1 . 从括号内选择合适的内容完成下面短文

My first and last time running a full marathon

It       1     (was, is) one of the hottest days in the fall of 2019, almost as hot as a typical summer day. I     2     (had stood, was standing) among large crowds of runners, many of whom including me       3     (had been waiting, have been waiting) for this moment. This was my first time to be running in a full marathon. Before this day, I       4     (had never run, have never run) more than 35 km at one time. With the start time approaching, my heart     5     (was to start, started) pounding faster with excitement and uncertainty.       6     (Would I be, Will I be) able to finish a race that is 42.195 kilometers long?

The moment the starting gun went off, the empty road       7     (was flooding, was flooded) with runners. I started my GPS watch to record my running statistics (数 据 ): speed, length, time, heart rate, and the like. As expected, after running for nearly two hours, I     8     (had covered, would cover) half of the race’s length. Given my record in training, I was still confident of finishing the race within four hours. After all, I       9     (had been training, have trained) for the marathon since the spring of the previous year.

The sun     10     (was getting, would get) higher, and I could feel the heat of the sun’s rays. Soon I realized that my pace       11     (had been slowing, would slow) down steadily, as some runners who       12     (had been running, ran) shoulder to shoulder with me were moving ahead. There was nothing I could do but watch the distance between us getting longer. By this time, my heart was pounding faster due to a lack of oxygen. As I       13     (would struggle, was struggling) to pass the 32 km sign, more runners ran past me. It was also at this stage that I got cramp (痉挛) in my leg and had to stop running. So, I walked instead, silently drying my tears of regret. Determined to cross the finish line before the marathon       14     (was, would be) officially over, I turned down any offer of help from volunteers. By the time I finished the race, 5.5 hours       15     (had passed, was passing).

In future, I will probably not have a second chance to run a full marathon, for I had lung surgery the following year and       16     (have since been forbidden, had since been forbidden) to do any vigorous (激烈的) exercise.

I eventually managed to persuade my parents to buy me a new football shirt for school matches. I was so excited. So I decided to wear it today for the first time during a match. As soon as we had been playing for ten minutes, a shirt sleeve was torn (撕破) when I made a quick turn.

I couldn’t tell my parents that my new football shirt was ruined. I needed a tailor. As I walked home, I suddenly came across a shop sign: “All kinds of repairs!”

I went inside directly. I looked around the shop and I saw broken toys.

“I guess this is the wrong place. What I really need is a tailor,” I said, putting my fingers through the tear in the shirt.

“This tear needs repairing,” I said.

“Don’t worry. This is just the right place, son. Since I opened this shop, I have repaired many things, but never a football shirt,” a man with white hair said.

“Is this the first time you’re going to repair a football shirt? I hope you aren’t going to make it worse. It’s new.”

“It’s OK. I’ve been waiting a long time to repair a football shirt.”

Then the man took the shirt from me, pulling it out of my hand.

“Are you a striker?” he asked.

Before I could reply, “Yes, how did you know?” he said, “We may see you play for a professional team one day.”

“Impossible! My dad doesn’t see football as a profession. He thinks I should be an engineer or a doctor.”

“Not at all...   People who choose a career they really desire become successful and happy.”

“Yes, you’re right! I know what I want to be! I’m not shy when I play football. I want to play just like Ridvan does! Even my father likes him!”

The man was repairing the tear with thread.

“Great! The tear hardly shows now.”

He smiled at me. I noticed a photo on the wall. It was a photo of a football team. I couldn’t make out which team it was from where I was sitting.

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.

On Saturday morning, Darla’s mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty’s mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla’s house, then they walked to the court.

Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.

Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn’t need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn’t want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.

After watching my son Todd run in a race, I made my usual comment, “Todd, I can walk faster than those women run.” Todd laughed as he knew I wasn’t a runner. “Mom, how about you running with me next year in this race?” Without thinking, I quickly accepted this challenge. I felt this was going to be a piece of cake!

When it was almost time for the race to occur the next year, Todd had been in hospital for a long time because of a car accident. Todd and my friends started to encourage me to run the race. I decided I should keep my promise to Todd and run the race. The first thing I did was go out and buy some running clothes. I might as well look good even though I hadn’t trained at all.

The day of the race came. I wished Todd could be there with me, but I had to start off alone. It wasn’t long before some racers started to run next to me and talk to me. I wouldn’t like to talk because I wanted to focus on my running. However, one guy was very talkative. He kept saying how tired he was, and that I must be tired too. He talked on and on. The race was over and this guy’s wife won! I didn’t mind this result. I was just happy to finish the race and keep my promise to Todd.

Todd asked about the race when I went to the hospital. I told him what had happened and how this guy would not stop his negative talk. Todd laughed and set me straight, “Don’t you know what this guy was doing? He thought you were the competitor by the way you were dressed. He wanted his wife to win.” Only then did I figure out the truth, so I decided to continue taking part in the race the next year; I wanted to win this time.

The following year I did train. I even bought some tapes called “Win at Sports” and listened to them daily. These tapes gave ideas about staying behind and knowing when to make your move.

Paragraph 1:

When it was time for the race, I was all dressed and ready.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Building up your muscles is an easy part—the hard part is burning those layers of fat that cover your muscles. Here are some tips.

In order to work out harder, make a favorite fitness playlist with music that gets you excited, as it can help you go up to 20% longer and burn more calories, according to a study of Brunel University London. The study’s researcher says that music tends to prevent tiredness, and produces feelings of excitement.

Not only does eating good breakfast speed up your metabolism(新陈代谢), but it also nourishes (为……提供营养) your muscles. After eating breakfast, your best way of keeping fat burning going is to “graze”. Set up an eating schedule where you eat five to eight small meals every few hours throughout the day. It provides your body with a constant flow of nourishment to feed your muscles.

Men’s Health suggests choosing hard exercise that involves total body movements in order to help raise your heart rate and leave you out of breath. By including total body movements into your exercise, you’re going to end up burning a lot more calories while challenging yourself at the same time. As the saying goes: No pain, no gain. So, get moving.

Sounds easy enough, right? It’s as simple as drinking a cup of green tea every day. Adding in green tea will push fat burning to another level. And studies have shown that it can increase fat burning and help you lose weight.

While doing your weight training, try something including short, big bursts of cardio(心脏强化锻炼) throughout your exercise. For example, if you’re doing an hour-long exercise, place cardio into it every 15 minutes to help speed up your metabolism.

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.

Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.

Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.

It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him. “My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, “Why not?”

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了盲人自闭症学生保罗在导跑员Rebel的帮助下在多项比赛中取得胜利,保罗很感激他的指引。

9 . A fourth-grade star athlete has made headlines for keeping up with high schoolers. However, it’s not for the honor. The selfless student is a guide runner for a blind autistic (患自闭症的) teen who needs a helping hand on the cross-country track.

Rebel Hays, 11, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, stepped up as a guide runner for a ninth-grader, Paul Scot, when West Fork High School put out a call for volunteers. Paul, their student, wanted to compete.

As they ran together, the pair became good friends. “Paul and Rebel’s story is so much more than running,” said Rebel’s mother, Lou Ann. “Paul doesn’t have many friends, so Rebel doesn’t just guide him a traces. They also spend time together,” she said, telling jokes. “Paul is grateful for his young guide’s direction.” “Rebel directs me whether there’s a ditch (沟)or there are hills, who encourages me to run faster.” Paul said.

In honor of their partnership, West Fork High School wrote a post on Facebook. Posting on Oct.6, 2021, after a 5K race at Chile Pepper where the boys achieved a personal record of 21 minutes, school representatives explained, “Rebel Hays has been helping Paul all season long. He is a promising runner, but more importantly, he has a huge heart! Thank you, Rebel! Thank you a lot!”

According to Mile Split Arkansas, Paul said that his goal this year was to break 21 minutes; however, they missed it at Chile Pepper but achieved it at Yan Buren Pointer Classic, finishing with a time of 20:59:44. With the help and direction from Rebel, Paul finished 59th out of 135 runners in the 3A boys race at the state Meet in Hot Springs in early November.
