1 . How to Stay Fit and Beautifully Healthy

Find the time.

1    . Experts recommend that you should aim to be active for at least 30 minutes per day. Try scheduling your exercise the same way that you schedule other appointments and commitments. You’ll be more likely to stick to it.

    2

You will see the most benefits from exercise if you do it regularly. One good way to make it a habit is to pick a form of exercise that you enjoy. For example, if you like swimming, make it a point to swim twice a week.

Go outdoors.

There are definitely some benefits to work out at a gym — air conditioning and televisions are a few.     3    . The varied terrain (地形) of a road, sidewalk, or trail challenges your body, which will do you good.

Use your local parks.

Many parks will have great areas for running or walking.     4    , you can also make use of the tennis courts or basketball courts.

Be social.

If you involve other people in your exercise routine, you’ll see a positive impact in your results. Finding a workout friend can help with responsibilities. If you schedule an activity with a friend, you are less likely to cancel than if you were only canceling on yourself. Group exercise classes also offer benefits.     5    . 2 . A study has found that a lifetime of regular exercise and activity can slow down the aging process (衰老过程). Researchers say that getting older should not necessarily mean becoming more weak or sick. Their research shows that a devotion to a life of movement and exercise may help us live not only longer, but also healthier.

For their study, the researchers looked at two groups. The first group was made up of 125 non-professional cyclists between the ages of 55 to 79. This group included 84 healthy men and 41 healthy women. We will call this group the “cyclists”.

Researchers then found 130 people to make up a second group. Within this group, 75 people were aged from 57 to 80. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but they did not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study.

Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass (肌肉质量), muscular strength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune (免疫的) systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups.

Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.

The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either.

The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.

1. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By comparing.B.By discussing.
C.By imagining.D.By reasoning.
2. Which of the following is a result of the research?

B.The non-exercisers gained weight easily.
C.The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.
D.The non-exercisers usually had health problems.
3. Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?
A.The cyclists had normal aging process.
B.The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.
C.The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.
D.Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Healthy People Need More Exercise
B.Take an Exercise, the Harder, the Better
C.Cycling Is the Best Way to Prevent Aging
D.A Lifetime of Exercise Slows Aging Process

3 . According to a recent report, about 15% of the people in the UK are members of gyms. But are they more likely to be fit?

A study found that gym members were 14 times more active than people who didn’t belong to any health club. Gym members did six hours more exercise a week, and this activity did make them fitter than non-gym members. They also spent less time sitting down every day than non-gym members. The results were the same for men and women.

The study included 405 people between the ages of 30 and 64, and the main characteristics of those who were gym members were the same as those who were not. “But gym members did more training than non-gym members,” said the lead author, Elizabeth Schroeder of the University of Illinois.

While it might seem clear that gym members exercise more and are healthier than non-gym members, Schroeder says this has not been directly shown before. However, the study is only designed to show a tie between gym membership and more exercise. It may be that active people like to join gyms. In the study, people who exercised as much as gym members were also in good health.

You can get the same benefits wherever you exercise. This study shows a gym membership can make you do more exercise, but other research shows that exercising outside has other help. Outdoor activity can make you feel happy about life—especially if you run through a forest.

Outdoor exercise is also more interesting than going to the gym. The first five minutes of outdoor exercise is especially helpful in making people feel good. But Schroeder says that a gym may also encourage greater exercise because it can be social and fun.

1. What did the new study find out?
A.Gym members had healthier eating habits.
B.There were fewer women gym members than men.
C.Gym members were more active than non-gym members.
D.Gym members did at least eight hours of exercise a week.
2. In the study, researchers studied .
A.30 gym members and 64 non-gym members
B.people from different age group
C.some sports lovers
D.405 people who exercise outdoors
3. What does the word “benefits” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Help.B.Need.C.Advice.D.Injury.
4. Which of the following statements will Elizabeth Schroeder agree with?
A.Women should do more gym exercise.
B.We should be careful with outdoor training.
C.Outdoor exercise is better than gym exercise.
D.It is easier to keep exercising if you go to the gym.

4 . One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is lack of interest.     1    . The good news is there are tons of different sports and activities to try to see which one inspires you.

When picking the right type of exercise, it can help to consider your workout personality.     2     If so, solo sports like running, biking, or snowboarding could be for you. Or do you like the shared motivation and companionship that comes from being part of a team? School sports, intramural leagues, club teams, and pick-up games are great ways to stay active with others.

3    . For example, whether your chosen activity is affordable and available to you (Activities like horseback riding may be harder for people who live in cities, for example.) You’ll also want to think about how much time you can set aside for your sport.

It’s a good idea to talk to someone who understands the exercise, like a coach or fitness expert at a gym.     4

Doctors know that most people benefit from regular exercise, even those with disabilities. If you have a health problem or other concern (like being overweight or very out of shape), talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise plan.

Considering the benefits to the heart, muscles, joints, and mind, it’s easy to see why exercise is wise.     5     Even small things can count as exercise when you’re starting out -like taking a short bike ride, walking the dog, or raking leaves.

A.Without fun, it is hard to keep it up.
B.You also need to plan around practical considerations.
C.You have to make a list of your favorite exercises, too.
D.He or she can get you started on a program that’s right for you.
E.Different types of exercise can strengthen different muscle groups.
F.And the great thing about exercise is that it’s never too late to start.
G.For example, you may like to work out alone and on your own schedule.

7 . It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.

Warm up, cool down

1     Your muscles need some time to warm up when it's cold, so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展)once you're finished.

Drink water

You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发)more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts.     2     A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it・

    3

Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic (合成 的))clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分).Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无边小便帽), and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body.     4

Run into the wind

5     . Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.

A.Dress right
B.Keep warm.
C.Don't go too fast, too soon
D.Start and finish in the same way.
E.Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty.
F.Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back
G.On really cold days, wear a mask or scarf over your mouth to protect your face.

9 . Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

A.It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B.It causes water shortages around the world.

3. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________.
A.it is an outdoor sport
B.it improves our health
C.it uses fewer resources
D.it is recommended by experts
4. The author writes the passage to _________.

10 . IV. Summary Writing

Take Care of Your Spine (脊柱)

The spine stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains your spinal cord, a massive collection of nerves that sends electric signals from the rest of your body to your brain. Therefore, it’s important to take care of it.

Maintaining your good posture is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spine healthy. Proper posture means standing or sitting while keeping your spine straight, except for its natural curves. Posture comes into play even when you’re asleep. Sleeping on your side puts less stress on your spine than most other positions. Having a comfortable bed is also very important as sleeping in a position that isn’t comfortable can leave your back feeling sore the next day.

Exercise is also an important factor in the health of your spine. Staying still for too long—even if your posture is good—can be hard on your back. Especially if you work at a desk most of the day, it’s important to get up and stretch periodically. Stretches can help the muscles around your spine relax and allow bones to shift into better positions. Strength exercises with light weights or bodyweight exercises like pushups can also help by strengthening the muscles around your spine. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated motions can hurt the muscles around your spine.

Your diet also affects the health of your spine because many vitamins are necessary for bones and nerves. In particular, B vitamins help keep nerves healthy, so you may want to consider taking a supplement (补充物). Another important factor is vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones, but it’s also absorbed from sunlight, so it may help to do some of those back exercises outside.
