文章大意:本文是说明文。主要解释了为什么拉伸很重要,以及如何在日常生活中实施拉伸,通过事实和专家意见来说明拉伸的好处和必要性。

1 . After a challenging workout, the last thing you probably want to do is spend five to ten minutes stretching.     1     Why is stretching so important and how often do you need to do it? Here we are going to share what we have learnt from some experts.

When you think about exercise, most people participate in some type of aerobic (有氧的) activity that improves their cardiovascular (心血管的) endurance.     2     Those are two very important elements of a fitness program, but there’s also a third element. That is your flexibility and mobility, which is most often the one that’s ignored.

Stretching helps keep us mobile. We are born super mobile as babies and young children, but lose this as we grow into adults.     3     It means we are able to move less; we are functionally less able to do everyday stuff like picking up a pen from the floor, or climbing stairs efficiently.

4     It’s also going to help reduce the risk of injury. Some people are naturally more flexible than others, but no matter whether you can touch your toes or not, you should be working on your flexibility and mobility because the more moveless you are, the more your muscles are shortening, which in turn is causing you to be tighter.

When you get up, you maybe go for a quick walk to fill up your water bottle or get a cup of coffee, then come back and do a seated leg stretch or a standing version.     5

A.Why is stretching good for your healthy habits?
B.Stretching makes for relieving muscle tension and pain.
C.When we stop stretching, we lose capacity in movement.
D.Walking, done in the right way, is a form of aerobic exercise.
E.It won’t take much time to add these habits into your daily routine.
F.However, doing so can result in physical and mental health benefits.
G.They also do weight training to help maintain muscle mass and build strength.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文,文章主要介绍了美国国家公共广播电台举行的Tiny Desk Contest的相关信息。

3 . National Public Radio (NPR) Music’s Tiny Desk Contest is back. Artists can submit an entry from this morning. This isn’t just another regular year of the Contest — it’s the 10th anniversary.

The panel (小组) of judges has doubled in size compared to previous years. The panel has a group of industry experts who are eager to see what this year’s participants can share. And there’s a great team of NPR’s Music station hosts on the panel: Amelia Mason, Novena Carmel and Stas THEE Boss.

Also new this year: Not only will the 2024 winner play a Tiny Desk concert, be interviewed on All Things Considered and go on tour with NPR Music — they’ll also be paired with a tutor in the industry who will help them navigate their music journey. Our judges are determined to give this year’s winner the support they’ll need to take their music to the next level. The winner will also be featured at two festivals this summer: Celebrate Brooklyn and the Millennium Park Summer Music series in Chicago.

And for the first time this year, the Contest is introducing a fan favorite vote. Later this spring, Contest judges will share their favorite entries as part of the annual Tiny Desk-Contest Top Shelf series on YouTube — and then artists and fans will be able to vote for their favorite among those selections.

Here’s how to enter: Record a video of you playing one original song — behind a desk, upload your video to YouTube, and submit the video on our Tiny Desk Contest website by Feb. 21 at 11: 59 p. m.

From an early age, Patti Wilson was told that she was an epileptic (癫痫患者). However, she was a lively and enthusiastic girl, looking at her illness as simply “an inconvenience”. She never focused on what she had lost, but on what she had left. One day, Patti said to her father, who was a morning jogger, “Daddy, I’d really love to run with you every day, but I’m afraid I’ll have an epileptic fit.”

Her father told her, “Don’t worry, my girl. I know how to handle it! Let’s start running then!”

It was a wonderful experience for the father and daughter to run together every day. After a few weeks, the ambitious girl told her father, “Daddy, What I’d really love to do is to break the world’s long-distance running record for women.” The father checked the Guinness Book of World Records and found that the farthest any woman had run was 80miles.

That year, she completed her run to San Francisco, which is a distance of 400 miles. She was wearing a T-shirt, reading, “I Love Epileptics”. Her father ran every mile at her side, and her mom, a nurse, followed in a motor home behind them in case anything went wrong. But nothing happened at all while she was running.

As a senior high school student, Patti announced that she was determined to run from her hometown up to the White House, which is a distance of more than 3000 miles away. Her classmates got behind her. They built a giant poster that read, “Run, Patti, Run!” This has since become her motto and the title of a book she later has written.

Jonathan’s mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up. Both of them shared a very special relationship. Football was not just a game for Jonathan; it was a bond between him and his father. Every match, regardless of whether he played or not, his father would be there, a constant source of firm support.

Though his size prevented him from joining the main team, Jonathan’s determination burned brighter than ever. With each practice, he improved his skills, fueled by the belief that someday his perseverance would pay off. Despite the doubts cast upon him, he pushed forward, never allowing anything to make his passion disappear.

One day, as the sun cast long shadows on the field, the coach approached Jonathan with a telegram (电报) in hand. The weight of the message pressed heavily on the young man’s heart as he read the words that forever changed his world. He swallowed hard and his voice shook as he turned to the coach.

“My father... he died this morning,” Jonathan uttered, his voice filled with sorrow. His body trembled with the weight of his sadness, threatening to consume him. Tears flooded his eyes, rolling down his cheeks.

The coach, understanding Jonathan’s loss, enveloped him in a comforting embrace. The warmth of his arm around Jonathan’s shoulder provided a temporary comfort. Softly, the coach spoke words of relief and understanding, giving Jonathan the time and space he needed to process his overwhelming sorrow.

“Take the rest of the week off, son,” the coach said gently, his voice filled with sympathy. “And don’t even plan to come to the game on Saturday. Your well-being matters more than anything.”

On the day of the game, Jonathan’s college team was losing badly to the opponent team. The coach and the players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them. Jonathan ran up to the coach and begged him to allow him to play this match.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要分析了在很累的情况下是否需要坚持锻炼。

6 . It’s the end of another long day at the office after a poor night’s sleep. As usual, you’re exhausted, yet you want to stop at the gym on the way home to get the exercise you need to stay healthy.     1     This is a widespread problem.

To be healthy, the body needs to move through four stages of sleep several times each night. During the first and second stages, the body starts to decrease its rhythms.     2     Rapid eye movement sleep, called ram, is the final stage in which we dream. Studies have shown that missing ram sleep may lead to health problems. On the other hand, years of research has found sleep boosts immune functioning.

3     Without sleep, your muscles can’t recover from the stress you put them through during workouts. “You have to give them time to recover and grow stronger,” said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta. “You’re more likely to suffer an injury when you’re exhausted due to slowed reaction times from your tired brain during the workout.”     4     You might find yourself fearing your normal workouts.

Use common sense, experts said. If you’re not sleeping well, don’t go for that intense workout.     5     If you’re pressed for time, consider fitting in several short bouts of exercise throughout your day. “Everything counts,” Dasgupta said. “Do anything that makes you feel happy and refreshed. This is about hitting the reset button for yourself, not doing some form of exercise because you feel it necessary to.”

A.Walk or do yoga instead.
B.How does sleep affect our brain?
C.Should you work out when suffering from sleep loss?
D.Poor sleep can affect your motivation to exercise too.
E.It may be unwise to play a sport when you’re very tired.
F.Enough workout can guarantee your good health and happiness.
G.Doing so prepares us for the third stage where the body is restoring itself.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Reuben sat on the bench during gym class, daydreaming. As his classmates fought comparatively up and down the basketball court, he was imagining a different game — one in which a group of colorful bricks turned around quickly and side-stepped and dunked (扣篮). At the center of this spinning circle he could see a giant basketball… made out of Lego bricks(乐高积木).

A few weeks earlier, he had built exactly that kind of huge Lego basketball. It was for a city-wide art contest that everyone was excited about: the prize was a $100 check for the student artist and a visit to the winner’s school by the world-famous basketball team — The Lakers. Since he had submitted his entry, Reuben kept dreaming about his creation, imagining it would show his classmates how good he was. at something!

Reuben was caught up in his basketball ballet, imagining the bricks move closer ... and closer ..Suddenly, a sharp whistle abruptly interrupted his thoughts, followed by an urgent shout from the teacher: “Reuben!”

Surprised, he jumped to his feet.

“Where is your attention, young man? I had to call you three times. Now go take Lamar’s place.” “Who, Reuben? He’s too busy building Lego things in his head,” Lamar yelled as their classmates laughed.

Of course Lamar was right. Worse still, Reuben was the tallest boy in his class, and his combination of his height, long arms, and wiry fingers screamed “basketball player”. Therefore, Reuben was expected not just to be good at basketball, he was expected to be great!

But he was neither. Chasing and shooting balls was not his thing. He was clumsy (笨拙的) on the court. He loved to build and design and draw things. Once, he even recreated a mouse trap, making it humane (人性化的).

“Why worry about mice?” mom complained. “They eat our rice!”

“But mice sing to communicate and feel empathy for other mice, Mom. And that some carry seeds to other parts of the environment, which helps things grow!”

“Huh,” his mom said, then frowned and replied, “Even so, mice are no use to no one.” “Mice matter too, Mom!” Reuben replied.
