With her eyes always feeling tired as she prepared for an exam, 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6. (A)”A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that took effect (生效) on March 1, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point (小五号).
Teachers should also avoid using projectors (投影仪) or other multimedia equipment (多媒体设备) that are too bright.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. (B) For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.
Blue light is bad for our eyes, as (C) it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic devices (电子设备), including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.

5 . It is 8: 30 a. m. at the Chengdu Research Centre. Panda keepers are preparing milk for the baby pandas’ breakfast. At 9: 00 a. m. , they find that most of the babies are already awake and hungry. When the babies see the keepers, they run over to them with excitement and some of the young pandas even walk into their friends and fall over!
Lin Wei, one of the panda keepers, says, “They’re so cute and lovely. I take care of them like they’re my own babies. I wash, feed and play with them every day. They’re very special to me.” In fact, many people around the world love these black and white animals. Pandas have become so popular that they are now a symbol of China.
Scientists say there are now fewer than 2,000 pandas living in the forests. Another 300 or so live in zo0s or research centers in China and other countries. Pandas do not have many babies, maybe only one every two years. The babies often die from illnesses and do not live very long. Adult pandas spend more than 12 hours a day eating about 10 kilos of bamboo. Many years ago, there were a lot more bamboo forests and pandas in China, but then humans started to cut down these forests. As the forests get smaller and other human activities cause more problems, pandas cannot find enough to eat and they are having fewer babies.
An education program in Chengdu teaches children about pandas and other endangered wild animals. The Chinese government is trying hard to help save the pandas. Scientists are doing research to better understand the habits of pandas. We all hope that in the future there will be a lot more pandas.

Congratulations! You’ll enter a new high school. Are you ready for the future life? Here is some advice for a new senior high school student.
Be a positive(乐观的) person
Positive attitudes(态度) can make you full of energy. Do remember to encourage yourself when you’re down. You can keep your old friends close and make new friends with the students who make your life better and happier.
Make a plan
You might have more difficult courses but high school teachers won’t take care of you like in junior high. Mostly, you have to learn by yourself. Getting enough sleep and exercising more are both important. You need to manage your time wisely. You’d better make a time plan or a calendar can help.
Be responsible(负责的) for yourself
There is always someone smarter, richer or better looking than you. I hope that you only pay attention to your own work. Please find out your goals and make them clear. Then stick to your decisions and be responsible for the results.
Help other students
Not everyone is going to be nice to you. But you should give him a hand when you find someone is in trouble. Giving makes each other closer and makes you more popular.

When you are in your favorite clothing store, everything is so cheap and fashionable(时尚的) in your eyes! Even if you don’t need anything, you still leave the store with bags of new clothes.
This doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of other costs behind the low price. It’s clear that the fashion industry is terrible for the earth. It uses a lot of resources(资源) and pollutes the environment with waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable(可持续的) industries. We’ve all become our own waste managers, collecting fashion waste in our homes. It doesn’t just take up space but also ends up in landfills(垃圾场). Three out of every five pieces of clothing are sent to landfills. Luckily, second-hand clothing is becoming popular. It’s cheaper. More and more people choose to buy second-hand clothing. The value of the second-hand market may reach $80 billion(十亿) by 2029, an increase of 185% compared to the value at present.
In fact, there is still an even better choice. It’s not to shop at all. Making full use of what you have already had is the best choice of shopping.
