3 . One Sunday, Mark decided to go sailing in his boat with his friend Dan, but Dan happened to be away. Dan’s brother John offered to go instead though he did not know anything about sailing. Mark agreed and they set out to sea.
Soon they found themselves in a thick fog. Mark was sure they would be hit by a big ship. Fortunately he saw a large buoy (浮标) through the fog and decided to tie the boat to it for safety. As he was getting onto the buoy, however, he dropped the wet rope. The boat moved away in the fog carrying John, who did not know how to use the radio. He drifted (漂流) about and was not seen until twelve hours later.
Mark spent the night on the buoy. In the early morning he fell asleep. He was having a bad dream when a shout woke him up. A ship, the Good Hope, came up and he climbed onto it and thanked the captain. The captain told him that John had been picked up by another ship and the ship’s captain had sent out a message. “Without the message I would not have found you on the buoy,” he said.

4 . The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit instead of insects (昆虫). Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out flying. A group will live in one place for years. Sometimes several hundred of them occupy (占据) a single tree. As they return to the tree toward sunrise in the morning, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places until long after daylight.
Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only one each time. At first the mother has to carry the baby on her breast wherever she goes. Later she leaves it hanging up, and brings back food for it to eat. Sometimes a baby bat falls down to the ground and squeaks (尖叫) for help. Then the older ones swoop (俯冲) down and try to pick it up. If they fail to do so, it will die. Often hundreds of dead baby bats can be found lying on the ground at the foot of a tree.

6 . Having a microchip implanted in a man’s brain may be common in sci-fi movie plots, but it may soon become an actual possibility.
Elon Musk -- a US tech tycoon, founder of Space X -- has been working on this technology. On Aug 28, Musk gave a display of the chip, which was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude. The chip, developed by Musk’s company Neuralink, is just as small as the size of a coin. But don’t let its size fool you. The tiny chip has over 3,000 electrodes(电极) attached to flexible threads(线), which can monitor about 1,000 neurons(神经元). It collects neural signals from an area of the brain, and then wirelessly transmits those signals to nearby computers, according to MSN. That enabled researchers to monitor Gertrude’s brain activity while she was walking around in the display.
Though the technology is still in its early stage, it is encouraging for humans. This technology would solve a lot of brain injuries and is essential for AI symbiosis(共存关系), which will allow the human brain to combine with an artificial intelligence. When the device can be applied to humans, its main goal will be to help those who have mobility difficulties. Musk hopes this technology can also be used to help those with hearing and eyesight issues.
Although such a device could repair those problems, putting it into practice is by no means a piece of cake. Currently, the device can transmit signals from about 500 neurons in the pig’s brain. Compared to 80 billion neurons in a human brain, this number is extremely tiny. And to cover the whole human brain also means the electrodes have to be much smaller.
Also, implanting the chip into the brain poses a potential danger. There is a risk of the immune system attacking this foreign body. Right now, the hope of controlling the brain by controlling just a few neurons seems overly optimistic. “There are still so many technological challenges, especially the possible risks it may cause, to overcome before Neuralink can put its devices to the purposes,” Yuan Lanfeng, an associate professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China Daily.

7 . The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the 73-year-old novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his firm and passionate descriptions of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gap between cultures and continents.
Born in Zanzibar in 1948, Gurnah arrived in England as a refugee in the late 1960s. At the age of 21, he began to write in English. He worked as a professor of English and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent until his recent retirement this year.
Gurnah is the first black African author to have won the award since Wole Soyinka in 1986. He has published 10 novels and a number of short stories. The theme of the refugee’s sufferings runs through his works. His 1994 novel Paradise, which told the story of a boy growing up in Tanzania in the early 20th century, won the Booker Prize and marked his breakthrough as a novelist. And his most recent work Afterlives picks up the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the German colonization of Africa. His novels open our eyes to a culturally diversified East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.
Gurnah said his award would mean issues such as the refugee crisis and colonialism, which he had experienced, would be “discussed”. “These are things that are with us every day. People are dying; people are being hurt around the world. We must deal with these issues in the kindest way.” He said, “The world is much more violent than it was in the 1960s, so there is now greater pressure on the countries that are safe. They unavoidably draw more people.”
In an interview in 2016, when asked if he would call himself an “author of postcolonial and/or world literature”, Gurnah replied, “I would not use any of those words. I wouldn’t call myself a something writer of any kind. In fact, I am not sure that I would call myself anything apart from my name.”

8 . Don’t you want to talk less and smile more? That seems to be Amazon’s vision for the future of the smart home. According to the company, talking to their devices is just a temporary stage. Next, their gadgets (小玩意) will just know what we want and do it for us without a single command. To plot this route, the consumer tech giant showed off a series of new gadgets at its annual hardware event in September, 2020.
This vision of a smart home has been the road map for home automation for decades. A true smart home doesn’t just react to commands, it can foresee what will happen and take action accordingly. This could include lights switching on when you arrive home, heating turning off when the house is empty, or security drones (无人机) activating when somebody breaks in. Amazon says it’s ready for this domestic revolution, even if it’s still a few decades off.
Connectivity is the guarantee of a true smart home. The updated Echo smart speaker line that was recently displayed doesn’t just have a showy new look, it comes with a suite of tech to keep everything connected. This extended network, which will be launched in the US in later 2021, is designed to support expanding the smart home out to the smart garden and the smart driveway and beyond to the smart neighbourhood.
At the event, Amazon also showed off an actual robot. The Ring Always Home Cam ($ 250, coming in 2021) was perhaps the most fancy offering from the event, and certainly raised a fair number of eyebrows. At roughly 13cm high, the Always Home Cam is a drone with a camera. It rises up from its docking station and flies on pre-set paths. If a security event is detected, it will send warnings to your phone.
Ultimately, a true smart home won’t just rely on voice commands or drones. The less aggressive tech such as sensors, computer vision, and AI will work together to respond to our needs without violating our privacy. But, as Limp says, the true smart home “is a long-term vision, and there’s still lots to be done to make that a reality”.

James Selton was one of the rudest boys in the village where he lived: If a person in the street was well dressed, he would cry out, “Dandy(花花公子)!” If a person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.
One afternoon, just as the school was over, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a walking stick in his hand, on the end of which was a parcel, and he wore a round hat.
No sooner had James seen the stranger than he winked to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, knocked off his hat, and ran away.
The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before the man could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again James approached; but this time, the man caught him by the arm, and held him tightly. However, he contented himself with looking James a moment in the face, and then pushed him away. As soon as the naughty boy found himself free again, he began to throw dirt and stones at the stranger.
But James was very frightened when the man was struck on the head by a brick and badly hurt. All the boys ran away, and James slipped across the fields to his home.
As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told James that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had bought beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left his carriage at the inn, a mile or two off and walked on foot so as to surprise his brother, their father.
