1 . Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I listened to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!
I had assured my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately, however, when that race came, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running with me, although I took part in that race, I didn’t do quite well in it.
While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury (受伤), he never forgot the promise I made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he recovered in the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What I needed was motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he liked very much, saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it and listened to it while exercising every day.
What happened to my thinking was amazing as I listened to it daily. I started to think about the repeated words on the CD — “I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking, “I enjoy exercise.”
I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a person who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives will improve if we reflect on the uplifting words of the famous works. I have found the positive messages have greatly inspired me and then changed my life.
How did I do in that race, you might be thinking? I actually became the champion in my age group.

2 . Peru is famously known as the “land of the Incas”. Á trip to Peru has been on my wish list for quite a while. It was finally time for me to visit the country.
My first day started in Lima, the capital of Peru. I met with the G Adventures representative(代表) here about the tour. G Adventures is an organization that helps you to connect with other like-minded people in small group-based travel activities. They played a big part in helping to make Peru an unforgettable experience for me! In Lima, my representative discussed the plan of my tour, and I also had the chance to explore Lima in my own time, with many activities, including a city tour, show, biking tour, and more.
Day two had me taking a flight from Lima to Cusco. Many people visit Cusco for shopping but for me the main reason for spending a day or two in Cusco was to acclimatize(适应)to the altitude(海拔). As I’d decided to reach the wonder of Machu Picchu, acclimatizing had become important to avoid altitude sickness. I was happy to spend a day exploring Cusco. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it’s famous for its artists, paintings, clothing and traditional instruments. There’s something for everyone in this city.
The day finally came! Day three had me enjoying a lovely guided visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. I had free time to explore these ruins(遗迹) on my own as well as with my guide. It was a lot to take in! I had to stop for a moment and felt the energy(能量) of such an ancient city. The history here was unbelievable and I will never forget my time here for as long as I live!

3 . People do physical exercise as part of their healthy lifestyle to get stronger and healthier.
There are three basic modes of physical exercise: flexibility exercise helps the human body in general or its part in particular to be able to reach farther and bend better; aerobic exercise helps the body work hard for a long time; anaerobic exercise makes the arms and legs stronger.
It has long been known that exercise is not only good for your body, but also for your mind. According to researchers, gymnasts are more likely to be emotionally stable, football players the most outgoing and swimmers the happiest.
The psychological study, which was carried out by experts, also revealed that sports can also offer clues to a person’s attitude to charity, reading habits and even their voting intentions. Boxers, for example, are most likely to focus on material possessions in life. Meanwhile, runners tend to be outgoing people who love being the centre of attention. Walkers, a group that includes those who enjoy wandering and cross-country races, are least concerned about other people and like doing things by themselves without interruption from others. Those who play chess are confident when they face challenges and trouble. Those who swim tend to be tidy and charitable. However, according to Mind Lab, 61 percent of adults are fond of helping others regardless of their choice of sports.
The results from this study also show that no matter what kind of person you are, there is the right kind of exercise for you.

7 . As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new Mary Jane shoes - I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School.
I stood at Mrs. Blackstone’s door. The door suddenly opened to the sing-song voice of Mrs. Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher. “We’ve been waiting for you!” she said in an unusually high voice.
Over the next few days, Mrs. Blackstone found me a new best friend and helped me join a choir (合唱团). During history lessons, as I didn’t want to speak in front of the class, she would have me stand up to address my classmates. She made me smile and feel much relaxed in the new environment.
One spring afternoon, Mrs. Blackstone asked me to stay after class. “I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone’s feelings?
“Are you enjoying your new school?” She said.
“I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” “Okay.” My throat all of a sudden felt very dry.
With her eyebrows (眉毛) raised, she said, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show - I think you have great potential (潜力) to be someone very important.”
I listened carefully to every word. “I’ve been a teacher for over 25 years. I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far.”
Her voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me!

10 . Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
1. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?A.Your weight changes little during a day. |
