3 . A new study published in "Annals of Behavioral Medicine" shows that three continuous nights of sleep loss cause great damage to your mental and physical well-being.

Soomi Lee, assistant professor in the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida, found the biggest jump in symptoms appeared after just one night of sleep loss. The number of mental and physical problems steadily got worse, peaking on day three. At that point, research shows the human body got relatively used to repeated sleep loss. But that all changed on day six, when participants reported that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst.

"Many of us think that we can pay our sleep debt on weekends and be more productive on weekdays," Lee said. "However, results froth this study show that having just one night of sleep loss can significantly impair your daily functioning."

Data provided by the Midlife in the United States study included nearly 2, 000 middle-aged adults who were relatively healthy and well-educated. Among them, 42% had at least one night of sleep loss, sleeping 1%fewer hours than their typical routines. They recorded their mental and physical behaviors in a diary for eight consecutive days, allowing researchers to review how sleep loss causes wear and tear on the body.

Participants reported a pile-up of angry, nervous, lonely, irritable and frustrated feelings as a result of sleep loss. They also experienced more physical symptoms, such as upper respiratory(呼吸道)issues, aches, gastrointestinal(肠胃的)problems and other health concerns. These negative feelings and symptoms were continuously elevated throughout consecutive(连续的)sleep loss days and didn't return to baseline levels unless they had a night sleep of more than six hours.

About one-third of U.S. adults sleep less than six hours per night. Lee says once that becomes a habit, it's increasingly difficult for your body to fully recover from lack of sleep, continuing the vicious(恶性的)cycle of worsening daily well-being, which could impact one professionally. A previous study led by Lee found losing just 16 minutes of sleep could impact job performance. Her previous findings also show that minor sleep loss can decrease daily mindfulness, which is a critical recourse for managing stress and maintaining healthy routines.

Lee says the best way to maintain a strong daily performance is to set aside more than six hours to sleep every night.

4 . In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.

His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.

This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.

Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Bissell was an English teacher.
B.Bissell left Uzbekistan heartbroken.
C.Bissell returned to Uzbekistan to find a new job.
D.Bissell came back due to the attraction of Uzbekistan.
2. Which word can replace the word "hence" in Paragraph 2?
A.Besides.B.Instead.
C.Therefore.D.Otherwise.
3. Which of the following word can be the best description of Bissell?
A.Humorous.B.Adventurous.
C.Ambitious.D.Brave.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A diary.B.A guide book.
C.A novel.D.A magazine.

5 . When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline(座机)?

These days you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn't own a mobile phone. In fact, plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.

Still, 55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones, according to a survey(调查). Of those Australians who still have a landline, a third concede that it's not really necessary and they're keeping it as a security blanket-19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies. I think my home falls into that category.

More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone. Age is naturally a factor(因素)-only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who've perhaps had the same home number for 50 years. Age isn't the only factor; I'd say it's also to do with the makeup of your household.

Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than provide a mobile phone for every family member. That said, to be honest, the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents, to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).

How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries?

1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobile phones?
A.Their various uses.B.Their major markets.
C.Their broad popularity.D.Their unique structure.
2. What does the underlined word "concede" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Feedback.B.Acknowledge.
C.Discuss.D.Perceive.
3. What can we say about Baby Boomers?
A.They continue to use landline phones.
B.They enjoy meeting the users' needs.
C.They prefer playing smartphone games.
D.They are reluctant to part with families.
4. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A.It's a long way to go for landline.
B.Landline plays a great role in our life.
C.It may cost many daily expenses in the future.
D.It will fall into disuse some day.

9 . A small Alaska village has experienced a wonderful period in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.

More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat (栖息地)of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in 1995. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight (困境)of polar bears about ten years ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.

The village had fewer than 50 visitors every year before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Today we're talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year," Reed said. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said they have been offering polar bear tours since 2004. Most of his clients (客户)are from China and Europe, as well as from the lower 48 U. S. states. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.

1. Why do more polar bears tend to stay on land in Kaktovik?
A.Because of food shortage.B.Because of climate change.
C.Because of habitats movement.D.Because of their preference for land.
2. When did people begin to notice polar bears stay on land?
A.In 1995.B.In 2004.C.In 2011.D.In 2018.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Hotels in Kaktovik are not enough.
B.Tourism affects the beauty of nature.
C.Kaktovik has less than 50 visitors per year.
D.Inglangasak makes a living as a tour guide.
4. What conclusion can we make according to the text?
A.Nothing is impossible.
B.Every coin has two sides.
C.Where there is life, there is hope.
D.All things in their being are good for something.

10 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Just only fifteen years     1     (early), getting from one city to another left travelers with very few choices. And now all of that     2     (change)a lot.

Take taking a trip from Shanghai to Beijing as an example. For those under the pressures of the clock,     3     quickest and most convenient mode of travel would be the plane. New airports have sprung up in every major province,     4     (open) up ways to go to areas of China,     5     are left unexplored by previous (先前的)foreign travels.

But if the price of planes is a bit high     6     if the fear of heights gets you down, taking a bullet train (动车)is a great way. The bullet railway is just     7     (hard) longer than the plane trip and watching city and countryside views from the window is an experience in     8     (it).

And the choices don't stop there. Why not take the wheel yourself? Nowadays car rental is easy and inexpensive. The newly paved roads are welcoming and GPS systems are just as advanced (先进)     9     any international area. Take to the back-roads and explore the different     10     (part)of the countryside, which have taken a great jump in living standards.
