Wang, 31, is a professional mime from Beijing. He has been practicing the art for nine years and was named the best performer at the Wuzhen Theater Festival in 2017. He performs through body language instead of words.

According to Wang, miming sometimes can be very exaggerated(夸张的) that it looks like a cartoon, which is something the audience rarely (很少的) sees in normal performances. “Miming is a very free form of art for both the performers and the audience, ” he added,“ Whatever language you speak, you can understand it. It’s all about imagination and that’s the biggest attraction of miming.”

Mimes still have to have good acting skills, of course. “Everyone knows how to speak, but it requires years of training to make your body expressive,” Wang explained. To improve his performances, he has borrowed skills from other art forms like voice stunts(口技) and the audience interaction seen in clowning(扮小丑).

Nine years ago, when Wang graduated from the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy, he became interested in miming but couldn’t find a teacher to learn from. He explored on his own and later founded the Nadading Troupe(拿大顶剧社),which is said to be Beijing’s only mime troupe.
