Kindness is     1    type of behavior marked by acts of generosity, consideration, or concern for others, without     2     (expect) praise or reward.

Aristotle defined kindness     3     “helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself,     4     for that of the person helped”.

5    (base) on experiments at Yale University using games with babies, some studies concluded     6     kindness is native to human beings. Recently, Barbara Taylor and Adam Phillips     9    (stress) the element of necessary realism in adult kindness, as well as the way “real kindness changes people in the doing of it, often in unpredictable ways”.

2 . A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn’t have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.

She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity (逆境), even trauma (精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.

Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn’t mean we get through challenges uninjured. It’s been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.

However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.

1. What is Lisa like now when she fails?
A.She tries to cover it.
B.She is positive and adult.
C.She acts unconcerned.
D.She wants to make excuses.
2. What does the author intend to tell us through Lisa’s experience?
A.There is no sweet without sweat.
B.Experience is the father of wisdom.
C.Difficult situations are likely to make one stronger.
D.Responsibility is often more important than ability.
3. How does the author prove his view?
A.By analyzing existing data.
B.By quoting a psychologist.
C.By contrasting a person’s constant changes.
D.By giving examples together with study results.
4. Which of the following may the author agree with about post-traumatic growth?
A.It usually comes at a high price.
B.It produces little negative feelings.
C.It is one of the fastest ways to make improvements.
D.It is growth that does both good and harm.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章通过作者小时候学习舞蹈的经历,以及妈妈对她的支持和理解告诉父母们应该发现并培养孩子的天赋,而不是用所谓的教育把孩子推向平凡。

5 . When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood—all of them too young to walk—and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano. She began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very profitable occupation.

My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes (脚趾) I asked him why, and when he replied “ Because it is beautiful, ” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff (僵硬) and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.

My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not prevented. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and taking away from them any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.

1. What was the writer doing when her mother came home one day?
A.Teaching some babies to dance.B.Directing some babies to walk.
C.Getting some babies together.D.Making some babies sit still.
2. How did the writer find the ballet?
A.Old and unpopular.B.Ugly and unnatural.
C.Graceful and original.D.Dreamlike and gymnastic.
3. What did the writer think she owed her success in art to?
A.The ballet classes she had attended.B.Her inborn talent and great efforts.
C.The lucky chance her parents gave her.D.Her mother’s support and understanding.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Children should be encouraged to be educated as early as possible.
B.Children should be driven to develop their interest in art at an early age.
C.Parents should discover and develop their young children’s natural gift.
D.Parents should instruct their children to decide on a promising occupation.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.

So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.

To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.

Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.

7 . Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.

Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

1. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.
A.the meaning of success
B.the reasons for success
C.the standards of success
D.the importance of success
2. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ________.
A.work makes one feel pain
B.one tends to enjoy his work
C.it takes a lot of time to succeed
D.one gives up his work easily
3. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A.People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.
B.Successful people like to show their great skills.
C.People need to achieve success at the cost of life.
D.It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.
4. What is the main theme of the passage?
A.Having a goal is vital to success.
B.Being good is different from being great.
C.Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.
D.One cannot succeed without time and practice.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.

As was expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, “Er... What... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous(灿烂的) future?”

I was silent for a moment playing with the cell phone. I kept thinking, “Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?” later I replied, “Well, I want to be a writer.”

I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But surprisingly, “Interesting idea!” he answered. I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation.

“Are you serious, dad?”

“Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it’s late. Let’s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (螃蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more.”

Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off for the coast. We didn’t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.

There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. “Let’s see if we are lucky,” he said, picked up a web basket with a rope tied and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, “Give me a hand with this,” and we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck.

To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

9 . Several weeks ago, I pulled an old road map out of the glove box and passed it to my children. They had never seen the province of Ontario laid out like that before. They stared at the map, asking about all the towns, parks, and other landmarks we'd visited, and I pointed them out on the map.

Google Maps and GPS are modern wonders that have gotten me out of many confusing places, but paper maps still have a role to play in our lives. Most of us adults learned to read them out of necessity, but it's up to us to pass on that skill to children whose need may not be so obvious, but who still stand to benefit from it.

As Trevor Muir wrote in an article on this topic, "When kids learn how to create and use paper maps, they are doing more than just learning how to get around. They are actually developing fundamental skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Map skills still belong in today's classroom. "

As a child I had National Geographic maps taped to my bedroom walls. This aroused my curiosity and imagination about those places and thus made me eager to remember my geography and history lessons because they were tied to places I'd "seen". Even now as a mother of four, I've also spared time to travel to many of the countries whose maps I studied as a child.

Additionally, in this fast-changing world, unexpected events can rapidly influence one's usual way of life. When GPS satellites or Internet connections are affected, this old-fashioned skill can get you out of a mess without requiring a smartphone. Last but not least, paper maps arouse "big picture" thinking, showing kids that there's a much bigger world out there and helping to direct them within it.

So, now is a good time to pull out those dusty old maps and lay them on the kitchen table.

1. How did the children react when they were given the paper map?
A.They showed great curiosity.
B.They seemed totally confused.
C.They considered it old-fashioned.
D.They found it less convenient than GPS.
2. What might be the topic of the article written by Trevor Muir?
A.The teaching focus in today's classroom.
B.The situations where paper maps are used.
C.The necessity of digital maps in the modem world.
D.The benefit of developing paper map skills for kids.
3. Which of the following shows the author's opinion?
A.Internet connections are very reliable today.
B.GPS will sooner or later replace paper maps.
C.Paper maps provide kids with a grand vision.
D.Paper maps make people connected with each other.
4. What would be the best tide for the text?
A.Time to Teach Kids to Read Paper Maps.
B.How to Teach Kids about Different Kinds of Maps.
C.Time to Encourage Kids to Step into a Bigger World.
D.How to Teach Kids Fundamental Skills with Paper Maps.
