3 . There are many traditions around the world that are interesting and fun, but there are also those that are bizarre (奇异的) and even a little cruel.
In Sweden it's common for parents to leave their babies outside to nap (小睡) even when the temperatures are below zero. Many of us would find this custom dangerous, but many Swedes actually consider it good for their babies. They believe that by exposing their young ones to their country's cold temperature they can help their babies to grow up healthily and protect them from diseases. They also believe doing so will help them sleep longer and better.
In Bali, Indonesia, babies are forbidden to touch the ground for three months. The reason is that during the baby's first months its connection to the “spirit” is still unbroken and clean and letting it touch the ground would defile it. For three months, the baby is constantly held in someone's arms―the father, mother, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and even neighbours. After 105 days, a special ceremony called the Nyabutan is held where the baby touches Mother Earth for the first time.
In Guatemala, it's common to see babies being bathed with cold water. Maya mothers commonly practise this bizarre ritual (仪式) with the belief that it's beneficial to the baby's health. Bathing their babies with cold water is also an effective means to eliminate heat rashes, and this custom helps babies sleep better.
Some Indians allow their babies to be thrown from temple roofs as high as 50 feet. This strange custom started 500 years ago and continues to this day, though there's a movement to ban it for obvious reasons. However, Hindus believe that performing this ritual brings good luck and health to their babies. Below the roof is a bed sheet that's held tightly by several men. The baby lands safely on the sheet. The tradition's practitioners and believers strongly prove that it's safe, saying no babies have ever been injured.

Studying abroad is the realization of the dream, which might have been in your heart since you were kid. You are not alone. In recent years, studying abroad is getting more and more popular in China.
Of course, studying abroad provides a whole new opportunity to explore a completely new culture. You will experience new climate, new food and new customs, thus broadening your horizons. You can also learn a new language, so that you will become fluent in the language at last. Staying in a different country far from your parents makes you absolutely free to do whatever you like, and you have to learn to depend on yourself.
But, like all the other things under the sun, studying abroad also has certain disadvantages. People from different cultural backgrounds have different habits. So you will have to change many of your habits and adapt yourself to new culture. Furthermore, you may feel lonely and homesick. In addition, the living costs and tuition fees will be high, which will become a heavy burden upon your parents.
Whatever you do, both new opportunities and challenges will present themselves. Of course, you can’t be afraid of facing challenges. The most important thing is that you should take all the challenges into consideration before you make a decision to study abroad. My advice is: look before you leap.

5 . Several days ago, Madelyn McClarey's twin sons, Aaron and Aubrey Hough, both received scholarships to Florida A&M University. The mother found that if her twin sons moved seven hours' drive north from Hollywood to Tallahassee, she'd be lucky to see them on weekends.
But her sons had something else in mind. The twins told her they'd move to Tallahasseeon one condition: she had to go with them and work toward the college degree she'd always wanted. And that is how MeClarey ended up in a green cap and gown (学位服) this month at FAMU. Cheering her on were her twins. "Our mom is so determined and hardworking. We're lucky to have her as our mother," said Aaron. "It was a lot of hard work, but she never gave up."
McClarey's sons jumped as she was awarded a bachelor's degree (学士学位) in English and they were very excited because their mom finally had the degree she'd dreamed about for more than 20 years. Her professional goals were put on hold when she became a single mom caring for two kids. Before motherhood, McClarey had gone to business school.
McClarey, who described herself as "40ish", said that when her sons insisted she go with them to college four years ago, her jaw (下巴) dropped, saying most teens are eager to start lives away from their parents once they graduate from high school. She said, "But I was also happy when I realized they weren't joking and weren't going to leave home unless I moved with them, I said, “Well, all right, let's go.”
Now that MeClarey has graduated, she doesn't plan to leave Tallahassee anytime soon. She wants to stick around to encourage and support her sons, but there is also another matter to tend to. "My goal is to become an author someday," she said. "So this summer, I'll be working on getting my master's degree."

10 . Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could spend Christmas Eve with my family.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. "Dad, Merry Christmas!" my younger son said. I got downstairs just to see the little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. The real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection(检查)had been completed, the two boys dragged everything into the centre of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering what unexpected gift this year I would receive. The children were happily opening packages but I received not a single one. I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily, but I tried not to show it.
My youngest son was so kind. He passed me a box saying, "Daddy, it is a gift from Santa Claus for me. But he won't mind that I will give it to a poor dad, right?" I smiled knowing the gift was the one I put in the stocking. I thanked him and gave him a big hug.
Suddenly my wife said, "We haven't forgotten you. Look at the tree." There was an envelope in the tree, addressed to me. I opened it and read, "You have one day off from your job to spend with us. Welcome back home. Merry Christmas!"
Outside, snow was falling, a usual event for a New York Christmas. I was surrounded by an act of love, I smiled at first and cried like a little boy.
