文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何避免将幸福寄托在未来。

1 . When it comes to happiness, our present selves habitually get deprived (剥夺).     1     In the middle of a busy workday, you think, “I’ll be happy when I get this done.” When you get the task done, you think, “I’ll be happy when I’m on vacation…”

When we are doing these, it’s as if we put true happiness in a package addressed to us at some future time when circumstances will be just right for it to happen. Yet, the package keeps getting lost.     2

What causes this? How can we avoid this result? We should know the reason why we make such choices and why our future selves seem like strangers to us is partially due to the abstractness of tomorrow. The solution is to make the future more vivid and create an emotional connection between the present and future selves. Here are several ways to strengthen the connection.

3     Write a letter to your future self and send back a reply. Then you may gain insights into your future self’s needs that would get you to take helpful action now.

Visualize the best version of yourself.     4     Importantly, focus on the contrast between now and later. What are the barriers that stand in the way of turning into that ideal future later? Once you recognize them, you could start working on them now.

Imagine yourself in old age. Looking back at now, what do you wish you would have done more or differently with your time?     5     And how can you prioritize the future now, so that when you look back on it later, you think of it fondly?

Once you do such things, you will make choices that will benefit both your present self and future self.

A.Start a conversation between the selves.
B.What will your future self thank you for?
C.We often put feeling happy to the future us.
D.Learn to communicate with others through letters.
E.What impression did you leave on those around you?
F.This can make what you do today for the future more worthwhile.
G.As a result, we are left without enjoyment of the moment in front of us.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了如何找到春季流行趋势的方法。

2 . How To Find Spring Fashion Trends

Fashion changes faster than most people can keep up with.     1    . Keep yourself at the forefront by paying attention to designers and social media, shopping early and knowing the basics of spring fashion.

Look through fashion magazines to get fashion ideas. Magazines like GQ, Vogue, and Cosmo are generally considered “taste makers”.     2    , and often bring excellent runway shows together. To keep ahead, make notes about the fashion trends that keep popping up in different magazines.

Find your favorite fashion blogs. What’s on the catwalk isn’t necessarily what’s on the streets, so I also like getting inspiration from travel blogs, fashion blogs, and smaller designers. Many brands, designers, and fashionistas post their inspiration online, as well as recommendations on where to find the best new fashions.    3    .

Explore social media. More and more often, people are using the Internet to broadcast their personal fashion recommendations, which is a great way to get a pulse on spring fashion. Sites like Tumblr and Pintrest have specific sections devoted to fashion.

4    . If you’ve got friends in Miami, they will experience spring fashion a lot faster than you might in the cold Chicago. Check out your friends’ pictures or go online and look up southern fashion blogs to get ahead of the game before the snow melts.

Make your own spring trends. Having confidence in yourself and rocking your outfit is more important than following any trend. Sometimes you still can’t figure out what spring fashion trend to follow.     5    . Trends aren’t as exaggerated as they used to be because people are more into developing their own personal styles, which is more permanent and empowering.

A.Make notes of fashions you see often
B.Look to warmer areas for inspiration
C.They are selling the right clothes for the right season
D.Find an outfit you like and make up your own trend
E.They are in touch with the big clothing designers
F.Spring is often when people launch new and inventive fashion for the warming weather
G.Search “Spring Fashion Blogs” and browse through a few to see styles you enjoy

3 . How to have an attractive personality

Demonstrating an attractive personality is key to making friends and having lasting relationships. These traits (特性) give you the ability to inspire and fascinate others, making others more drawn to you as a result.

Listen to others.     1     Instead of responding to a text, opening an email, or thinking about your next meal, pay attention to what the other person is saying. Show them you’re listening and interested by commenting on the story or asking questions.

Speak sincerely. No one likes to be cheated.     2     If you can’t commit to something, it’s better to be honest about it than to have to tell them at the last minute that you can’t make it. When people ask for your opinion, you should be honest.

3     You should always say what you believe in, be willing to take risks, and have the ability to admit your mistake without being worried about what other people will think. Doing this shows that you have self-confidence. This helps create an attractive personality.

Know “how” vs “what”. How you say things is arguably more important than what you say. If you try to give someone a genuine compliment, but he or she thinks you say it with a sarcastic undertone, your compliment won’t mean a thing.     4     If you notice that people often take things you say the wrong way, there’s a good chance you can change how you speak. Ask your friends to make you aware of the way you’re coming across.

Show enthusiasm for everything. Even if something makes you slightly uncomfortable, handle it with a smile on your face, an open mind, and a sense of humor. Not every day is going to be perfect, but being enthusiastic can help you accomplish anything.     5

A.Tell people the truth.
B.You may make things bad.
C.Be aware of the way you speak.
D.Have confidence in how you speak and act.
E.When you act this way, people will love being around you.
F.Asking questions is important when it comes to confidence.
G.Listening is a trait that is often forgotten in today’s society.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。和睦的邻里关系是人们幸福生活的一个重要方面。文章主要介绍了当有人乔迁新居时,我们该如何与新邻居相处。

5 . Many people changed residences and are eager to get familiar with their new neighbors. Here’s a quick refresher on making the most of neighborhood relationships.

Begin at the beginning. Building good neighborly relationships starts when you or someone else moves into the area. If a new neighbor moves in, be proactive (主动的) and welcome them to the neighborhood.     1    . Consider taking a plate of cookies or a small housewarming gift. Share your contact information and offer to answer any questions they may have about the community, including your favorite restaurants or the best local service providers.

2    . Don’t create things that are unpleasant to look at or allow your property’s condition to affect the value of neighboring homes adversely (不利地). Being kind to those around you includes keeping your yard tidy, removing snow from your sidewalks, and collecting trash and recycling bins after the truck has passed.

Be inclusive. If you are hosting a large party, consider extending invitations to your neighbors. During the holiday season, remember the people next door with a card, a homemade goodie, or an offer of assistance. Give without expectations.     3    .

Allow people to be human.     4    , and it’s impossible to know what others are going through. Don’t be too quick to assume a sligh (轻蔑) is personal or intended.

Accept it. If you have tried your best to resolve a conflict without success, let it go. Sadly, some people won’t like you whatever you do. And you aren’t going to enjoy some people.     5    . Be pleasant anyway, and be thankful that you get to live your life and they get to live theirs.

B.Be the first to stop by and say hello
C.It’s easier to accept it and move on
D.Everyone has a bad day now and then

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者发现处理剩菜可以是一种乐趣,而不是一件苦差事。

6 . “Leftover roast potatoes? There’s no such thing!” shouted people on social media when I shared a suggestion for using up remaining potatoes. This response is common whenever I propose ideas for ingredients (食材) considered “delicious” or a treat: wine, Easter eggs and cream. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and all that—but the way we handle leftovers has to change. Because of my work creating recipes, I am constantly dealing with leftover food. I live alone, work from home and enjoy the challenge of transforming leftovers into new culinary delights.

During lockdown, I witnessed in people a growing understanding of having to make do with what was already in the cupboards, fridge and freezer. This led to an increasing confidence around making substitutions and understanding food-safety issues (such as the difference between “best before” and “use by”). I learned everything I know about food safety during my professional life.

While sharing food with neighbors, friends and the wider community is one way to deal with remaining ingredients, managing random bits and open packets requires a different approach. So in May 2022, I started a series on social media called Rollover Leftovers, showcasing daily short videos of my home cooking. Simple concepts such as refreshing rock-hard bread, freezing leftover chips or creating a “clear out the fridge” tray bake gained millions of views — a much bigger audience than I would expect for anything using tricky methods or fancy ingredients.

Use your imagination and trust yourself, and you’ll discover that leftovers can be a joy, not a chore. And if you find you have the leftovers of a great big turkey but are fed up with the sight of it, or you have more cranberry sauce than you could possibly eat alone, why not try joining forces with neighbors or friends? Not so much bring a bottle as bring a loaf, because a post-Christmas leftovers sandwich is truly the best bite of the year. Isn’t it?

1. What do people think of the author’s suggestion for leftovers?
A.It is impractical.B.It is typical.C.It is valuable.D.It is irresponsible.
2. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?
A.The new trend in cooking.B.The concern about food safety.
C.The importance of professional life.D.The change of household appliances.
3. What can we learn about the series of Rollover Leftovers?
A.It teaches cooking principles.B.It is a community programme.
C.It focuses on fresh ingredients.D.It has gained great popularity.
4. What should people do with the remaining turkey according to the author?
A.Reserve it in a bottle.B.Share it with neighbors or friends.
C.Put it in the fridge for the next meal.D.Use it to make sandwiches for charity.

7 . For the sake of surviving in the world with challenges, we need to be wise.     1     Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with perspective when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations. Here are some strategies that we can use to get wiser.

Sometimes we ourselves need to be open to diverse perspectives.     2     Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them.     4

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是“周一综合征”以及解决方法。

8 . The most hated day of the week is misunderstood. When the Boomtown Rats, an Irish band, released   “I Don’t Like Mondays” in 1979, the song became an instant hit.

What many do recognise all too well is the difficulty of gathering the energy to get out of bed on Monday mornings in order to face the week ahead. Many bosses argue that starting off the week in person in the office creates good energy. However, plenty of employees beg to differ.

A paper published by the Journal of Applied Psychology, found that people tend to be more ill-mannered on Mondays, and grow more polite as the week unfolds. The authors have diagnosed a new condition, Mondayitis, which is defined. as “a systemic illness with collections of symptoms including tiredness, light-headedness, dry mouth and headache”. These symptoms typically appear on the first working day after a period off work, which could be a weekend or a longer holiday. They can lead sufferers to call in sick, decide to work from home or, if they do show up in the office, come across as detached (冷漠的) and unavailable. Mondayitis appears to be infecting other days of the week.

However, the covid-19 pandemic has led many people to re-evaluate their work-life balance. A lawyer in London who spends weekends working on cases likes to ease into the formal workweek with an elegant breakfast in a fancy restaurant. A broader movement is promoting the idea of a four-day work week, one arrangement of which would make Monday part of the weekend. Less ambitiously, and more realistically, asocial-media campaign for   “bare-minimum Mondays” argues for a gentle start to the week.

You may have prepared or merely enjoyed a more elaborate meal than a sandwich. You may have gone for a walk in the park or simply lay in bed. Either way, you almost certainly cleared your head. When revived and spirited, you will have a fresh start.

1. What does the underlined part “beg to differ” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Approve.B.Object.C.Submit.D.Complain.
2. What can we know about employees on Mondays in Paragraph 3?
A.They are ill-mannered but ready to help others.
B.They may suffer from tiredness or light-headedness.
C.They tend to infect others with their bad performance.
D.They want to come to the office rather than work from home.
3. What can we do to refresh ourselves on Mondays according to the author?
A.Start to work early.B.Grab a quick meal.
C.Take a walk in the park.D.Have a tight schedule.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last two paragraphs?
A.To tell us ways to tackle Mondayitis.B.To explain how to gain work-life balance.
C.To offer tips on how to keep fit on weekdays.D.To persuade us not to work too hard on Mondays.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些方法以帮助我们有效地管理情绪。

9 . Emotions play a crucial role in people’s lives. Being in tune with your emotions is a great thing, and it can lead to deeper connections. Nevertheless, when your emotions control you, they can seriously affect your ability to perform and to think clearly in crucial situations. You can’t get rid of your emotions completely.     1

Focus on your body, not your mind

What does your body feel like right now? Pay attention to the feeling of the clothes on your skin, and try to ignore any thoughts that you’re having.     2    . Then you can find inner peace.     3

If you feel yourself starting to get upset or angry, head to the bathroom and look in the mirror for a few minutes. As you do, focus on taking deep breaths and think about increasing yourself-compassion. After 2 to 3 minutes, you’ll probably feel your heart rate slowdown and your breathing get a little more even. It’s a good tool to use at work or out in pubic when things get a little overwhelming.

Distract yourself

Do something engaging that will keep your mind off your emotions.     4    . For example, do a puzzle, read a new book, try a word search, or do some art. The more you can keep your mind off things, the less you’ll focus on your emotions.

Worry about your own problems

5    . If you’re an empathetic person, listening to your friends or family members tell their issues will take a toll on you. It’s great to care about other people, but it’s also okay to set boundaries if you need to take some time for yourself.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何积极应对生活中的改变。

10 . Change can be hard. It means a lack of certainty and predictability.     1     Here are some tips to give your teen to help them cope with change in a healthy way.

2     Many times, our first response to change is to either deny it, fight it, or run away from it. Unfortunately, none of these strategies help us cope with change successfully. Most of the time we can’t control change, but we can control our response to it. Sometimes, simply saying “things are changing, and that’s OK” can make us feel better.

Control what you can.     3     Having some things that stay the same like walking the dog every evening after dinner reminds us that some things are still the same and allows our brain to rest. It can also help to plan whatever is still in our control or set goals for areas we want to see improve. Useful strategies can include focusing on the problem at hand, developing a plan for action, and asking for advice.

Identify your fears. Our imaginations can get the best of us sometimes, and we might exaggerate the problem. Honestly evaluate the change and consider what the worst case is. Determine what specifically is making you worried.     4

Talk about solutions more than feelings. One of the most common myths (谬见) of coping with unwanted changes is the idea that we can “work through” our anger, fears, and frustrations by talking about them a lot.     5     In fact, research shows that repeatedly broadcasting negative emotions can make us feel worse. As you talk about the change you are facing, make sure you are focusing on the problem and possible solutions, and avoid focusing solely on your feelings.

A.Take a fair attitude.
B.Acknowledge the change.
C.This isn’t always the case.
D.Look at the positives that will come out of the change.
E.It helps to have other areas of our life follow a predictable schedule.
F.You might realize that the worst case is not as bad as you imagined.
G.However, change is necessary for growth and it is normal to fear what we don’t know.
