We sometimes think we can take care of things on our own. However, sometimes we need to use the strength of our groups to get things done.

Ray Drake knew this better than anyone, because he was moved to tears when he understood how good it was to have good neighbors when he needed them.

In 1989, Drake lost the use of his legs. The Iowan man did have family, though. His two older sisters were there to help him get his life back on track and deal with his new situation. The plan worked for years, and their love helped him through hard times.

In August 2020, a strong windstorm stopped everything in Iowa. There was terrible damage, and 40% of the crops in the state were lost. People lost their electricity. Businesses were a mess and homes were all broken. So many people had a hard time.

The storm caused Drake to have a specific trouble. There were broken trees all over his yard, and he couldn’t move them. His sisters were also too small to clean up the trees. The three people really needed help.

After about a week, Drake’s sisters decided to ask for help because the power lines were still down and people were still trying to get their lives back together. They called some of their brother’s old high school friends to see if anyone had a chainsaw (链锯) they could bring over to start cutting up the fallen trees.

Doug Applegate, a friend, looked at the damage and realized that just a chainsaw wouldn’t be enough to clear the fallen trees from Drake’s yard and that the family would need more. He made a call for help in the area to see if anyone there could give a helping hand.

When I was 11, I quite wanted a bicycle-not any bicycle, but a blue bicycle from Jihnston’s store on the Hill, a smal   shopping area that was six blocks away from the our house.

The Monday before Christmas, my 9-yea r old Steve and I ran to the Hill to do our Christmas shopping. Past the ice- cream shop and the pet store, we entered the five-and dime store. My brother had his savings (65cents) held in his hand, and I had four dollars, some of which I had got by cleaning the neighbor’s yard. At the store, I picked out writing paper for our sister, a pair of earrings for our mom, and   notebook for our 45-year-old since he would be going to college to get a Ph, D. I had enough money left to buy basball cards for Steve.

We went home by way of the bike store, so I could look at my bike. It wasn’t my bike actually, but I was saving money to buy it. I wanted it more than anything else in the world. It was a blue Italian model; I had never seen another one like it. I planned to ride it to school. However, to my shock, the blue bike had been sold. It seemed like my heart stopped and time stood still. For three months, ever since the first day I saw it, I had been saving money to buy it. I ran from the store, fighting back tears.

On the way home, I thought I no longer needed the 12 dollars I had saved. I started to think what I should buy with it.

Back home, when I put my package presents under the tree, I noticed other packages which had been palced by Steve, my sister and my parents.

After dinner, Dad told us that he would go to college and that our family would have a tight (紧的) budget. And he felt sorry for that. Suddenly, I knwe what I would use my 12 dollars for. I ran to my room, and wrote on a card, “Dear Dad, this is for your education.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了ChatGPT背后的软件引擎生成式人工智能(Generative ai),新技术的广泛采用将改变工业,人工智能的广泛采用主要受人为因素的影响。

5 . Generative A.I., the software engine behind ChatGPT, is seen as an exciting new wave of technology. But companies in every industry are mainly trying out the technology and thinking through the economics. Widespread use of it at many companies could be years away.

Generative A.I., according to forecasts, could sharply boost productivity and add trillions of dollars to the global economy. Yet the lesson of history, from steam power to the Internet, is that there is a long lag between the arrival of major new technology and its broad adoption — which is what transforms industries and helps fuel the economy.

The investment craze is going on right now. In the first half of 2023, funding for generative A.I. start-ups reached $15.3 billion, nearly three times the total for last year. Company technology managers are sampling generative A.I. software from a host of suppliers and watching to see how the industry develops.

In November, when ChatGPT was made available to the public, it was a “Netscape moment” for generative A.I., said Rob Thomas, IBM’s chief commercial officer, referring to Netscape’s introduction of the browser in 1994. “That brought the Internet alive,” Mr. Thomas said. But it was just a beginning, opening a door to new business opportunities that it took years to create.

In a recent report, a timeline for the widespread adoption of generative A.I. application was presented. It assumed steady improvement in currently known technology, but not future break-throughs. Its forecast for main-stream adoption was neither short nor precise, a range of 8 to 27 years. The broad range is explained by plugging in different assumptions about economic cycles, government regulation, company cultures and management decisions. “We’re not modeling the laws of physics here; we’re modeling economics and societies, and people and companies,” said Michael Chui, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute. “What happens is largely the result of human choices.”

1. How are the companies reacting after the introduction of generative A.I.?
A.Adopting the new technology widely.B.Making a high profit from the technology.
C.Staying cautious about the new technology.D.Postponing generative A.I.’s wide adoption.
2. What will transform industries?
A.The arrival of major new technology.B.The broad adoption of new technology.
C.The lag between the major technologies.D.The invention of steam power in history.
3. What is the purpose of writing paragraph 4?
A.To show the Internet came alive in the 1990s.
B.To mention A.I. has brought important benefits.
C.To explain the present situation is just a beginning.
D.To prove the new business opportunities are enormous.
4. What do we learn about the wide adoption of generative A.I.?
A.It needs steady improvement instead of break-throughs.
B.It should model the laws of physics and economics.
C.It will be widely adopted in over 3 decades.
D.It is influenced mostly by human factors.

The medals don’t mean anything and the glory doesn’t last. It’s all about your happiness. The rewards are going to come but my happiness is just loving the sport and having fun performing.

—Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Today I am going to share my experience that is related to the quote that I just read. It all started last year when the drawing competition took place. I really wanted to win it and get the trophy(奖杯)of the best artist, so I started working really hard on my weak points in drawing and I started to plan on how I could win the trophy. I spent so many hours working on it that the time flew really fast.

Finally the big day came. I was so excited but nervous at the same time. I just hoped my plans would work to make me good enough to win the trophy and the competition.

I went to the hall where we had to draw. I saw my best friend so I waved to her and she waved back. When the drawing competition started, I drew what I needed to draw in the place and I was feeling very confident that I would finally get the trophy of the best artist.

Then came the day when they called out the winner. I was so confident to get the prize that I didn’t even bother to hear who was getting it because I knew I would be the one to get it. Then I heard my friend’s name being called and this shocked me so much.

How could she get it and not me? I congratulated her and went home making sure nobody saw how sad I was. I was happy for my friend but I was very disappointed at the same time, so I did something that I usually do when I am sad or disappointed—read a book.

George was a student in my class, a boy of few words. As his teacher, I had noticed his shyness and had been trying to create opportunities for him to integrate into the group of his classmates. However, my efforts had resulted in little success.

It wasn’t until later that I learned the reason behind George’s reserved behaviour. His parents had recently moved to the city, and the transition had left him feeling lonely.

The school had announced an upcoming cross-country race, with the first prize being an Iron Man toy. George’s eyes lit up with excitement when he heard the news, and from that moment on, he was on a mission to win that toy.

It was evident that George held a deep affection for Iron Man. He trained hard, running laps around the school field every day after class. His determination was unwavering, and his commitment to the race was fueled by his desire to claim the Iron Man toy as his own.

As the day of the race drew nearer, George’s anticipation grew. He was eager to compete, not just for the thrill of the race but for the chance to win the symbol of his childhood happiness. Iron Man represented the joyful memories of his early years and the courage to face challenges head-on.

However, despite his dedicated efforts, George fell short of winning the first prize in the race. He returned to the school grounds with a heavy heart, disappointment written all over his face. I approached him, offering a comforting smile and words of encouragement.

“George, winning isn’t everything,” I told him. “Sometimes, the journey itself teaches us valuable lessons.”

George confided (倾诉) in me, sharing his deep longing for the Iron Man toy. He revealed that he had owned an Iron Man toy as a child, but it had been lost over the years. To him, Iron Man symbolized not only his most cherished possession, but also a connection to a happier time in his life, a time filled with the courage to face challenges.

文章大意:本文是说明文。本文介绍了国际自然保护联盟对濒危物种的判断标准,并阐明了导致物种濒危最常见的原因。

9 . Over 7,000 species around the world are considered endangered. That number doesn’t even include the plants, animals, and other lifeforms that are listed by some scientists as vulnerable, critically endangered, or extinct in the wild.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the most-comprehensive list of endangered species around the world. The Red List of Threatened Species, as it’s called, judges each species on five different standards for an in-depth scientific approach. According to the IUCN, an endangered species is one that meets any one of the following criteria (标准): a 50%-70% population decrease over 10 years, a total geographic area less than 5,000 square kilometers, a population size less than 2,500 adults, a restricted population of 250 adults, or a statistical prediction that it will go extinct within the next 20 years.

Though the IUCN’s Red List covers a wide range of what qualifies as an endangered species, it doesn’t quite say how a species reaches those low points. Prepare to feel guilty: the most common factor when it comes to species decline is human intervention. Loss of habitat, the introduction of a foreign species into the environment, hunting, pollution, disease, and loss of genetic variation (基因变异) are all causes of species decline and most often are a result of human activities. Take the bald eagle for example: the rise in human population and urban development of North America limited the animal’s habitat; an increase in hunting the eagles for sport lowered their population size; and the use of the pesticide DDT on farms harmed the animal’s reproductive capabilities.

But even though humans are the number one cause of species decline, classifying species as endangered encourages action to reverse the effects of human intervention. Conservation efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service criminalized (使非法) the hunting of bald eagles and the use of the pesticide DDT in the mid- to late 20th century. The effect was positive, as bald eagles have been on the rise and were taken off the endangered species list in 1995.

1. Which of the following species can be considered endangered?
A.One that will go extinct within the next 50 years.
B.One whose population size is less than 5,000 adults.
C.One whose habitat is less than 2,500 square kilometers.
D.One whose population decreases 20% over twenty years.
2. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A.The causes of species decline.
B.The disadvantages of the pesticide.
C.A list of worldwide endangered species.
D.Common features of endangered species.
3. Why is the bald eagle mentioned as an example in the last paragraph?
A.To show its rareness.
B.To blame humans for its decline.
C.To stress its importance in nature.
D.To show the meaning of ranking it endangered.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment.B.Health.C.Science.D.Education.
