Last Saturday, I took part in a singing competition held by our school. A total of 32 contestants participated in the contest.
As it was my first participation, I was really excited about it. Before the contest, I had a fortnight to prepare and practice. After choosing my favorite song to compete, I practiced singing the song every day diligently. I also sang in front of my family members and friends. In order to improve, I asked for their advice, comments and suggestions. They were of great assistance to me. With their help, I was able to improve tremendously.
Two weeks later, the day of the competition arrived. My family members and friends accompanied me to my school. When we arrived,most of the other competitors were already there. Not long after,the contest commenced. The majority of participants who sang before me performed well. Upon seeing their fine performance, I was a little nervous and suffered from a slight stage fright.
When it was my turn to sing, I walked up the stage. While I was facing the audience, I was afraid as never before had I sung in front of such a large crowd. I lost my self-confidence. When I was about to give up and leave the stage, I saw my family members and friends. Smiling friendly at me, they clapped and cheered loudly to encourage me.
“You can do it, Lily!” shouted my best friend Mia.

On a hot 95-degree evening in September 2016, the Woodlands High School JV White team was threatening to win its first game of the season. The fans and players alike were almost crazy. “I was really pumped,” said Highlanders linebacker Ryan Ferrini, then 16.
With little time left in the fourth quarter and the Katy Tompkins High School Falcons up 29-28, all the Highlanders had to do was go one yard for a touchdown to grab a dramatic come-from-behind victory.
Instead, they gave the game away.
On the previous play, after the Highlanders had driven the ball deep into the Falcons’ territory, quarter back Will Gentry had connected with then-15-year-old receiver Austin Brauweiler at the three-yard line. As Brauweiler turned up field, a Falcons defender delivered a violent hit, knocking them both to the ground at the one-yard line.
“There was huge force, as if a truck had hit me,” said Brauweiler, who suffered a bruised bone from the collision. But it was the Falcons’ player who got the worst of it. He lay motionless on the turf (草皮). Trainers and coaches ran to his side. Five minutes later, he was still down. Game officials told Highlanders coach David Colschen that the teen had lost all feeling on his left side and an ambulance had been called. “I was very upset,” said Brauweiler.
The EMTs (内科急救专家) arrived, and soon after, a call to a medical transport helicopter was made. That’s when the Falcons’ coach walked across the field and told Colschen that his players were too worried to finish the game and would give up the game. Colschen wouldn’t have it.

I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen， whom I met in a Facebook group. Three years ago, on December 30, the two of us drove to Oregon to tackle Mount Hood, a 3,400-metre volcano.
It’s safer to start climbs at night, when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. We started our climbing at 3 am, following the paths alongside the ski runs. It was about -10 ℃, and we wore easily removed layers, knowing we didn’t want to get too hot on the climb. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together. After about five hours, we reached a plateau at about 3,000 metres, just before the final push up the mountain. By this point, it felt like my exposed skin was burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but we went ahead.
At around 9 a.m., we reached an ice step about a metre tall and sloping at around 75 degrees. I volunteered to go up ahead of Mel. Then I suddenly heard a crack, and a whole slab of ice broke off the step, right under my toot.
First I fell backwards, and then I slid. I could hear Mel calling my name as I bounced off the rock face. I remember thinking, This is it. You’re done. I stretched out my arms and legs so I wouldn’t turn over down the mountain. I’d fallen about 200 metres. My clothes were shredded, my helmet was broken, and I had cuts and scratches all over my face.
When I hit the ground, I was buzzing. I started to see where I was hurt. When I reached my left leg, I couldn’t feel anything. So I tied moving my toes. That worked—at least I wasn’t paralyzed (瘫痪).
As Mel made her way down, I started yelling for help, and a bunch of other climbers came to assist me.

When we got to the bottom of Mount Hood, I was taken straight to a hospital, where I stayed for four days.

Rivaldo was playing football from the age of 4. When he was 7, he joined a local football club. He attended the training regularly but never got a chance to play in matches. But the coach had faith in him. He told Rivaldo that he should focus on his training, and one day he would get the chance. Rivaldo had no other option but to continue training in the club. He was training very hard and focused on improving himself.
Even after two years in the club, he never played in a match. He was not even allowed to travel along with the team. One day their club had a charity match, where a famous footballer was a chief guest. While the team was planning to travel, one of the support staff who used to take care of kits got ill. So, they needed someone for this.
The coach thought this should be an opportunity for Rivaldo. So, he told him to travel with the team and take care of the kits. Other support staff objected to it, but he convinced them.
The team reached the stadium. There were a lot of crowds to witness the celebrity footballer. For Rivaldo, this is his first-time experience in the stadium. He was helping the other players with the kits for the pre-match training. The coach came for a chat with Rivaldo. He told Rivaldo, “You are playing today.”
Rivaldo, for a moment, got frozen and asked him why. He said, “One of the players from the team got injured while training. So, we are short of players. We need someone to be in the field to make it 11. But I know you are more than that. So, go and prove yourself”. There was resistance from the support staff. Luckily for Rivaldo, the coach, through the organizing committee, convinced Rivaldo’s team management to allow him to play.

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.
She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.” “I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
Lucy’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”
Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

The cheering from the my classmates grew louder as I reached the final turn. I found myself in the lead. I knew better than to look back at the runners behind me. That would slow me down. Besides, I could hear them breathing. I launched into my sprint(冲刺).
I pumped my arms harder as I pounded down the straightaway. It made my legs go faster. I don’t know what strange connection in the body makes that work, but it does. I threw my chest forward into the string. It dropped across my body. I thudded to a stop.
I was breathing hard, but at least I was still on my feet.
“You made it in sixty-eight seconds,” Coach Setlich told me. “That’s good enough for third place overall. Nice job, Denise.”
I smiled and nodded, since I didn’t have enough breath to answer. I was exhausted but I had to walk slowly around so my muscles wouldn’t tighten up.
A few minutes later, Coach Setlich found me resting on the high-jump mats. She looked worried. “Denise, I need you to run the relay. Tracy pulled a muscle in the long jump.”
I pushed up onto my elbows. “I’m not a sprinter.”
“Not the sprint relay. The medley (混合接力). I want you to run the last leg (赛程) . Amanda and Cindy, each one hundred meters. Megan ,two hundred meters, one lap (圈).”
I looked at her with horror. “You want me to run four hundred meters again?” I screamed.
She nodded. “We have a shot at second or third in the team standings if your relay does well.” the coach’s eyes glowed. Second place may not sound exciting, but we had been near the bottom of the standings all season. Now in the league championships, we were definitely showing improvement. I struggled to my feet. “Couldn’t I run the two-hundred-meter leg instead?”
Coach shook her head. “The other girls on your relay team are sprinters and they don’t understand the pacing for the longer distance.” she said.
