文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了布朗利兄弟在参加世界铁人三项系列赛的最后一站时,兄弟二人在比赛中的感人故事。

3 . It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With jus700 meters to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother Jonny, was in the lead. Alistair pushed himself towards the finish line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track Alistair had to choose -brotherly love, or a chance to win the race?

For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an unexpected end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother who had been rushed to the medical area.

The Brownlee brothers have been doing triathlons since they were children “Obviously, when your older brother is doing it, you think it’s a cool thing to do,’says Jonny. Alistair says that they encourage each other as much as they can where they train. Despite argument s over “stupid things” now and then, Alistair agrees than having a brother is an advantage. “Throughout my entire life, I’ve had my brother trying to beat me at everything I do. It has been a fantastic driving force.”

Watched by millions, the ending to the race has varied opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions? But for Alistair his decision was easy to explain: “Mum wouldn’t have been happy if I’d left Jonny behind.” At that moment, he was no longer an athlete aiming for a me dal - he was just a brother.

1. Why did Alistair get third place only?
A.Because he fell onto the track accidentally.
B.Because he was overtaken by another athlete.
C.Because he stopped to give his brother a hand.
D.Because he struggled with the burning heat.
2. What can be learnt from Paragraph 2?
A.It was difficult for Alistair to make the decision of helping his brother.
B.Alistair was only worried about his brother’s health condition.
C.The end result led to an unexpected discussion among the audience.
D.The media tried to prevent Alistair from going to the medical area.
3. What does Jonny regard his brother as?
A.An inspiration.B.An authority.
C.A burden.D.A follower.
4. How do people respond to Alistair’s behavior?
A.Unfavorably.B.Supportively.
C.Uninterestedly.D.Differently.
5. What message is conveyed in this passage?
A.Love and competition between the Brownlee brothers make them successful athletes.
B.For Alistair Brownlee, family love is more important than winning the triathlon final.
C.Triathlon is a kind of extreme sport which challenges human’s physical limit.
D.The public and media often have different opinions on social issues.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了作者对于极限运动危险性的认识。

4 . Even though people have been paralyzed (瘫痪的) playing sports like rugby and football, extreme sports take the whole ordeal (磨难) to the next level. Sports like downhill cycling are very dangerous because one would be going downhill, over rocky or dirt zone, through forests, even at potentially deadly speeds. A slip up could be your downfall.

Nobody who gets into extreme sports goes with the desire to do harm to themselves. With that, athletes train for years and years before they attempt anything extreme. To most people, extreme sports are extreme simply because they take more skill than what an average person has. An athlete with skill and training makes an extreme thing become a daily routine, which does not wipe out the danger, but greatly reduces it.

Even when there is a lot of skill involved, things might not go the athlete’s way, not at all. Luck and circumstances have a lot to do with how things develop, whether above 8,000 meters or in a wood, going downhill. In some places, crossing the street is an extreme sport, considering how wild traffic can get.

Some view parkour, the sports of running, jumping and climbing under, around and through buildings, as an extreme sport, while it is more of a life philosophy, where the athlete does not have to do anything remotely dangerous. Free soloing, which means climbing a rock or ice face without safety gear, is absolutely deadly, where one slip means almost certain death, depending on the height, of course. Skateboarding is relatively safe, but if you constantly find ridiculous places to practice on, like the fence of a bridge, then things can get very complicated. The extreme part depends on the athlete.

To summarize, yes, extreme sports are dangerous, but the danger depends on the athlete, their choice of sport, direction in which they take it, as well as the circumstances. Some things are out of our control, while others we can influence through exercise and healthier risk choices.

1. Why is downhill cycling mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To call for attention to extreme sports.B.To introduce the origin of extreme sports.
C.To illustrate the danger of extreme sports.D.To show the complexity of the extreme sports.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about regarding extreme sports?
A.Extreme sports differ from one another.
B.Skill matters a lot in maintaining safety.
C.Athlete’s luck is a key factor that influences safety.
D.Extreme sports are more dangerous than regular sports.
3. In Paragraph 4, several extreme sports are listed to ________.
A.explain danger depends on the athleteB.show free soloing is the most dangerous
C.compare which one involves the most skillD.demonstrate how to choose an extreme sport
4. Which would best describe the author’s attitude towards the danger of extreme sports?
A.Doubtful.B.Objective.C.Intolerant.D.Uninterested.
5. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A.Do Extreme Sports Test Your Courage?
B.Why Should Extreme Sports Be Banned?
C.Why Do We Love Extreme Sports So Much?
D.Are Extreme Sports Really That Dangerous?

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讲的是孩子们在参加体育比赛的时候输也是有意义的。

6 . If a child is playing sport, they should have fun. However, I believe learning that sometimes you lose is just as important.

There is a school of thought that if children are playing for fun, they should not keep score, which seems a bit backwards to me. Participation is great, but let’s also give them a goal to reach.

Sport has winners and losers, which is an important part of its make-up. I believe the greatest joy you can get from sport is when you play hard and produce a win, when you and your teammates work together for your goal.

I am a competitive person, but I don’t think you’re ever too young to start learning that putting effort into something can result in reward. I’m not saying winning should be the be-all and end-all of the experience for children, but it should at least be a choice.

Michael Jordan once said. “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Without learning how it feels to win, and just as importantly how it feels to lose, we will bring up children who expect life to be easy. Life is not easy and I believe the sooner children learn that, the better off they are in the long run. But, there does need to be a balance. There are parents who always want to see their children win and will punish them when they make mistakes.

I believe the key is to teach children that they should give their all in an effort to be victorious. It does need to be fun or they won’t be interested, but they should be graceful (优雅的) in failure. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is an example of someone who appears to have gone too far the other way, always in the news for his terrible attitude on court.

1. Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Fewer kids play sport nowadays.B.It is participation that matters most.
C.Competitive sport is important for kids.D.Kids often have unrealistic goals in sport.
2. What does the author want to show by using Jordan’s words?
A.Life lies in sport.B.Nothing is impossible.
C.Great hopes make great men.D.Failure is the mother of success.
3. What will winning and losing in sport teach children?
A.The difficulty of life.B.The role of hard work.
C.The power of teamwork.D.The need for dreaming big.
4. What does the author think of Nick Kyrgios?
A.He is not skilled.B.He is not graceful.
C.He sets a good example for kids.D.He pays little attention to success.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要是讲影响一个运动员的成长的因素有三个——力量、健康和耐力。

8 . A world-champion body builder has no more muscles than does a 90-pound person who is physically weak. So what makes him so strong? What other qualities does he need?

Muscles are made of thousands of stringy fibers-a number that is fixed during childhood-which contract(收缩)when doing work. Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract at the same time.

Exercise actually damages the muscles. During the recovery stage, the muscle fibers increase in size. Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time. If a muscle is weak or untrained, for example, only 10 percent of its fibers will contract, whereas up to 90 percent of the fibers in a weight lifter's biceps(二头肌)will contract.

Aside from the strength, two other factors go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance. Fitness is related to the condition of the heart. During exercises, there is an increase in the amount of blood returning to the heart from the muscles. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minute, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial(运动测试). This greater volume means more work for the heart-a muscular balloon that expands and contract is to take in blood and push it out. Like any other muscle, the heart enlarges and gets stronger with routine exercise.

Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel-in this case sugar-the muscles can store. A muscle that is continually exercised until it runs out of sugar tends to store more when it refuels at the next meal. And more sugar can translate into greater endurance the next time the muscle is put to the test.

1. What determines the strength of a world-champion body builder?
A.The thickness of fibers and the number of those contracting contemporarily.
B.The number of fibers and the amount of exercise he does at the same time.
C.The function of fibers and their thickness.
D.The function of fibers and their recovery.
2. What effect does exercise have on muscle fibers according to the passage?
A.It helps fibers more easily to contract.
B.It makes fibers increase quickly in size.
C.It makes more fibers weak or untrained.
D.It helps more fibers to work at one time.
3. What does the author mean by saying “this greater volume means more work for the heart”?
A.The heart bears the task of making more blood during a vigorous trial.
B.The heart needs to bear the fast heart beating during a vigorous trial.
C.The heart takes in more blood and pushes it out during a vigorous trial.
D.The heart enlarges and becomes stronger routinely during a vigorous trial.
4. What could be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The more sugar muscles store, the thicker the fibers in them become.
B.The more sugar a muscle consumes, the less it tends to store next time.
C.The more sugar the muscles of an athlete store, the longer time they can work.
D.The amount of sugar in muscles largely depends on when they refuel at the nest meal.
5. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Strong Heart and World-championB.Strength, Fitness and Endurance
C.Body Building and MusclesD.Resources of Strength

10 . Kayaking(皮划艇) is an activity enjoyed by many people of all ages. It requires little or no experience and nearly anyone of any skill level can participate. It’s most popular as a summertime sport, but it is also a great activity during the winter. Kayaking also seems relatively friendly to the environment, more so than speed boating or water skiing. Because a kayak doesn’t create large or frequent waves, require fuel, or let off polluted air, it is indeed a fairly safe activity for humans and wildlife alike.

Kayaking on freshwater lakes and streams creates little turbulence and therefore does not disturb fish or other aquatic life. Actually, the gentle paddling and movement of the kayak helps to bring seaweed to the surface, making for convenient snacking to the fish. However, there is a drawback to the all-you-can-buffet for your fishy friends. In addition to bringing food to the surface, kayaking also stirs up litter that’s been hiding beneath the waters. Some aquatic animals will mistake it for food. This could cause the animals to choke on the indigestible litter, leading to death. As hazardous as this sounds, it isn’t very likely for such an event to take place. Most litter in lakes and streams is found along the shoreline and settles in the sand and dirt, and isn’t likely to drift away to the main body of water. Unlike boats operated by motor and fuel, kayaks pose little or no harm to the fish swimming beneath. And because kayaks do not have a motor, fish have no risk of getting caught underneath the boat.

One potential hazard that results from kayaking is human waste. This depends solely on where you plan to kayak, and if there are resources available (such as campsites) along the shoreline. When there are no facilities in sight, you’re paddling in the middle of a lake, and nature calls, then often you are given no choice but to expel your waste in the middle of the water. While human waste is considered biodegradable, it can be harmful when swallowed by fish. The only preventative measure is to avoid using the water as a restroom. Some public lakes and streams have taken steps to preserve the quality of the water by requiring permits for kayaking. This won’t ease the human waste problem, but does help regulate entry into the lake and prevent it from becoming overcrowded.

An important factor to remember when kayaking is that you are a guest in someone else’s home. You may not be greeted by anyone or be able to kick up your feet and watch TV, but the water is home to many aquatic animals and wildlife. Just as you would not throw trash on the floor or destroy the home of another, you shouldn’t do it outdoors either. Keep all trash with you in your kayak and properly dispose of it after you return to shore. By doing your part, you will help keep kayaking a safe and enjoyable activity for yourself and the environment.

1. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Kayaking according to the passage?
A.Young people’s enjoyment of kayaking exceeds that of other people.
B.Water skiing has more negative effects on the environment than Kayaking.
C.Usually, kayaking is only practiced in the summer.
D.Whether you can kayak depends on resources available along the shoreline.
2. What does “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Providing aquatic animals with an all-you-can-buffet.
B.Stirring up litter to the surface of the water.
C.That aquatic animals choke to death because of eating the litter.
D.That most litter in lakes and streams is found along the shoreline and settles.
3. Which word or expression is closest in meaning to “biodegradable”?
A.Recycled.B.Environmentally harmless.C.Poisonous.D.Sustainable.

A.preserving the quality of the water thereB.stopping the waters from becoming too crowded
