文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章为初学者介绍了学习滑板的诀窍。

1 . Skateboarding is fantastic. Before you can do amazing tricks (技巧) in the air, though, you need to learn the basics of skateboarding.     1    .

● Know basic movements.

The first movement is to find your stance (站立姿势). Most skateboarders put their left foot towards the front of the board and use their right foot to push themselves.     2    , if you’re left-handed. Make sure your foot isn’t all the way at the front of the board, or it will tip (倾倒) forward.

● Push off the ground

3    . First, put most of your weight over your front foot so that you can balance as your back foot pushes. Then, balance on the board as it’s moving. It takes time, so make sure you’re comfortable balancing before you move on! Next, once you get used to balancing with your weight over your front foot, you can practice shifting your weight to another while you’re on the moving skateboard.

    4

You use your back foot to stop, just like you use it to push. Let the bottom of your back foot drag along the ground to slowly bring you to a stop. Move slowly to judge how much force you need to put on your back foot to brake.

● Get off the board

Once the board slows down, change your weight to your back foot. With the weight, your back foot will soon take hold of the ground. When it completely stops,     5    . Ta-da! You have taken your first ride on a skateboard!

A.Do it once more
B.Brake your board
C.Do it the other way around
D.Here you need to take baby steps
E.take your front foot off the board
F.pick up your board with both hands
G.The know-how below will help you start

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要报道的是一名中国学生参加国际演讲比赛的相关经历。

3 . You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression — this was the theme of this year’s International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC), held in London from May 11 to 12. Thirty-three young speakers aged 16 to 20 from around the world gathered at The English Speaking Union to tell their stories, including Wu Dongxu, 19, a student from China. To him, the event wasn’t just about giving a speech on first impressions. It also made a strong impression on him.

“Rather than a competition, the experience was more like an inspiring research trip to me, a trip that allowed me to see firsthand the differences and similarities between Chinese and foreign cultures,” said Wu.

Apart from the obvious differences in food, transportation and climate, what impressed Wu most was the different styles of Chinese and foreign public speaking.

Although still a teen, Wu is no stranger to the public speaking podium (讲台). He has participated in many speaking competitions since 2017. But on the stage of the IPSC, speakers had no podium to stand behind. They just had to face the audience.

“This was the first time that I gave a speech without a podium, which made me realize how important eye contact and body language are,” said Wu. “It also gave me more freedom to convey more information with my body language instead of just with words.”

Another difference that caught Wu’s attention was the evaluation criteria (评价标准). According to him, in every speaking competition he had participated in in China, things like pronunciation, fluency and quality of language are always important. But to his surprise, in the IPSC accents and grammatical mistakes are not considered in the evaluation process. It is the story itself that matters most.

“Audiences are eager to hear powerful stories, no matter where they are from. That’s because the emotions expressed in them are shared by all human beings although there are the cultural differences.” said Wu. “Diversity, respect, tolerance and understanding — these are what the IPSC really wants to stress and spread.”

1. What is the topic of this year’s IPSC?
A.Cultural difference.B.First impression.
C.Body language.D.English education.
2. What left Wu Dongxu the deepest impression?
A.The food culture.B.The transportation means.
C.The climate.D.The public speaking style.
3. What can we learn about the IPSC?
A.Speakers are allowed to use podiums.
B.Body language plays an important part.
C.Pronunciation and fluency matter a lot.
D.Language quality is considered the most important.
4. What is Wu Dongxu’s attitude towards the IPSC?
A.Positive.B.Doubtful.C.Objective.D.Opposed.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了现年71岁的凯瑟琳·维吉尼亚·斯威策一生中已经跑了40场马拉松,而且她短期内不打算停下来的故事。

9 . At 71 years old, Kathrine Virginia Switzer has run 40 marathons (马拉松赛跑) in her life — and she has no intention of stopping anytime soon.

Switzer first came to the public eye in 1967, when she was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. Back then, she had to use her initials (姓名的首字母), K.V., instead of her first name to sign up because women weren’t allowed to enter. When people realized what Switzer had done, a race manager tried physically pushing her off during the run. But she managed to keep on, finishing in four hours and twenty minutes.

In 2017, Switzer entered again at age 70. She finished in 4:44:31. Two years before the race, Switzer had her plan. She wanted to work out a training plan. “It was important for me not to get injured during that two-year period or get ill,” she says.

In her 20s, Switzer would work out twice a day, and run a marathon distance once a week. She says looking back, that was probably too intense (强烈的), and she cut back for her 2017 Boston run. She ran every other day, doing strength or core training on the opposite days. This gave her body the chance to recover (恢复) between workouts.

The Boston Marathon wasn’t the only thing on Switzer’s bucket list. She also won the New York City Marathon in 1974. Back then the whole race was in Central Park, though, and she’d love to take on the new route.

The marathoner says people talk about seniors the way they talked about women 50 years ago, thinking they’re too weak to be athletes. “Seniors have been changing ideas about what abilities and limits are really about,” she says. “They are full of optimism (乐观). These people are looking forward to getting older. ”

To anyone who think they’re too old to get fit, Switzer says just working up the courage to take that first walk or jump in the pool is the hardest part. If you’re nervous, ask a friend to come along so you can move on together and feel less worried, she says.

1. What happened to Switzer in the 1967 Boston Marathon?
A.She was pushed over and got badly injured.
B.She signed up for the race using her first name.
C.She became known for taking first place in the run.
D.She continued with the race after being asked to stop.
2. What was Switzer’s training plan for her 2017 Boston run?
A.Doing exercise every other day.
B.Working out at the proper intensity.
C.Running a marathon distance once a week.
D.Doing two months’ hard training before the race.
3. What does Switzer say about seniors?
A.They are open to new ideas.
B.They are a bit afraid of getting older.
C.They are hopeful and still able to do sports.
D.They soon become weak and should place their health first.
4. What is Switzer’s suggestion for someone nervous about their first workout?
A.Doing it with a friend.B.Avoiding hard exercise.
C.Asking a coach for help.D.Caring little about looks.
