5 . I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had             died “full of years”, as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence (吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故的) woman said to me, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow , she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son of the other             deceased woman said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on my mother’s going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It’s my fault that she’s dead.”
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out badly, they believe that the opposite course — keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation — would have turned out better.             After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing need to believe that __________ the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling             may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people             feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.
1. The author had to hold the two women’s funerals probably because .
A.he wanted to comfort the two familiesB.he was an official from the community
C.he had great pity for the deceasedD.he was priest of the local church
2. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because .
A.they couldn’t find a better way to express their sorrow
B.they believe that they were responsible
C.they had neglected the natural course of events
D.they didn’t know things often turn out in the opposite direction
3. According to the passage, the underlined part in paragraph 4 probably means that .
A.everything in the world is predetermined
B.the world can be interpreted in different ways
C.there’s an explanation for everything in the world
D.we have to be sensible in order to understand the world
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Life and death is an unsolved mystery.
B.Every story should have a happy ending.
C.Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault.
D.In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away .

7 . There is a growing number of kidults---or adults who wear the mask of maturity but prefer to pander(迎合) to their inner child.
They feel ill equipped for parenthood, because they don’t see what values or lessons they could honestly pass on to their young, besides self-centeredness and a passion for the good things in life. They are trying to live by not acting their age.
As Ms Jane put it in her letter: I’m married, in my late 20s and enjoy a lifestyle other married graduate couples enjoy: winning and dining, tasteful clothes, travel and a career. Why give up all these for a baby?
It is reported that when asked whether they were adults, most people in their 20s answered they were not sure. This reflected a global economy in which people chased more papers to get better jobs that would comfortably support middle class living.
Being a kidult is not all about being selfish, though. With the untold uncertainties of war, fluctuating(波动)markets, disease and terrorism, many see this world as a poor place to live in—let alone bring kids up in. This seems especially so in urban living. All anyone wants after a long, hard day at work is some peace and quiet.
My classmate, Jenny, mused(沉思)recently how our friends living in small Malaysian towns were onto their second or third kids. Maybe they just loved having children around. Or maybe, in their own way, they wanted to leave the world a better place than they found it.
That’s how you, I and everyone know we have the chance to breathe air, touch grass and see sky. I think out parents understand that just being alive is an experience worth passing on.
1. What is a kidult in the writer’s opinion?
A.A person who doesn’t have a child
B.An adult who actually has a psychology of a child
C.A child who doesn’t want to grow up
D.A person who doesn’t know that what values he has
2. What does the underlined word “paper” in Para. 4 mean?
A.money
B.reputation
C.qualification
D.power
3. The author explains the kidult phenomenon by ________.
A.presenting research findings
B.making comparison
C.showing her own experience
D.using examples
4. We can learn from the text that kidults________.
A.know little what they can pass on to their children
B.are sure of their abilities for good life
C.living in urban can enjoy more peace
D.living in small towns know well what they’re living for

9 . Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.
Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, _______________. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.
Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far
more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.
It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的) In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
1. . The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A.preparing a topic list first
B.focusing on one’s own mind
C.directing the talk to the desired results
D.experiencing the speaker’s inside world
2. . What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2 ?
A.How to listen well.
B.What to listen to.
C.Benefits of listening.
D.Problems in listening
3. According to the author , in communication people tend to ________.
A.listen actively
B.listen purposefully
C.set aside their prejudices
D.open up their inner mind
4. According to the author , the patients improved mainly because _______.
A.they were taken good care of.
B.they knew they were truly listened to.
C.they had partners to talk to.
D.they knew the roots of problems.

10 . Mistakes are a part of life. To err is human. Failure is also a part of life, not the end of life. Be happy facing life’s challenges. When you make the effort to be happy and to improve your life, you are actually rewarded along the way.

Life is like a game and maybe you can award (奖励) points for every effort that has been a success for you. Try it. Add ten points for every achievement. And when you have reached 50 points, just yell, “ Hey, I’ve won!” and give yourself a reward. If you happen to have missed your points for whatever reason, tell yourself, “Well, I tried!” which is better than not trying at all. Don’t let it be said you didn’t try.

What is it that you want to make yourself happy? Actually happiness means different things to different people. For example, an athlete will be happy winning his first race. For a new mother happiness would be seeing her baby’s first steps. Happiness for a poor person would mean having a meal just for today. So happiness for you is really something simple that you want for yourself.

It really doesn’t have to be big. As a matter of fact you should always have realistic expectations. Make the best out of every given situation. If you expect a certain result from a situation and it does not happen, don’t get despondent. This just means trying harder next time. We all have in us the power to succeed. Don’t let “ give up ” be a part of your vocabulary.

1. By saying “To err is human”, the author means that________.
A.human beings should try to avoid (避免) making mistakes
B.no one is perfect (完美的) and everyone makes mistakes
C.mistakes and failures make up our life
D.human beings make mistakes easily
2. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Try to reach 50 points.
B.Never stop trying in your life.
C.Award yourself for your success
D.Don’t be afraid of missing your points.
3. The author proves his idea in Paragraph 3 through_________.
A.examplesB.numbers
C.experimentsD.stories
4. The underlined word “ despondent ” in the last paragraph means________.
A.frightenedB.disappointed
C.surprisedD.excited
