2 . For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.

For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.

Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”

Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

1. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
2. What does the study show about depression?
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
3. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Harmful.B.Complex.
C.Unusual.D.Common.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To discuss a disease.
B.To introduce a method.
C.To analyze a genetic risk.
D.To explain a phenomenon.

4 . Dragon boating is a team sport that has its roots in ancient China. The boats are decorated with a dragon head and tail. In recent years, cancer survivor groups have got involved in the sport to help make friends and help rebuild their lives.

On a recent Saturday morning, a group of 20 women were on a boat in the Anacostia River in Washington DC. They moved their paddles (船桨) in rhythm with the call of a coach. The women belong to the dragon boat team GoPink!DC, which trains weekly. It also races against other breast cancer survivor teams in the Dragon Boat Festival. As a result, GoPink!DC won medals in this Washington dragon boat festival.

Lydia Collins joined the team five years ago after finding out she had breast cancer. “I was told by my doctor that I developed breast cancer. I was depressed because of my illness — I lost all interest in life and wouldn’t even get out of bed to eat. But now I love the team spirit. I just love everything about it. It is like a floating support group on the water.” The paddles are breast cancer survivors and their supporters.

Annette Rothemel helped set up the group in 2006. She is a researcher of the National Institutes of Health as well as a breast cancer survivor. “It is sort of an easy entry sport because on the same boat people at different levels can be doing the same sport.” But Ms Rothemel says dragon boating can be physically demanding, especially for someone who is sick and getting treatment for cancer.

“It’s hard but I think you have to challenge yourself in life. This is something I look forward to. I get to be out here with my sisters and supporters that understand what I’m suffering and help motivate me. So it makes me stronger and it makes me feel better.” another cancer survivor Rhonda Hartzel said.

Annette Rothemel says the cancer survivors feel a sense of sisterhood and share good times when they paddle together. She says both feelings are treasured by the team.

5 . Sailing is one of the most fun and exciting ways to enjoy the world’s great bodies of water. You can sail wherever you find enough water and a little wind to navigate (导航) a boat.     1     Those with less spare time who are only looking for a fun way to relax can enjoy sailing near the shore on the closest body of water.

Sailboats come in all sizes.     2     Learning to sail will allow you to enjoy the water year-round, since you can still sail when the water becomes too cold to swim or water-ski. The art of sailing will open your eyes to a whole new world of water sports.

3     You control the boat by using a rudder (船舵) and sometimes other more complicated skills. Through the management of the sails, a sailor can control the force of the wind in them, which can change the direction and speed of the boat.

Sailing is a rather complex art.     4     Before you begin, you will need to become familiar with the parts of the sailboat. You must be able to swim well and you need to know first aid, so you are prepared if there is an emergency. Then you need to learn the basics of sailing, such as judging the wind, understanding the conditions of the water, and knowing how to handle the boat.

Sailing is an amazing way to stretch (拓宽) your boundaries. You will find new ways to enjoy water sports from the deck of a boat.     5

A.The sport of sailing has a long and rich history.
B.The truly adventurous can sail around the world.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了奥运会的最后一个比赛项目——马拉松,以及其的开始、变化和有趣的故事等。

6 . The final event in the Olympics is the marathon. It is also usually the most exciting. As the leader comes into the stadium to run the last few meters of the 42-kilometer race, the crowd rises to its feet to shout and cheer. The name of the race comes from a battle(战争) in Ancient Greece. According to the story, a soldier ran from the battle field, Marathon, to Athens, to bring the news of a Greek victory against the Persians. He died just after arriving.

The marathon has been an Olympic event since the modern games started in 1896. At first the distance was 40 kilometers—the distance between Marathon and Athens. In 1908, however, at the London Olympics, it was changed. The King of England wanted the runners to leave from his castle in Windsor and arrive in a new stadium in central London. The distance was 26 miles—about 42 kilometers. In fact, the 1908 marathon ended dramatically(戏剧性地). When the leader, an Italian, entered the stadium he turned the wrong way and fell onto the ground. Officials picked him up and helped him to the finishing line, just as the second runner, an American, entered the stadium. The Americans protested(抗议) and in the end the American runner was declared(宣布) the winner. Since then, there have been many more exciting marathons.

In fact, you don’t have to wait for the Olympic Games to run or watch a marathon, as there are marathons in over sixty countries and hundreds of cities around the world today. One of the most famous marathons is in New York, and is watched by two million people around the streets and across the bridges of the city, and past New York’s famous landmarks. But perhaps one of the most beautiful and unique marathons ever is the Great Wall Marathon, which most competitors find is the toughest course to run.

The marathon is the final Olympic event because it is thought to be the hardest. But experts believe that most people—even people who are not very good at sport—can run a marathon, if they train for it.

1. What did the crowd do when the leader came into the stadium?
A.They stood up quietly.B.They shouted with excitement.
C.They carried him to the line.D.They cried sadly.
2. How is the second paragraph developed?
A.By following time order.B.By listing numbers.
C.By following space order.D.By giving reasons.
3. What do we know about the marathon according to the passage?
A.The name of the race comes from a battle in Greece.
B.The Marathons have the same length all the time.
C.The Great Wall Marathon is the easiest course to run.
D.People not good at sport cannot run a marathon unless trained.
4. Which is the most special marathon mentioned in the passage?
A.The Marathon in London in 1908.
B.The Great Wall Marathon.
C.The Marathon in New York.
D.The Marathon in 1896.

7 . Coach your favourite sports to poor children in schools. Help these children to get a structured sporting education and see their joy as they pick up new skills. If that's not enough sport for you, you can even get involved in playing with local teams in your evenings and weekends.

Description

As a volunteer sports coach, you and your group will head to 3 schools each day to coach your chosen sport or a variety of them. Sports coaching volunteering involves not just teaching the kids, but also acting as a good role model. Children are aged about 10-13 and are often new to playing sport in a structured environment. You don't need to be a top player to take part (though any champions are welcome!) —it's your advanced personality and drive that will make the biggest effects.

Which sports can I coach?

Sports coaching volunteers can choose to specialize in coaching just one sport, but often we find that it is best to combine several sports for more variety. The freedom to choose between different sports makes the weeks even more diverse. Follow the links to find out about each sport.

Accommodation

•The accommodation is located in a leafy suburb 10 minutes' drive from the city centre and sea front.

•Sports volunteers share accommodation with childcare and teaching volunteers.

Food

All dietary requirements can be catered for, as long as we know about them in advance. Coaching children in sport will make you hungry—many volunteers choose to supplement their meals with snacks bought in the local shops, just 10 minutes' walk away. There is a volunteer kitchen where participants can do any cooking they wish outside of mealtimes.

Want to go travelling afterwards?

We can arrange a week-long Garden Route tour after your time on the project. Follow the link to find out more about the Garden Route Tour.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章讲述研究表明,轻体力活动有助于减缓大脑衰老。

8 . Even light activity such as housework might help to keep the brain young, researchers say, adding to a growing body of evidence that, when it comes to exercise, every little helps.

Writing in the journal Jama Network Open, the international team of researchers report how they came to their findings by studying at least three days of activity-tracker data from 2,354 middle-aged adults from the US, together with the participants' brain scans.

From the latter, the researchers worked out individuals' brain volume, a measure linked to ageing: about 0.2% of the volume of the brain is lost every year after the age of 60. Loss or shrinkage (萎缩) of brain tissue is linked to dementia (痴呆), Spartano noted.

After taking into account factors including sex, smoking status and age, the team found that every extra hour of light physical activity per day was linked to 0.22% greater brain volume, equal to just over a year's less brain ageing. What's more, those who took at least 10,000 steps a day had a 0.35% greater brain volume than those who took, on average, fewer than 5,000 steps a day—equivalent to 1.75 years' less brain ageing.

However, the study has limitations. It used mainly white participants, and cannot prove cause and effect. The authors add that not all time spent sedentary is necessarily "bad" for the brain—particularly if people are engaged in a task that takes a lot of thinking.

Dr James Pickett, head of research at Alzheimer's Society, said, "Don't worry if you're not hill-running, but find something you enjoy and do it regularly, because we know that what's good for the heart is good for the head."

1. What can be inferred from the statistics in Paragraphs 3&4?
A.Loss of brain tissue is linked to disease.
B.Light physical activity raises the brain volume.
C.Taking 10000 steps per day is best for our brain.
D.Light physical activity slows down the brain ageing.
2. What does the underlined word “sedentary” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Sitting.B.Walking.C.Sleeping.D.Working.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards the study?
A.Doubtful.B.Supportive.C.Objective.D.Indifferent.
4. Which of the following statement will Dr. Pickett possibly agree with?
A.Regular exercise makes you happy.
B.The more exercise, the better.
C.Doing what you like regularly is beneficial.
D.Light physical activities are the best.

9 . Roller coasters are fast and exciting. But passing a painful kidney (肾) stones is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.

David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, “In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent passage rate. Sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate.”

It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.

When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of differing shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two roller coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns.

Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could also be used as a preventative measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. “You need to heed the warnings before going on a roller coaster,” he said. “If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, patients should try it.”

He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more fun!

C.interestingD.painful
2. Which of the following benefits people with a kidney stone most?
A.Sitting in the first car of a roller coaster.

3. What’s Wartinger’s attitude to riding roller coasters for people having a kidney stone?
A.Worried.B.Negative.
C.Supportive.D.Skeptical.
