1 . Since the 1950s, some 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced globally, of which only about 10% has ever been recycled. Yet environmentally conscious companies and consumers continue to look to recycling as a way to ease the plastic problem. Manufacturing giants claim to be committed to making more of their products and packaging from recycled materials. However, this confidence masks (掩饰) a complex web of issues around plastic recycling. Recycling rates remain extremely low and critics argue that we should look at alternative ways to tackle plastic pollution.

While many plastics have the potential to be recycled, most are not because the process is costly, complicated and the resulting product of a lower quality than the original. Despite rising demand for recycled plastic, few waste companies turn a profit. Part of this is because virgin plastic—linked to oil prices—is often cheaper than recycled plastic, meaning there is little economic motive to use it. Worse yet, much of our plastic waste is difficult to recycle. Lightweight food packaging, like a mozzarella packet, contains different plastics, dyes and toxic additives (添加剂). This dirty mix means plastic recycled through mechanical methods—the most common form—can only be melted down and moulded again a couple of times before it becomes too fragile to be reused. And the nature of the process means plastic recycling has a carbon footprint of its own.

Given all of these difficulties, environmental critics say recycling is not the solution and argue that creating more products from recycled material to attract environmental consciousness merely worsens the problem. “The solution is to use less plastic and to stop misleading the public about the recyclability,” says Enck, president of Beyond Plastics, a US campaign group with a mission to end single-use plastic. “They should stop making false claims about the recyclability of plastics since they know most will either be littered or burned or landfilled (填埋). Using less plastics means shifting to reusable products and relying more on paper, cardboard, glass and metal—all of which should be made from recycled content.”

1. Which of the following statements would environmentally conscious companies support?
A.Recycling can’t solve the plastic problem.
B.Creating more products from recycled material can help ease plastic pollution.
C.The solution to plastic pollution is to use less plastic.
D.People should give up recycling because the recycling rates remain extremely low.
2. Which of the following is not the cause of the low recycling rate according to Paragraph 2?
A.The process is costly and complex.
B.Waste companies can’t make a profit.
C.The process of recycling has a carbon footprint.
D.Policy support is insufficient and people’s awareness of plastic recycling is insufficient.
3. What is Enck’s attitude towards recycling plastics?
A.DisapprovingB.UnclearC.NeutralD.Indifferent
4. What can we learn from the text?
A.An environmentally conscious customer’s attitude towards recycling plastics is not favorable.
B.Contributing factors to low plastic recycling rates.
C.Most plastics have the potential to be recycled.
D.Few waste companies turn a profit because the demand for recycled plastics is low.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍的是英国利用废弃煤矿来供应绿色能源,通过从地热水中获取热能来取暖和发电。这项创新方法已在Gateshead镇成功实施,对其他城镇也具有潜力。

4 . Nature has the power to alter an element’s identity with time and space. This is evident by the transformative effect Britain’s deep coal mines have been showing after decades of being one of the biggest reasons for pollution. Now, they’re being employed to supply green energy to the town of Gateshead. The town is the first place to experience something like this in the country, but the success of the phenomenon has encouraged the authorities to apply it to other towns.

In 2021, coal was just producing 2% of electricity in the UK. Most of the electricity in the country is being supplied through oil and gas. This has resulted in massive abandoned coal mines all across the country. As years went by, these mines were flooded with water, making it a source of geothermal(地热的) energy, which is used to generate heat and electricity. Gateshead hosts such a mine in its town, whose council, therefore, launched a mine water project in March 2023.

The authorities put in a large central heat pump in the mine. Mine water can often sit with a temperature of 45℃. The water is then pumped using appliances to home heat pumps. The process increases the temperature further. The water then goes ahead and warms up the interior space and home water supply. After the heat from the water has been used, it’s sent back to the mine where it again goes through the same process. The project has been successful in supplying low-carbon heating to 350 high-rise buildings, a college and several office buildings.

“Recovering heat from mine water below the ground within abandoned coal mines provides an exciting opportunity to generate a low-carbon secure supply of heat, benefitting people living or working in buildings on the coalfields,” said Gareth Farr, head of heat and by-product innovation at the Coal Authority.

The water resources through the mines are estimated to be two billion cubic meters or half the amount of water in Loch Ness. Farr added, “With many millions of people living upon abandoned coalfields in Great Britain, the potential for mine water heat could be significant.”

1. What does the town of Gateshead feature?
A.It’s been one of the most heavily polluted areas.B.It has the most deep coal mines nationally.
C.It mainly relies on geothermal energy.D.It is the first one to reuse abandoned coal mines.
2. Why were many coal mines abandoned in the UK?
A.They were quite remote.B.Prices of coal declined a lot.
C.There weren’t enough miners.D.The UK prioritizes cleaner energy.
3. What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.The number of abandoned coal mines is stably increasing.
B.The future of sourcing energy from coal mines is promising.
C.The dependence on water resources in the UK is decreasing.
D.The technique to take advantage of mine water is impressive.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.An innovative way to obtain green energy.B.A method of living in harmony with nature.
C.A national project for abandoned facilities.D.A discussion on the future of coal mines.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。一项研究表示,一个国家的特定文化价值观可能决定人们对环境问题的关注是否会促使个人做出环保行为。

5 . The specific cultural values of a country may determine whether concern about environmental issues actually leads individuals to engage in environmentally friendly behaviors, according to research published in Psychological Science.

Kimin Eom, a psychological scientist of the University of California, Santa Barbara, was inspired to investigate the links between culture, environmental concern, and environmental action after noticing that both public discussion and academic research on environmental behavior typically focus on people from Western countries. It is worth noticing because Western countries tend to have cultural values that prioritize individuals’ own attitudes and beliefs and encourage expression of them.

“The theory seemed to be that once individuals are led to believe in the urgency of environmental issues and have stronger concerns about sustainability (持续性), they will change and act to address the issues,” explains Eom. But this relationship might not hold for individuals living in more collectivistic (集体主义的) societies, which place more emphasis on social harmony and uniformity than on self-expression, Eom and his team assumed.

To examine what drives environmental action in individualistic and collectivistic cultures, the researchers conducted a study with participants from the United States (an individualistic culture) and Japan (a collectivistic culture). They found environmental concern was closely connected with environmental behavior — in this case, choosing environmentally friendly products — but only among American participants. On the other hand, believing that a large percentage of people engage in environmentally friendly behaviors was associated with making eco-friendly choices among Japanese participants, but not American participants.

The findings suggest that personal concerns are more likely to motivate people to take environmental action if they live in individualistic countries, while social norms (准则) are more likely to drive people to engage in environmentally friendly behavior if they live in collectivistic countries.

“Getting citizens actively engaged is critical to addressing urgent social challenges, such as climate change,” says Eom. “Our research suggests that scientists, policymakers, and activists need to understand how culture shapes the psychological factors of action to develop policies, campaigns, and interventions (干预) that address important social issues.”

1. What does Eom find about previous research on environmental behavior?
A.Its study participants are too limited.
B.Its results need a while to be achieved.
C.It prioritizes individuals’ attitudes and beliefs.
D.It draws much evidence from public discussion.
2. Under which condition will a Japanese man most likely take environmental action?
A.If he sees many others do so.
B.If he is affected by collectivistic values.
C.If he moves to an individualistic country.
D.If he worries about the environment personally.
3. What does Eom say about their research in the last paragraph?
A.It fails to take participants’ psychological factors into account.
B.It encourages scientists and policymakers to make joint efforts.
C.It has a further study direction towards urgent social challenges.
D.It provides insights into promoting public engagement in social issues.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Social Norms Play a Part in Addressing Pollution
B.Environmental Issues Originate from National Cultures
C.Motivating Eco-Friendly Behaviors Depends on Cultural Values
D.More Environmental Concerns Usually Mean More Green Action

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了澳大利亚科廷大学的一项研究发现,孩子们在自然环境中学习时更具创造力,并呈现了研究开展的过程、具体的发现,以及进一步研究的方向。

7 . Children are more creative when they learn in natural surroundings, according to new research from Curtin University. Primary school students in Australia and England were put to the test to see whether writing poetry in a natural outdoor setting produced more creative outcomes than writing in a classroom, and the answer was yes.

Dr Paul Gardner and Sonja Kuzich from Curtin’s School of Education ran relative trials with 10-year-old students in both countries and the results, recently published in the Cambridge Journal of Education, gave a big thumbs-up to the positive influence of natural settings. “We found that students who had direct contact with nature by immersing (沉浸) themselves in a bush or forest setting were much more descriptive and vivid in the language they used than the classroom-based writers who ‘imagined’ being in nature through photos,” Dr Gardner said.

In total, 97 students took part in the study, divided into four classrooms, including two based at an English primary school and two from a primary school in Western Australia. In each country one class visited a natural bush or forest before writing a poem based on what they saw, smelt and felt. The other class viewed a pile of images of the same bush or forest setting.

Ms Kuzich said the difference in creative language used between the classes was obvious with twice as many UK forest students using figurative (比喻的) language compared with the class-based students. In Australia that figure rose to more than four times when comparing the poetry of the forest-based students with those who remained at school.

The researchers say further studies of larger groups are now recommended to a gain greater understanding of the influence of natural spaces and “green learning” in schools.

A.The specific steps of the experiment.B.New findings about students’ writing.
C.The steps of training the children.D.The purpose of performing the test.
3. What can we infer about the result of the study?
A.Students indoors are not good at poetry.
B.Students in Australia prefer to study poetry.
C.Students are more creative in a natural environment.
D.Students in the UK and Australia have different writing skill preferences.
4. What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Green learning is becoming a trend.
B.Further studies are to be carried out.
C.Green learning has been applied in school.
D.Future research is of little significance.

8 . On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay became the first people to climb to the top of the world’s tallest mountain. The following day, as the weary expedition prepared for climbing down, leader John Hunt ordered his men to dump their extra equipment. The downward climb would be exhausting. The men could not have known that Mount Everest’s trash problem had begun.

Trash on Mount Everest ?

Yes! A lot of it. About 50 tons of garbage litters the slopes. Since 1953, thousands of people have climbed the world’s tallest mountain. Many dump their trash to lighten the load. None of it decomposes(分解) in the icy conditions.

A Trail of Corpses

At least 250 people have died climbing Mount Everest. Most bodies remain on the mountain, too heavy and large for other climbers to bring down. Frozen solid and still in their climbing clothes, the bodies serve as horrible trail markers. More deaths keep coming. Mount Everest’s deadliest day to date happened in April 2014, when 16 Nepali Sherpa guides died in an avalanche of ice and snow.

Garbage Crackdown

The government of Nepal now requires each expedition to pay a deposit of $4,000 before heading up the mountain. If climbers want their money back, they have to prove they brought down all of their own garbage, including their own bodily waste. That’s right--climbers have to carry their own poop. This year the government added another rule: In addition to their own trash, climbers must return with an extra 18 pounds of garbage.

Trash to Treasure

Some artists in Nepal are turning Everest’s trash into art. Fifteen artists created sculptures from a wide range of Mount Everest trash. By using the trash creatively, the artists hope to raise funds as well as awareness of the problem. Profits from art sold go back to an organization that has collected over 10 tons of garbage from the mountain.

1. Who began to litter trash there at first ?
A.16 Nepali Sherpa guides.B.Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay and John Hunt.
C.The government of Nepal.D.Some artists in Nepal.
2. How many persons have died there when climbing this mountain ?
A.250B.more than 250C.less than 250D.16
3. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to the underlined word “weary” ?

4. We can predict that _______________in future.
A.both the corpses and garbage will increase.
B.both the corpses and garbage will decrease.
C.the corpses will increase while the garbage will decrease.
D.the corpses will decrease while the garbage will increase.

文章大意:本文是应用文。文章是电视台关于海洋垃圾问题的采访录。

9 . You are welcome to our channel. An interest in the way ocean currents move led Dr. Erik van Sebille to track garbage. This Dutch scientist hopes that by making us aware of how much we litter our oceans, we’ll be motivated to better stash (存放) our garbage.

Question: Where does the garbage in our oceans come from ?
Answer: It can come from litter people leave behind on beaches. Or from things falling off ships. Almost every river’s garbage will end up in the ocean too. Plastic garbage is the biggest problem, though. That’s because it doesn’t easily break down. It can stay in the ocean for thousands of years. Eventually, it arrives at the garbage patches (垃圾带).
Question: Does this mean that ocean garbage is worse than garbage on land ?
Answer: Litter in the ocean is probably just as bad as litter in a forest or a park. The main problem in either place is that, if animals eat plastic pieces, they can become very ill. But we know how to solve the problem: Just stop polluting!
Question: Many persons love tossing a message in a bottle into the ocean. Is that a bad idea ?
Answer: Finding a bottle with a message in it is awesome, very special! But most bottles will never end up on a beach. They’ll turn up in the garbage patches, where it’s unlikely that someone will find them. If you want to play with ocean currents, go to the website and release virtual bottles. That way, you’re   not littering our oceans.
1. Animals can become very ill if they _______________.
A.turn up in the garbage patches.B.arrive at the garbage patches.

10 . Wood stork, which was on the brink of extinction in 1984, has recovered enough in Florida and other Southern states. The American wildlife officials proposed removing the waterfowl (水禽) from the endangered species list.

This symbolic species, which is the only stork native to North America, has rebounded (反弹) because dedicated partners in the southeast have worked tirelessly to restore ecosystems that support it. In addition, the wood stork has increased its range in coastal areas. The birds have adapted to new nesting areas, tripling the number of colonies across their range from 29 to 99 in recent years.

Credit goes mainly to the wildlife protections provided by the Endangered Species Act(ESA), which can impose restrictions on a variety of activities in areas where such species are, located, such as development, mining and oil drilling. The act saved the wood stork and it helped; preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call the area home. The Endangered Species Act has saved 99% of the species that have been on the list since 1973, with 100 types of plants and animals delisted because they have recovered or are at least stable.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that restoration of the wood stork’s habitat, especially in the Florida Everglades and adjacent Big Cypress National Preserve, led to a, sharp increase in breeding pairs. Those numbers had shrunk to just 5,000 pairs in 1984, whereas there are more than 10,000 pairs today.

“The proposed delisting of the wood stork is a significant milestone and a remarkable, achievement of the hard work by federal agencies, state and local governments, tribes, conservation organizations, and private citizens in protecting and restoring our most at-risk species,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said.

If the wood stork is delisted, officials said it would remain protected by other laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Clean Water Act. A monitoring plan, would be put in place for at least five years to ensure the stork population remains stable.

1. What can be inferred about the wood stork from the text?
A.Its population is increasing.B.It has already died out.
C.It is widely distributed worldwide.D.It is the most endangered species.
2. What contribute mostly to recovering the population of the wood stork?
A.Charity organizations.B.Federal agencies.
C.Protections of the ESA.D.Local companies.
3. What is Deb Haaland’s attitude to the delisting of the wood stork?
A.Negative.B.Doubtful.C.Indifferent.D.Positive.

A.Effect of the Big Cypress National Preserve Counts
B.Saving of the Endangered Wood Stork Progresses
C.Efforts to Restore the Wildlife Habitat Pay Off
