4 . Alexa von Tobel, a successful entrepreneur(企业家), learned an important lesson during her time at Harvard University: Money alone doesn’t bring happiness. Despite achieving financial(财务的) success by selling her startup for millions of dollars, Alexa believes that true happiness comes from things that money can’t buy.
During her undergraduate studies in psychology, Alexa had the opportunity to study at Harvard’s Leadership and Happiness Laboratory, also known as the “Happiness Lab”. This experience gave her a new understanding on what truly brings happiness. She discovered that it’s the simple routines and daily actions that create a sense of community and connection, rather than material wealth.
Alexa’s mindset(思维模式) still influences her work. She believes that finding happiness is more important than just making money. Alexa thinks it’s important to take pride in the process of building a company, rather than only focus ing on the financial outcomes.
She applies this attitude to her personal life as well. Alexa and her husband value celebrating the journey rather than just the end results, even when it comes to raising their kids.
While at Harvard, Alexa was greatly inspired by Tal Ben-Shahar and Shawn Achor, who taught a popular course on “Positive Psychology”. This field emphasizes finding joy and satisfaction by connecting with others, being grateful, and having a positive mindset.
For Alexa, the lessons from her time at Harvard still remind her to focus on whatever brings her joy in her life, rather than obsessing over money or materials. “The daily effort drives happiness, not the outcome,” she says.

5 . When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

The medals don’t mean anything and the glory doesn’t last. It’s all about your happiness. The rewards are going to come but my happiness is just loving the sport and having fun performing.

Today I am going to share my experience that is related to the quote that I just read. It all started last year when the drawing competition took place. I really wanted to win it and get the trophy(奖杯)of the best artist, so I started working really hard on my weak points in drawing and I started to plan on how I could win the trophy. I spent so many hours working on it that the time flew really fast.
Finally the big day came. I was so excited but nervous at the same time. I just hoped my plans would work to make me good enough to win the trophy and the competition.
I went to the hall where we had to draw. I saw my best friend so I waved to her and she waved back. When the drawing competition started, I drew what I needed to draw in the place and I was feeling very confident that I would finally get the trophy of the best artist.
Then came the day when they called out the winner. I was so confident to get the prize that I didn’t even bother to hear who was getting it because I knew I would be the one to get it. Then I heard my friend’s name being called and this shocked me so much.
How could she get it and not me? I congratulated her and went home making sure nobody saw how sad I was. I was happy for my friend but I was very disappointed at the same time, so I did something that I usually do when I am sad or disappointed—read a book.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________“Would you say you are more of a scientist or an artist?” I commonly heard this question as I was preparing to start my neuroscience doctoral program, often after I told my teachers and classmates that I love writing poetry. I learned to respond, “A scientist” — not because it was necessarily true, but because I felt it would win me more respect. As an undergraduate, poetry had been a way for me to relax. But in grad school, I wanted to be seen as just as devoted to my work as those around me, who appeared completely undisturbed by nonscientific hobbies. So, I left my poetry by the wayside — but it wasn’t long before I felt a huge void (空虚) in my life.
By the second year of my Ph.D. , my paper project had become very boring and tiring and I was starting to burn out. One afternoon, a student mentioned the weekly event held by the university’s poetry club, of which she was a leader. After hearing how much I enjoyed poetry, she declared, “You should come!” A few days later, I sat in a crowded cafe, excited to be here and to be a part of it.
Through reading and writing poems, I rediscovered how to relax. However, I still worried about appearing less than fully dedicated to my science. So, when a senior grad student in my lab whispered, “I hear you love poetry!” I froze. My heart began to race. She went on to invite me to perform at our department’s art gala (联欢会). “By the way, Cheryl will be performing!” she added.
I was surprised to discover that Cheryl, our lab’s principal investigator, was a dancer. I excitedly sought her out, and we spoke for more than an hour about how science and art could intertwine (交织). She explained that my skill at picking up patterns in experimental results was the same one I used to create rhymes in my poems. With Cheryl as a model, I decided to perform at the gala, for once not feeling I had anything to hide.

9 . What you believe in has a magic way of shaping your reality. The concept of “you can become what you believe” is more than just a motivational quote. It’s a truth that stresses the remarkable influence of your mindset (心态) on your journey through life. At the heart of this idea lies the distinction between two fundamental mindsets: the growth mindset and the fixed mindset.
The growth mindset is a mindset that embraces the idea that abilities and intelligence can be developed through devotion, effort, learning, and perseverance. Those with a growth mindset grow better on challenges, viewing them as opportunities to learn and improve. Effort is seen as a path to mastery, and setbacks are viewed as stepping stones on the journey to success. Criticism is taken constructively as a chance to improve skills, and the success of others serves as inspiration and a blueprint for one’s own progress.
In contrast, the fixed mindset is characterized by the belief that your abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed characteristics that cannot be changed. People with a fixed mindset tend to avoid challenges, fearing that failure might reveal their limitations. They avoid pushing themselves because they see it as a sign of their weakness. Criticism is frequently interpreted as a personal attack, and envy or anger can be stirred up by others’ achievement. In nature, a fixed mindset limits individuals to their current abilities and limits their potential for growth.
The power of a growth mindset lies in its capacity to drive positive change. By believing in the potential for growth and improvement, individuals open themselves to a world of possibilities. “If you imagine less, less will be what you, undoubtedly deserve. Do what you love and don’t stop until you get what you love. Work as hard as you can, and think big, “Debbie Millman, a writer, designer, educator, artist and brand consultant said.

The wind howled (呼啸) with the terrible storm at night. The stars were stuck to the black sheet of the sky. The next morning, when I woke up, the winter’s icy wind caused me to shake
My friends and I agreed to take up the skiing contest. I took a seat near the heater, warming my hand and trying to calm myself before the skiing contest. I was encouraging myself by shouting, “I can win this contest.” As soon as I reached the white mountain top, I began wearing my safety guards for the climb down. We rhythmically recited “Ready-set-go” and the race began. At every moment my speed started to increase. Finally, winning was only one step away. As a wise man had once said, “With a determined heart, a mouse can also lift an elephant. So willpower and courage can help conquer (战胜) a hard task.” My hope helped me to conquer this challenging race. I was on top of the world by winning the skiing contest. Skiing has now become my hobby.
The next morning, it was snowing heavily. Watching this wonderful sight along with tasting the delicious hot chocolate, we friends were planning to go for an overnight climb to the top of the mountain. We came out of the hotel room and stepped into the deep snow which buried half our legs into the soft snowy ground. The best moment till now was looking up at the grand mountain. Also the view was clear. I was eager to start my climb. We climbed towards the top and all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell from the mountain. Fortunately I did not end up giving up my life but got a severe fracture (骨折) on my leg.
