4 . Step out of your door and what do you see? Ever since humans walked here and there on the Earth, we have been crazy about nature. And this gave birth to the subject called “natural history”.

It began with ancient scientists who looked at the diversity (多样性) of the natural world. Soon, more and more “naturalists”—those who study and practice natural history-were busy studying, collecting and naming the world’s animals, plants and so on. Observing (观察) skills are the key tools of a naturalist. They helped naturalists find out the secret of life on the Earth.

Today, natural history museums around the world offer people a place to think about natural history. But it has a long way to go.

In China, natural history as a field is developing quickly. Books and apps (应用程序) on plants and animals are very popular. Environmental protection groups and activities have all seen great growth during the past years. And behind it is China’s push to build an ecological civilization (生态文明).

Natural history is now seen as a kind of lifestyle. When you visit a natural history museum or just step out in the nature, you can enjoy the nature and learn about the secret of life at the same time. “Naturalist lifestyle” is good for the mind and the body.

We need naturalists now more than ever. The secret of life on the Earth is still incomplete, and the pieces are changing rapidly. So come on and discover your part!

5 . Our family went to the Yellow Stone National Park last summer vacation. Our son, Tom, wanted to see bears there. And what an experience it was!

After we got there, we put up our tent and began to travel around. As we returned, we heard our daughter Susie cry out. And then we saw a bear go into our camp.

Tom wanted his father to chase (驱赶) him away. His father said, “No, it’s dangerous to chase a bear. And don’t let him chase you.” Susie said, “What should we do? Maybe we should climb a tree.” Tom said, “No, we have to get him out of there. He might go to sleep in our tent.” “Maybe we could make him leave if we put some honey outside for him to eat.” Susie suggested. Then I said, “How are you going to get the honey? It’s in the tent.”

We watched the bear go into the tent and heard him turn everything upside down. “It’ll be foolish of us to try to chase him away,” said my husband. “Leave him alone and wait for him to come out.” We waited, but the bear stayed inside. We had to sleep in the car that night.

The class runs daily and it is a completely hands-on personal cooking experience, lasting up to 4 hours. You can learn 3~4 recipes (食谱) each lesson. The teacher will first show how to cook different recipes in front of you. And then he will guide you on how to prepare and make the food.

At the end of the class you can either eat the meal prepared during the class or take it home with you. What’s more, you’ll be able to take home the copies of all the recipes.

9 . Playing on the island on a hot summer day is a really unforgettable experience. Last summer I went to an island for our summer vacation with my family. There were so many fun and interesting things to do on the island, but my favorite was fishing. Every day, my mom, my dad, my younger brother Dave and I went to the beach. We took our little fishing boat with us. Mom didn’t like fishing, so she stayed on the beach and read a book.

One morning, while we were fishing, we heard a loud noise. “What was that?” I asked. “Oh, don’t worry, Joe. It might be a turtle (海龟) swimming under the boat,” said Dad, Dave and I looked around the boat, but we couldn’t see anything. Then we heard a different noise. “Look, Dad, there it is!” shouted Dave. It was a sea turtle and it couldn’t swim well. “Let’s go closer and see what’s wrong with it” Dad said.

When we got closer, we saw that there was a piece of plastic around the turtle’s legs. “Let’s help it,” I said. So Dad jumped into the water, swam to the turtle and brought it back to the boat. “There you go, little turtle; now you can swim to your family,” Dad said as he cut the plastic off. Then Dave and I put it back in the water. “I know! We should make a sign about not throwing rubbish into the sea, and put it in the sand on the beach,” I said, “If we don’t do anything to stop sea pollution, these sea animals will die.”

10 . Everything is made of something. Take away cloth, plastic, glass and the other materials (材料) from our lives and we are left nothing on our body. There are 5 basic materials: metal, glass, wood, cloth, plastic. Most things are made with these materials.

Let’s talk about metal first. Metal is very heavy. And it is very hard and strong. It usually feels cool if you touch it. We use it for knives. We use it for keys. We use it for cars. We use it for these things because it is very strong.

Next, let’s talk about glass. Glass is very smooth. It feels cool to touch. It is not as heavy as metal. It is hard, but it is not strong. It breaks very easily! Then why do we use it? We use it because it is transparent! You can see through glass! That’s why we use it for windows.

Now, let’s talk about wood. Wood is lighter than metal and glass. It is not as strong as metal. But it is much stronger than glass. Things made of wood are usually light, hard and strong. Chairs and tables are made of wood.

Now let’s talk about cloth. Cloth is very light. It is much lighter than wood. And it is very soft. We use cloth to make lots of things. For example, it is used to make clothing.

Last, let’s talk about plastic. Plastic is also very light. But it is different from cloth. Sometimes it is soft, and sometimes it is hard. Plastic can be used to make thin plastic bags. These are light, soft, and strong.

There are some other materials. But they are not used as much as these 5 materials.
