2 . A new research reveals that you cannot separate your health from your emotions and numerous studies support the idea that having an optimistic and positive attitude can translate into living a longer and healthier life. For example, in one older study, pessimism (悲观) was linked to a 19 percent higher risk of dying over a 30-year period.
After examining the associations between optimism and heart health in more than 5,100 adults of various ethnic groups for 11 years, researchers at the University of Illinois report that people who display a more optimistic can-do attitude in life experience significantly better cardiovascular (心血管) health over the long term.
People who were the most optimistic were up to 76 percent more likely to have a total health score in the ideal range. The health scores were based on seven aspects used by the American Heart Association (AHA) to define heart health. This includes blood pressure, body mass index, fasting blood sugar, serum cholesterol levels, diet, exercise and smoking. According to study author Rosalba Hernandez, individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the chances of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic peers. This association remains significant, even after adjusting for social population characteristics and poor mental health. At the population level, even this slight difference in cardiovascular health translates into a significant reduction in death rates.
This evidence, which is assumed to occur through a bio-behavioral mechanism, suggests that prevention strategies that target modification of psychological well-being-e. g. optimism-may be a potential avenue for AHA to reach its goal of improving Americans’ cardiovascular health by 20 percent before 2020.

4 . Aesha Ash is a Ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer who began the Swan Dreams Project in 2011. It is a program designed to bring ballet to girls of color in her community. Aesha Ash is one of the few women of color to ever grace the stages of New York City Ballet School of American Ballet. She wants to expose her community to more positive images of women of color through the use of ballet. She wants to show the world that beauty and grace are not defined by status or race.
Aesha grew up in the inner city of Rochester, New York, where crime, gun violence and poverty were among the biggest threats to the community. For her, that’s normal. That’s just life in the neighborhood, but what she remembers most is the dance studio.
She started dancing all together at the age of five. A teacher mentioned to her mother that she had some promise in ballet, and that it would be difficult for her, as a woman of color, to enter the ballet world. But the adversity (逆境) she faced was the very thing that pushed her to pursue a career in ballet.
And there’s so much negative stereotyping (刻板印象) and misunderstanding of who they are in the media. Through the use of imagery and her career as a ballet dancer, she challenges stereotypes that exist for women of color, particularly those from inner-city communities.
“It’s important that our girls see that side of themselves because for many kids it’s hard to be what you can’t see. I didn’t see a black ballet dancer before I decided that’s what I wanted to be. It was really important for me to be in my environment displaying that because this is where I’m from. It was always beyond ballet.” Aesha Ash stated.

8 . Sometimes maybe you take vitamins to support brain function, or stock up on foods that promote brain health. But new guidelines (指南) from the American Academy of Neurology suggest there are better things you can do to keep your mind sharp.
According to the AAN, one in four adults between the ages of 80 and 84 have mild cognitive impairment. To address this wide-spread problem, a group of neurologists and Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症的) experts went through existing research to determine the best ways to prevent and treat cognitive decline----and you might be surprised by what they included and what they didn’t.
Surprisingly, the AAN guidelines do not include any medication(药物) or dietary recommendations. The authors stress that no high-quality long-term studies finding that food or drugs can help with cognitive decline. The guidelines also say doctors may consider recommending cognitive training to patients with memory loss, but not to rely on it. So far, the report’s authors say the evidence is too inconclusive to say for sure if brain exercises, like memory and attention training or problem solving for everyday issues associated with memory loss, are beneficial. Still, these morning brain exercises can’t do any harm.
But there was one big discovery from the new guidelines: exercising just twice a week could improve cognitive decline. One study showed adults with mild cognitive impairment who did resistance training twice a week scored better on executive function and associative(联想的) memory tests than a group that worked on balancing, stretching, and relaxing.
What’s more, another study had older adults attend either biweekly health classes or sessions of aerobics, strength training balance exercises, and multitasking training. Six months later, the ones who’d exercised regularly scored better on cognitive health and memory tests, plus had less brain shrinkage.
The AAN now recommends that doctors tell patients with memory loss to exercise twice a week to keep their minds clear. If you want to improve your memory, this is the best time to exercise. It looks like you’ve got just one more reason to clear time in your schedule for a workout---even if it’s only on the weekends.
