2 . At the beginning of Grade Two, I joined the cross-country running team in our school.

When I came to the first practice, I was filled with optimism. But as the distance we ran in each practice gradually increased from three to four, to six miles, I realized with surprise that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to run as fast as others. In fact, I was one of the slowest on the team.

What was the point of putting myself through so much pain? After the first few weeks, I wanted to quit.

Then we had our first cross-country meet.

When we started the race, I felt the great pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. And after a while I stopped running and struggled to walk up the hill. But then I heard my coaches shouting my name from the top of the hill. I felt confused and embarrassed; why were they cheering for me? I was running terribly! As I tried my best to finish the race, I realized that my coaches didn’t care how fast I ran. Neither did my teammates. During the rest of the season, they were always on the sidelines of every race, cheering for me just as loudly as they’d cheered for the front runner.

From then on, I began to put my effort into supporting my teammates instead of focusing on my own performance. In that way, I celebrated my teammates’ victories as if they were my own; I felt their pain and exhaustion as if they were my own.

Cross-country running made me realize I don’t need to be the best to be successful in life. It taught me to value my relationships with people more than my relationship with my ego. It taught me to cheer for others even if I don’t know their names.

1. Why did the author want to give up after the first few weeks?
A.He had much pain in his knees.
B.He didn’t perform well in long-distance running.
C.He couldn’t get along well with others
D.He showed no interest in running.

3 . Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1, 500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use email to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fastfood restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State highereducation officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

1. The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to ________.
A.use for their schoolwork

2. Which of the following is TRUE about Westlake College?
A.All teachers use computers.
B.1, 500 students have laptops.
C.It is an old college in America.

3. “A window on the world” in the last paragraph means that students can ________.
A.attend lectures on information technology
B.travel around the world
C.get information from around the world
D.have free laptops
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The program is successful.
B.The program is not workable.
C.The program is too expensive.
D.We don’t know the result yet.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述的是作者小时候和父母捡到了一只大雁,把它带回家养大,有一天飞走了,但是20年后这只大雁又回到了作者家里的故事。

4 . When I was seven, my family and I were coming back from a T-ball game. In our driveway, we spotted two adult geese and a small gosling. The adults were frightened by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow.

Hours passed and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen, and it was clear that the gosling needed protection, warmth and food to make it to the morning. At that point, we had to bring him into our backyard.

We all pretty much slept with one eye open for several days. Each morning, we would try to rush the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to claim him. The young goose had clearly decided we were his new family, and my twin sister Joanna called the little guy Peeper.

Almost a year passed and we settled into a routine filled with feathery hugs and company. One evening my uncle came over, and my dad threw Peeper up into the air to show he could fly around the house, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very sad. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.

In 2019, an aging adult goose made his way back to my home. At first, I assumed it was just another Canada goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly, it became clear to me that this wasn’t a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door and sleeping in our enclosed pool area. Besides, this goose responded to the name Peeper. Much to my amazement, my old best friend had returned, 20 years later.

1. Why did the author bring the little goose home that night?
A.It couldn’t find its parents.
B.It was too fragile to survive.
C.It wanted to stay in the yard.
D.It enjoyed the author’s company.
2. What does the underlined word “claim” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Get.
B.Forgive.
C.Challenge.
D.Annoy.
3. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.She named the goose Peeper.
B.She set Peeper free on purpose.
C.She had a deep feeling to Peeper.
D.She trained the goose to fly daily.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Feathered Family Member
B.The Return of a Long Lost Friend
C.The Reunion of a Goose Family
D.An Adventurous Journey Home

Language is the best approach to    1    ( understand) a country. We know that language is a bridge for people to communicate. Chinese is one of the most beautiful languages in the world as well as    2    most-spoken one.

The beauty of Chinese language lies in its form, structure and rhythm. Every sound, stroke, word and sentence have their own stories. In the process of learning Chinese,I hope you will learn to appreciate the Chinese language and its profound cultural heritage. Some foreign friends say that Chinese is difficult    3    ( learn). It shows that those who learn Chinese have great courage and    4    ( wise).

Only after learning Chinese will you know the meaning    5    ( contain) in the Chinese characters. For example, the Chinese character “人”which means “people” consists    6     two supporting strokes, showing people need to support each other. The Chinese character “大”which means “big or great” is like the Chinese character“人”opening arms. This means people opening arms are of great vision. The Chinese character“天”is like “人”standing against the sky. That’s the reason    7    it has the meaning of “sky”. The Chinese character“信”means “trust”. Its left side is “人” and the right side “言” which means “words”. When the two parts    8    ( put) together, it means people keeping their words win trust. 10 . Feeling stressed out and over-loaded? Try smiling. According to recent studies, smiling has the power to reduce stress and increase our ability to deal with hard situations.    1    . It also can force us to breathe deeper, resulting in a calmer outlook and increased ability to deal with problems.

Smiling tends to produce chemicals. When you smile, even when you force it, your body releases the “feel good” hormones and endorphins (安多芬),which will put you in a much better mood and relieve stress. Endorphins interact mainly with receptors (接收器) in cells found in regions of the brain responsible for blocking pain and controlling emotion.     2

Smiling can improve your physical health. Your body is more relaxed when you smile.    3    . In addition to making you look more attractive, successful and approachable, smiling may also protect you from the common cold. According to recent data, smiling can help boost the immune system by decreasing stress levels, which in turn increases white blood cell count and releases beneficial antibodies that help fight infection and disease.

4    . It is rare to smile when reading a funny passage from a book on our own, but when that same passage is read out loud to us, or even if other people are in the room, most people are likely to smile then. Have you ever been around someone who seemed to be smiling all the time? Chances are,you found yourself smiling as well. This is because smiling is incredibly infectious.     5    . So, next time you're feeling down, seek out your happiest friend and let the smiles begin.

A.Smiling is infectious
B.Smiling is ignored by most people
C.We all need to find the person whom we'd like to smile to
D.It contributes to good health and a stronger immune system
E.Happy people can easily influence the people closest to them
