1 . Older women who walk a little over three kilometers each day might live longer than less active women of the same age, a new study suggests.

Many Americans hoping to stay healthy set a daily goal of 10, 000 steps, or about eight kilometers. They often have this goal because they are wearing electronic devices which set that target, note researchers in the United States. Their findings appeared recently in the publication JAMA Internal Medicine.

But it is not clear how much intensity(强度)or speed matter when counting the health benefits of every step, the researchers write. They add that 10,000 steps per day might not be the right goal for everyone.

For the study, researchers observed 17,000 women, all in their early 70s. They asked the women to wear accelerometers for at least four days. Accelerometers are small devices that measure the number of steps and the intensity of movement. The researchers followed up with the women much later, around 4. 3 years later, on average. Since the beginning of the study, 504 women had died. Compared to women who took no more than 2, 718 steps daily, the women who took at least 4,363 steps per day were 41 percent less likely to die.

“Even a modest amount of steps is associated with lower death rates, "said I-Min Lee, the lead writer of a report on the study. "The rate of stepping did not matter in these older women: it was the number of steps that mattered.

The study had a few limitations. For example, the researchers only measured women’s movements once, at the start of the study period. It is possible that the women’s behaviors changed over time. Still, the results are "good news for older adults who may have difficulty walking at faster paces, "said Keith Diaz, a researcher at Columbia University. He was not involved in the study.

“Any walking is better than nothing, " Diaz said by email. "With even small amounts of walking, your risk of death will be sharply reduced "For those who have difficulty walking, other research shows that any form of aerobic activity provides health benefits," he added. "Swimming, bicycling or any form of activity that is continuous in nature will provide health benefits.

1    . If you are just starting out, avoid the following things to help you increase your chances of running success.

Doing too much too soon

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is doing too much too soon. Picking up a new hobby like running is no doubt exciting. Runners need to ease into the sport before increasing the distance.    2    .

    3

Beginners might think they need to run nearly every day to meet their fitness or weight-loss goals, but this couldn't be further from the truth.    4    , especially for beginners whose muscles and bones haven't yet been conditioned for such intense (剧烈的) exercise. So it's important to give your body ample rest between workouts. Follow a training plan that includes rest days.

Comparing yourself to others

5    , You're excited about running, so you are probably reading running blogs, magazines and message boards where you might start to feel inadequate about your own running pace. Instead of getting down on yourself, remember that every runner was once a beginner and use their success as motivation!

D.As mentioned, a healthy routine is what they attach importance to

3 . It has become one of the most moving pictures of the 2017 London Marathon: Matthew Rees stopping 300 metres short of the finish line to help DavidWyeth, a stranger on the verge of collapse, finish the race. "I was just about to sprint (冲刺) to the finish when I saw David," Rees tells me. "His legs were completely jelly-like and he collapsed (崩溃) in front of me. So I decided to forget my race. He had come so far and after 26 miles of running I wanted him to make the finish."

Rees, who was running his third marathon as part of the Swansea Harriers club, was having a hard race himself. "Earlier on, I suddenly experienced some leg problems and was in a lot of pain," he said. " I nearly dropped out but I decided I wanted to get to the finish line. When I saw David, he was clearly having the same thought. It felt like fate that we were meant to cross together." What did he say to him? " I was trying to cheer him on and keep him calm. I just kept on saying:‘ You will finish. I won't leave your side. We'll get to that finish line.'"

Rees only started running two years ago. "I wanted to get a bit fitter," he says, "and more importantly, it was for mental health reasons. I was suffering from anxiety and running really helps with that. It's changed my life."

The video of the two men crossing the finish line arm in arm immediately was viewed widely, though Rees failed to finish under two hours, 50 minutes, his goal for the race. Rees, with his modesty(谦逊), tells me that such acts of kindness happen frequently in the running community and it just so happened that his sportsmanship was caught on camera.

1. When Rees was about to complete the marathon, he found ______ .
A.he had to give up the race
B.David would run in front of him
C.something was wrong with David
D.he had a leg problem
2. We can infer from the last paragraph that ______ .
A.Rees was excited to be on camera
B.Rees became interested in running
C.Rees was sad because of his failure
D.Rees did not think much of what he did
3. What is the writer's main purpose of writing the text? ______
A.To share a touching story in a Marathon.
B.To show the meaning of running a Marathon.
C.To explain how to become a good sportsman.
D.To describe the friendship between two runners.

4 . The Greatest show on Earth

The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sports in the world. Every four years, many countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honour in sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honour, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is in the spirit of the Olympics—to take part is what matters.

The Olympic Games always start in a bright colour and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first, for it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held—the host country—marches in last.

The runner with the Olympic torch (火炬) then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath (宣誓) on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.

The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but there are a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in different sports, like riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.

More and more women are taking part in the Games. They first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912.But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as men.

1. Why is there honour for the losers as well as for the winners?
A.Because losers and winners should be equally treated.
B.Because failure is the mother of success.
C.Because losers need encouragement.
D.Because what really matters is to take part in the Olympic Games.
2. Which of the following is a long-established practice in the opening ceremony?
A.Runners enter the stadium with torches.
B.Each team puts on a wonderful display.
C.The Greek team marches in first.
D.Sportsmen and sportswomen wear magnificent clothes.
3. Who takes the Olympic oath?
A.A judge from a foreign country.B.A sportsman from the host country.
C.An officer from the host country.D.A Greek sportsman.
4. When did women start taking part in the Olympic Games?
A.In 1912.B.In 1900.
C.In 1928.D.In 1924.

10 . The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.

Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.

Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.

1. What can laughter increase according to the author?
A.Cognitive abilityB.Good relationships
C.A sense of humorD.Happiness and trust
2. What does the author think the old should do?
A.They should have a good rest.
B.They should play like children.
C.They should prevent cognitive falling.
D.They should take part in physical play.
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Humor, Laughter and Play for Health
B.Always Keep Our Body Healthy
C.Have an Active and Happy Life
