文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了手球在不同地区、不同历史时期的发展与演变情况。

1 . Americans grew up with stories of Fionn Mc Cool, Cuchulainn and other legendary heroes who, emerging from the Celtic twilight, would relax after their great deeds in battle and hunting by playing hurling (ariel hockey) and handball. Great was the shock in later years to hear that other countries such as Spain, France and Italy were also claiming credit as the original home of the game.

Strict historical research, rather than myth and legend, turns up few clues as to the origins of the game. The elements involved in the play ball, wall, players and rules must have evolved in many different countries at different times.

The first record of ball games with the hand is from 2000 BC in Egypt. Their priests (祭司) of the temple of Osiris in Thebes were depicted on the tombs, striking the ball with the hand. Such iconographic evidence is also found in America where ball games formed an integral part of Pre-Hispanic culture. Over 700 ball court sites have been identified from Arizona to Nicaragua, with many having sculptures, bas-reliefs and painted vessels that show people engaged in hand-played balls. The oldest are dated as far back as 1500 BC, and interestingly in only one area is there play involving a wall that depicts the land of the Chichimeca people of the Mexican plateau.

Meanwhile, back in Europe, the Greek writer Homer referred to a handball game invented by Anagalla, a princess of Sparta, in his works. Alexander the Great (450 BC) was credited with spreading the game to the Greek colonies in Italy, and from there it went to Spain, France and to other parts of the Roman Empire. Around the year 1000 AD, as Europe stepped deep into the Dark Ages, the mention of handball became more numerous in manuscripts. In France Jeux de Paume(palm play)became popular with both the nobility in their enclosed courts and the ordinary people who played longe-paume on common land. The medieval annual of St. Foix written around 1300AD describes the game, “The exercise consists in receiving the ball and driving it back again with the palm. The game was first played with the bare hand, then with the glove, lined or unlined; afterwards, they bound cord around the hand to make the ball rebound more forcibly.”

So far there is no mention in any of the sources of a rebound game against a wall, the game played was one of hand-tennis and this is still played in parts of Spain, France, Holland and Sweden. The original ball used was made of tightly rolled cloth pieces stitched together and this would have given little bounce against a wall. Meanwhile, the game of Jeux de Paume with the addition of larger and longer gloves — eventually becoming bats — evolved into the game of tennis in the end. The hand versus racquet controversy was commented on by Erasmus, the Dutch Philosopher in 1524, “You may sweat more but the game is prettier when played with the hand.”

Should E-sports Be in the Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee and the Global Association of International Sports Federations recently hosted an e-sports forum to explore shared similarities, possible partnership and the tricky question of whether video gaming could be recognized as an Olympic event. Ever since the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris first expressed its interest in possibly adding electronic sports to the Olympic Games program, we’ve seen a growing interest by the IOC in e-sports—“since the youth are interested, let’s embrace this,” said the organizing committee of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

To tell the truth, as a former-world class high jumper, I struggle with the notion of e-sports becoming an Olympic sport. Conversations I’ve had with other Olympians reveal concerns about comparing the physical skill and demands of traditional athletic competition with e-sports.

Given the growth in popularity, it’s understandable why the IOC would want to partner with e-sports. The IOC generates more than 90 percent of its revenue from broadcast and sponsorship. The marketing firm Newzoo estimated last year that with brand investment growing by 48 per cent, the global e-sports economy will reach almost $1 billion in 2018.

What’s more, most Olympians recognize that those who participate in e-sports spend a great deal of time training—even working with nutritionists and sport psychologists to improve their prowess. But is that enough to join the Olympic Games family?

Is e-sport a sport? To answer this question, perhaps we need to revisit the academic definition of sport. While differences may exist in their granular descriptions of sport, researchers appear to converge on three central attributes: The sport involves a physical component, it is competitive, and it is institutionalized, meaning a governing body establishes the rules of performance.

While e-sports can be argued to be competitive and institutionalized, the first criterion is where it falls short. Given the IOC’s advocacy role for physical activity, e-sports seems to be a conflict with its push for an active society. In an interview with Inside the Games, Sarah Walker, an IOC Athletes’ Commission member, explained her opposition, “If I were inspired to be a gamer, I would go home and sit on the couch as my first step.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章通过一篇新的研究讲述了每天锻炼30分钟“可能不足以”对抗久坐带来的健康问题。

3 . Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to counter the health issues created by long time sitting, according to a sweeping new study.

The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, ignoring light activities, involved 3702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices(指数).

With the data collected, researchers characterized people by how they moved. The first group dutifully exercised for a half-hour and then sat, almost nonstop, for more than 10hours a day. Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee. The third group sat, uninterrupted, for up to 10 hours, but also collected an hour of exercise most days. The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more.

When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. On the contrary, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.

“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the downsides of long time sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead author of the new study.“In addition to a brisk(轻快的) workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.”

1. How is the new study different from the previous ones?
A.It examined sitting and exercise separately.
B.It proved that light activities were ignored.
C.It took light activities into consideration.
D.It suggested working out for a half-hour.
2. What do we know from the data in the new study?
A.The first group spent a half-hour on light activities after long sitting.
B.The second group got similar improved health indices as the movers.
C.The third group collected an hour’s exercise during 10 hours’ sitting.
D.The movers got up every 30 minutes for formal exercise for an hour.
3. What light activity is suggested to go with formal exercise?
A.Reading while sitting.B.Swimming in the pool.
C.Working out in the gym.D.Walking in the gym hall.
4. What can we infer from Vahid’s words?
A.It’s better to exercise more often than half an hour every day.
B.Moving lightly and often is more useful than we have thought.
C.Working out harder and longer is better than just moving lightly.
D.A 30-minute workout has little help for long time sitting problems.

6 . People refer to never forgetting how to ride a bike or throw a baseball as examples of “muscle memory”, the result of a motor learning.     1     It is a phenomenon that previously trained muscles acquire strength after a period of disuse.

Previous research has shown that the changes actually persist in the muscles themselves. In one study of mice, the results suggest that after nuclei in muscle cells multiply in response to an overload of training, those extra nuclei aren’t lost during subsequent periods of inactivity. They are retained (保留), essentially waiting to be reactivated. If you fell off the fitness wagon (马车) during the pandemic, don’t be frustrated. Once you have got additional nuclei, you are banking the capacity.     2     In fact, a recent study revealed that less than eight weeks of retraining were needed to regain your former fitness. It depends on how fit you were initially, how long the layoff was, how old you are and how long you’d been exercising.

3     It means you still have a distinct advantage when it comes to regaining your former level of fitness. And the principle applies to both resistance training and endurance training. The best way to regain your muscle memory is to start at a level below what you were accustomed to doing, and then gradually increase in terms of duration, frequency, then intensity.     4

Ultimately, muscle memory is a payoff for all the past work you put into learning a sport.     5     You will never know how much muscle memory you may have until you start training again.

A.The best way to tap into it is to “get back on the horse”.
B.Physiologists, on the other hand, define it in a different way.
C.This convinces the researchers that muscle memory may not be long lasting.
D.That is to say, we can do the sports automatically without conscious thought.
E.It is generally safe to increase these elements by 5 percent every week or two.
F.It is evident that the more you exercise, the more muscle memory savings you will have.
G.All this news about muscle memory is encouraging for those who fell off the fitness scheme.

7 . The Upside to Being Outside

Research shows that being in nature makes people feel good, whether they’re roughing it in the wilderness for days or just hanging out at a local park for a while. One study was conducted in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. Researchers found that most participants’ mood and well-being improved significantly when they spent time in urban parks, even though the average visit was only around half an hour.

1     For example, scientists in the United Kingdom studied the impact of the “30 Days Wild” campaign. It challenged people to interact with nature for 30 days by enjoying earthy activities like feeding birds and planting flowers. Participants were measurably happier and healthier throughout the challenge…and for months afterwards, too.    2

How does nature boost people’s happiness? Scientists say that spending time in natural settings reduces stress and anxiety, which benefits mental and physical health. Research shows our brains are more relaxed in natural settings.

To most people, it’s not news that nature can be calming. But multiple studies have found that spending time in nature also has some more surprising benefits, like improving creativity and problem-solving.     3     Another found that exposure to nature helped people score better on tests. That’s more proof that going outside is a smart move!

What accounts for the connection with cognition and creativity? It could be that a good dose of nature acts as a cure to information overload. Everyday life involves a lot of multitasking. Some scientists theorize that spending time in nature enables our brains to rest and recover from mental tiredness.     4

Naturally, scientific studies don’t cover everything that’s great about the great outdoors.     5     From recreation and exercise to happiness and creativity, there are lots of upsides to getting outside.

A.One study revealed that people were better at figuring out puzzles after a four-day camping trip.
B.According to many scientific studies, there’s a good chance it’ll make you happier, healthier, and more creative.
C.What’s more, the lift people get from nature is long lasting.
D.Lots of people enjoy fun activities outside, like swimming, riding bikes, or climbing trees.
E.When the only light you’ve seen all day is the glow of a screen, it might be a good idea to switch it off.
F.This means that whether you’re studying or playing video games, heading outside to give your brain a break might help you get to the next level.
G.So, kicking back in a park is a bit like treating your mind to a restful mini vacation.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章分析了足球运动中弯曲球的原理。

9 . The highlights of every World Cup are the impossible goals, especially the arc (弧线) ball goals. It’s breathtaking to watch. Every spin (旋转) of the ball moves air across the surface, pushing it into a bend.

When a soccer ball flies, the air forms a layer around the surface of the ball. As the balls pins, it changes the direction of the air to one side, says John Bush, an applied mathematician at MIT. This air pushes the ball in the opposite direction. The player starts with a strike on the outside of his right foot, which hits the left side of the ball, starting a clockwise spin. It throws the air off to the left, and the force created by the air leaving the ball pushes it to the right, explains Bush. Thus, a ball spinning to the right (that’s clockwise) will also are towards the right. This force is called the Magnus Effect.

It helps the goalkeepers, because they see uniform curvature (曲度) when players are taking bending shots at them. If they can pick up the spin right, it’s going to be the same amount of curvature, and they know where to put their hands. This is partly why players are much more likely to take bending shots during free kicks when goalkeepers can’t see their kicks quite as well because of the wall of defenders. If a ball isn’t spinning, it does something called knuckling, where the air turns the ball to one side in random directions, causing it to bounce in-the air unpredictably. “It’s usually achieved when a player manages a sharp, fast touch of the ball, typically right on the air valve where the ball is most firm.” say a Bush. Its lack of spin kept the goalkeeper from being able to predict where it was going until it was too late. All the goalkeepers tremble before the kicker that can shoot this kind of soccer ball.

B.Because they can take bending shots more easily.
C.Because they can get a cover from their team males.
D.Because they can trick their way past the opposing defenders.
3. Which shot might be the most predictable for goalkeepers?
A.A free-kicks hot.
B.A fast shot without spinning·
C.A shot with a unique curvature.
D.A bending shot without defensive blocking.

The Race

After watching my son Todd run in a race, I made my usual comment (评论), “Todd, I could walk faster than those women run.” Todd laughed as he knew I wasn’t a runner. “Listen, Mom, how about running with me next year at this race?” Without thinking, I agreed to this challenge. I felt it’s a piece of cake!

Never did I imagine what the next year would bring. When it was almost time for this race to occur, Todd died in a car accident. A few of his friends knew this “challenge” I had agreed to with Todd. They started to encourage me to run the race. Honestly speaking, I had almost forgotten what I said.

Thinking deeply, I decided I should keep my promise to Todd. The first thing I did was buy some running clothes. I might look good, even though I hadn’t trained.

The day of the race came. I felt pretty sad, but I started off. It wasn’t long before a man started to run next to me. The man was very talkative. He kept saying how tired he was. The chatter went on and on. The race was over, and this man’s wife won! I was just happy to finish and keep my promise to Todd.

I came home, and my neighbor asked about the race. I told him what had happened. My neighbor laughed, “Kay, don’t you know what this guy was doing? He thought you were the competition by the way you were dressed. He wanted his wife to win. ” “Oh really!?”

The following year I did train. I even bought some tapes called “Win At Sports” and listened to them daily. If this man thought I was the competition, you could bet I was going to be the competition. His attitude in that race built a fire in me! The race was on!
