memories let us down. We often find it hard to remember the name of a person or a place, don’t we? So why can we still ride a bicycle after we stopped riding a long time ago?

It turns out that there are many types of memories. They are stored in different regions of our brains. Memories of experiences (e.g., our first day at school) and of factual (事实的) knowledge (e.g, the capital of France) are declarative memories. These memories can be communicated to others. Skills such as playing an instrument or riding a bike are procedural memories. These memories are responsible for our performance.

Scientists have done many experiments on different memory types. Perhaps the most famous of them was carried out on Henry Gustav Molaison, an epileptic(癫痫患者). In an operation in the 1950s, part of his brain was taken away. After that, the man suffered less from epilepsy. But there was a new problem! Molaison’s memory system went wrong. Through various tests, scientists found he could learn new skills (slowly, though). However, he could never remember having been trained to learn a new skill. In other words, Molaison could develop new procedural, but not declarative, memories.

Scientists have concluded that even with serious brain injuries, procedural memories last much longer. However, they haven’t yet found out why. Some say procedural memories are more lasting because they are stored in the brain’s center.

Now, “It is just like riding a bicycle” has been used as an idiom(习语) in our daily life.

1. In the first paragraph, the writer leads into the topic by ________.
A.listing numbersB.giving examples
C.describing scenesD.explaining reasons
2. Which of the following is about a procedural memory?
A.The climate of Asia.B.A birthday party with friends.
C.A trip to the USA.D.Swimming.
3. What might be Henry Gustav Molaison’s new problem after the operation in the 1950s?
A.He couldn’t remember anything.B.He couldn’t learn a new skill.

4. The idiom “It is just like riding a bicycle” probably means “________.”
A.Once learned, it is never forgottenB.It’s never too late to learn

The science fiction movie The Wandering Earth Ⅱ has been quite popular since its release on Jan 22. The space elevators in the movie are quite impressive—elevator cars travel quickly between the cables hat connect Earth’s surface and the space station. This device may not only be imagined in the future.

Early in 1895, Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. He pointed out that if humans could build a tower high enough to reach space, people would be able to travel by space elevators. However, such a tower is impossible because no matter how large its base is, it would not be able to support the whole system.

Scientists then considered the idea in a different way. Earth’s satellites, about 36, 000 kilometers high in the sky, appear to be fixed in space. They rotate around Earth once every day. According to Scientific American, if such a satellite could drop cables towards Earth, and the cables could be fixed to Earth’ surface, then the whole system would rotate along with Earth.

This seems possible, but one of the challenges that stop engineers from building the elevators is the cables’ material. According to an article by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a carbon nanotube might be the most proper material. It weighs 1. 6 grams and it can hold more than 800 tons which is about the weight of 160 elephants. Since its discovery in 1991, scientists have been trying to create a carbon nanotube as long as possible. However, the longest carbon nanotube with a perfect structure was only about half a meter. It was developed by a team at Tsinghua University in 2013.

Space elevators require far less energy and money than rockets. With space elevators, space tasks would be carried out more easily and more frequently. Although scientists have not solved the key problem, they will continue doing research on carbon nanotubes. Maybe one day the space elevator will enter our life.

1. The author mentioned The Wandering Earth Ⅱ in Paragraph 1 to ________.
A.show the popularity of the movie
B.give personal opinions on the movie
C.explain the advantages of the movie
D.lead in the topic based on the movie
2. The underlined phrase “ the idea ” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.setting up a large base for a space tower
B.connecting satellites with Earth by cables
C.building a device for people to reach space
D.creating a system rotating along with Earth
3. The key problem of space elevators at present is ________.
A.how to create carbon nanotubes faster
B.how to make carbon nanotubes lighter
C.how to develop longer carbon nanotubes
D.how to discover more carbon nanotubes

文章大意:本文主要介绍了非语言交流的重要性并告诉我们该如何进行非语言交流。

10 . Can you read the air?

The words we say are important. They tell a listener about our thoughts and emotions. But words may not be the most important way to communicate meaning. According to one study, only seven percent of the meaning comes from words. Instead, meaning comes mostly from non-verbal communication (非言语交流), because non-verbal communication includes your tone of voice and your body language and it can cause misunderstandings when you are talking to someone from a different culture.

In Japan, for example, non-verbal communication is very important. Business speaker Erin Meyer once gave a presentation to a group of people in Japan, and at the end, she asked if anyone had any questions. No one raised their hand, so she sat down. A Japanese colleague (同事) told her that he thought some people did have questions. She was surprised. So he asked the group if they had any questions, and again, no one raised their hands. But then the colleague looked closely and asked a woman if she had a question. She did. Afterwards, Meyer asked her colleague how he knew that the woman had a question. He explained that in Japan, people who are looking at you directly often have questions.

Meyer’s experience shows it is necessary to “read the air”. Then how can people read the air? Here are some ways. Pay attention to non-verbal cues. They often reveal more about a person’s mood or attitude than their words do. Observe (观察) the social context and cultural norms of the situation. Different cultures have different levels of directness in communication, so it’s important to know how people in that culture usually express themselves. Listen carefully to the tone and style of language used. It may indicate a more serious and respectful context or request.

In fact, reading the air is a social skill that people in certain cultures or situations use to understand the unspoken emotions, thoughts, or intentions behind what someone says or does.

1. According to the passage, what does “read the air” mean?
A.Verbal communication.B.Non-verbal communication.
C.Knowing different cultures.D.Methods to express oneself.
2. How does the writer tell the importance of reading the air in Para. 2?
A.By giving an example.B.By showing numbers.
C.By asking questions.D.By making comparison.
3. How many ways of “read the air” are mentioned in Para. 3?
A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.
4. Why do people learn to “read the air”?
A.To learn more different culture.
B.To understand unspoken emotions.
C.To develop a social skill.
D.To guess the unspoken intentions.
