Jack Green was the football coach at an American college. He was appointed to find good players, and they weren’t smart enough to be accepted.
One day, the coach has brought an excellent player to the director of the college and suggested the student allowed to enter without an examination. “Well,” the director said after thinking for a while, “I’d better ask you a few questions first.” Then the student was called for and asked some easier questions, but he didn’t know any of the answers. At last the director said, “Well, what is thirty – four minus two?” It was quite a long time when the student answered, “Thirty – three.” The director threw up his hands and looked at the coach disappointed, but the coach said, “Oh, please let him in, sir! He was only wrong by two comparing with all the others.”

3 . Kung fu is one of a number of Chinese martial arts designed to improve the body and the mind. It is perhaps one of the most widely known martial arts, because many films include its techniques. There are hundreds of styles taught all over the world, although they can be loosely divided into two camps: Shaolin style kung fu, and other techniques, some of which have a history that outdates the Shaolin order.

Shaolin kung fix has its origins in the fifth century. Like some other martial arts, it began in religious temples, where the monks sought a mind and body discipline (训练方法). In addition to the fighting style, it also includes mental exercises and religious practices designed to balance the whole body.

Shaolin temples resembled universities, integrating a wide range of subjects of study. Therefore, traditional Shaolin styles such as Wing Chun, Crane, Praying Mantis, and Hung Gar took knowledge from fields outside martial arts, such as the healing arts and meditation. Supporters for Shaolin styles believe that they are more rounded martial arts styles, and that learners will benefit from them on a whole body level.

Other fighting styles, some of which predate the Shaolin style, are also lumped under the kung fu umbrella. They include Pa-Kua, Eagle Claw, and Eight Drunken Immortals styles. These disciplines are not considered to be Shaolin style because they did not originate in temples and are focused primarily on fighting techniques.

Whether Shaolin or otherwise, kung fu is characterized by self defense strategies that turn the energy of an attacker against him or her. Although the techniques may vary, most styles teach throws, kicks, punches, and the use of weapons. In addition to the physical discipline, most place a great importance on respect, honor, and living a balanced life.

4 . For generations, students were taught to stretch before playing games. Then the practice fell out of favor. Studies seemed to show that such stretching temporarily reduces muscular power, weakens athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. So most fitness experts currently advise against stretches before exercise. But now a new research indicates that they might not be such a bad idea after all.

This month, the journal, Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM), published a study by four distinguished exercise scientists who analyzed more than 200 studies of how stretching affects the following exercise. In broad terms, they found that stretching can briefly prevent the ability to generate power. So if you reach for your toes and hold that position, tightening your hamstrings (腿筋), you might not then be able to leap as high or start a dash as forcefully as you don’t stretch.

Those undesirable effects were generally found, however, only if each stretch was held for more than 60 seconds and the subject then immediately became fully active, with no further warm-up. “Outside the lab, most people are unlikely to hold a warm-up stretch for longer than about 30 seconds.” Dr. McHugh, the co-author of the study says. The review found few lasting negative impacts from these short stretches, especially if the volunteers followed that stretching with several minutes of jogging or other basic warm-up movements. In fact, these short stretches turned out to have a positive effect.

Do these findings mean that all the athletes should stretch in advance before a match? “Not necessarily,” Dr. McHugh says, “Runners and cyclists don’t have much risk for acute muscle injuries.” Stretching before these activities is unlikely to protect against injury. Runners and cyclists can adequately warm up by jogging or pedaling lightly. But he suggests that people who play basketball and other ball sports should stretch in advance. Those who haven’t stretched since childhood gym class might want to consider consulting an athletic trainer about the best upper and lower body stretches, particularly for the shoulders and hamstrings.

1. Which of the following statements agrees with most fitness experts?
A.Before playing a game you should stretch your legs and arms.
B.After attending a match you should stretch your legs and arms.
C.It’s harmful to stretch your legs and arms before playing games.
D.It doesn’t matter whether you stretch or not before playing games.
2. According to the new research, people may suffer negative impacts when _______.
A.they do stretches after attending a game
B.they reach for toes and hold that position
C.following a stretch with several minutes’ jogging
D.dashing immediately after one 60-second plus stretch
3. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A.all athletes should not stretch in advance
B.the four scientists published the journal APNM
C.it’s unnecessary for a tennis player to do warm-up stretches
D.players ought to have done warm-up stretches since childhood
4. What’s Dr. McHugh’s attitude toward stretches?
A.Concerned.B.Doubtful.
C.Disapproving.D.Objective.

6 . While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of courage.

The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.

I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong. I’m not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold — his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor.

I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was worn out.

But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed.

No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout “Come on, you can do it!” and he did.

A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he was recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors.

Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to Sydney.

In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated out of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it is nice to watch an underdog.

1. From the passage we can learn that the young man ________
A.made his turn to start back pitifully.
B.was skillful in freestyle in the game.
C.swam faster than the average swimmer.
D.was not capable enough to win the medal.
2. The crowd changed their attitudes because ________
A.they felt sorry for the young man.
B.they were moved by the young man.
C.they wanted to show their sympathy.
D.they meant to please the young man.
3. According to the passage, “it is nice to watch an underdog” probably means _______.
A.it’s amusing to watch a man with awful swimming skills
B.it’s amazing to watch an ordinary man challenging himself
C.it’s cheerful for athletes to act proudly before their competitors
D.it’s brave enough for some athletes to remove the silver medals
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Compete for Gold!
B.Try again!
C.Break a Record!
D.Go for it!
