2 . You wear your mask to minimize your risk of Covid-19. But as you walk in a supermarket, you approach someone who looks familiar. To avoid an awkward exchange, you flash them a friendly smile. It's not until you pass that you remember: Your smile was hidden behind a mask.     1     But you can adjust and enhance your communication by focusing on some of the other pieces that aren't hidden behind a mask.

Do remember the face isn't totally covered. Happiness, sadness, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. But when part of the face is masked, it becomes more difficult to recognize them.     2     If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. Bear in mind, eye contact can also make you appear more intelligent and trustworthy.

We communicate through body language. Learning how people use their bodies to convey emotion may help reduce the uncertainty you feel when communicating with someone in a mask.     3     When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual.

4     It's not just what you say but how you say it that matters. Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a lower-pitched whisper may denote sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher-pitched shout could show anger or intensity. Chances are that anyone listening to you could easily identify your emotions without even seeing you. If you feel the need to speak louder, just be aware that raising your voice can alter the message you are trying to send. Changing the tone of your voice can change the whole conversation.     5

A.Become aware of your own body language, too.
B.So instead of increasing volume, try talking clearly.
C.Without question, masks have disturbed social communication.
D.Wearing a mask makes you feel more distracted and self-conscious.
E.Fortunately, you can regain some control over communication by working with the eyes.
F.Facial expressions are the primary way people exhibit emotion.
G.Don't forget the impact of your voice.

3 . As a “major” at university, philosophy may not be so popular nowadays, for it seems to be too abstract, remote and impractical, unlike subjects such as computing, finance, accounting and so on.

Fundamentally speaking, the word “philosophy”,originated from the Greek Φιλοσοφία meaning “love of wisdom”, originally included all kinds of knowledge. In that world dominated by supernatural gods, philosophers and scientists were the same, and their wisdom was started by asking questions. They believed that everything in the world is composed of air and attempted to examine the air and the sun --- these quests developed their wisdom.

The relations between man and the world may be divided into three categories, namely the relationships between man and nature, man and society and within the human self, which are studied separately by the natural sciences, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology; social sciences, such as sociology, economics, politics, law, ethics; and sciences of thinking, such as brain science, neuroscience(神经学), psychology, logic. Philosophy, however, is none of these branches of learning but their abstraction and generalization.

The benefits of studying philosophy may be realized as follows: First, it assists people to properly adjust the relations between nature, society and the self, becoming fully aware of where they stand macrocosmically(宏观地)and microcosmically. Second, it makes people think more systematically, combining various “separated materials”. Essentially, philosophy is the study of thinking, analyzing issues from different angles before anything can be taken in. Special attention is paid to strict reflection during every stage of thinking and this process itself is included as part of its study, so as to form a pattern of clear critical thinking. Third, philosophy can also shape one’s character. Difficult thinking, reasoning and summarizing result in people becoming firmer and more persistent in a deep sense. Since philosophy is finally about living, it leads to an appreciation of meaningful life through perfecting personality.

In a sense, philosophy is in fact widely applicable and has been studied and acquired by experts of natural and social sciences and many philosophers, both at home and abroad, who have become celebrities either in their specialist fields of study or in their switched professions as generalists.

Therefore, philosophy is not abstract, nor remote, but of profound use.

1. How is the second paragraph mainly developed?
A.By classification.
B.By time.
C.By definition.
D.By comparison.
2. Which is NOT one of the relations between man and the world?
A.to understand nature.B.to understand humans.
C.to understand logic.D.to understand society.
3. What benefit can people get from learning philosophy?
A.People can become fully aware of the standing place on the earth.
B.People can become firmer and seldom change their ideas.
C.People will have a simple understanding of the life through appreciation.
D.People will form an opinion after viewing a matter from different aspects.
4. What can be learned about philosophy?
A.It is remote from people’s life and has no profound use.
B.It is filled with wisdom and was established by supernatural gods.
C.It is widely obtained and used by many natural and social experts.
D.It is one of the branches of the natural sciences.

4 . Be black or white, the exact color of a person’s skin is determined by a combination of his parentage and random chance and it affects how every single person treats you. You can’t take your skin off, even if you’re terrified or ashamed to wear it, even if you’re sick and tired of wearing it.

Freddie Gray, who was arrested in 2016 for possessing a legal knife and died in police custody(拘留), was born Black. Tamir Rice , who barely lived more than one being Black, was shot at the age of 12 for playing with a toy gun in 2014. Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed in March when two plainclothes police officers entered her apartment unannounced, didn’t choose to be Black. But the police officers who shot her chose their careers. They chose to shoot her, too. Police across America also chose to shoot 336 other unarmed Black people from 2013-2019.

Each of these victims did not possess a weapon at the time of their murder, and in all but few of the cases they lost their lives because someone "thought" they were reaching for a gun that turned out to be a wallet, cell phone or nothing at all. This is absolutely unacceptable. We're not saying they shouldn't have been captured with all necessary force and imprisoned accordingly. A criminal is a criminal and should be handled as such. But even a criminal, as long as he lives in this great country, is an American worthy of justified handling and a fair trial.

Black people don’t get to sign up for lives of discrimination and terror. They often found themselves moving through wave upon wave of white faces that usually mirrored the same emotions—shock, disbelief and anger. It is the fear of black skin that plays a part in each of these murders. African Americans can no longer tolerate the unjustified killings of their loved ones. As a country, it’s time to start effective dialogues to end this pitiless trend. It has to be a long struggle and pain before Black people overcome prejudice to win the chance of being understood by white ones.

1. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning the murders in Paragraph 2?
A.To provide examples of unjustified killings of Black people.
B.To give an explanation why police officers choose to shoot black people.
C.To offer a description of Police officers’ hatred towards black people.
D.To make an analysis of how hard lives black people were living.
2. What is the author’s attitude towards the killings mentioned in the text?
A.Forgiving.B.Cautious.
C.Disapproving.D.Indifferent.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.The process of overcoming prejudice towards the black is on its way.
B.Black people are ashamed to wear their skin color which leads to injustice.
C.Black people will turn to violence to stop the unjustified killings among them.
D.The police should have chosen a proper way to treat black “criminals”.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.Prejudice from Whites
B.Blacks Call for Justice
C.Policemen’s Fair Trial
D.Fight for Mutual Trust

7 . “If you don't behave, I'll call the police”is a lie that parents might use to get their young children to behave. A new psychological(心理学的) study led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore suggests that it is connected with harmful effects when the children become adults.

The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents as adults, and how well they respond adulthood challenges.

The first questionnaire asked these young adults to recall if their parents told them lies about eating, leaving or staying, spending money and so on. Some examples of such lies are “If you don't come with me now, I will leave you here by yourself”and“I don’t bring money with me today, we can come back another day”.The second questionnaire included questions that could show how often they lie to their parents as adults. Lastly, these young adults filled in two other questionnaires that asked them about their psychological problems and tendency (趋势)to behave selfishly and impulsively(冲动地).

Adults who reported being lied to more as children were more likely to report lying to their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.

Lead author Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore's School of Social Sciences said, “Parenting by lying can seem to save time, especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something are difficult to explain. When parents tell children that‘honesty is the best policy’,but display dishonesty by lying, such behavior can send negative messages to their children. Parents' dishonesty may finally erode trust and encourage dishonesty in children”

“Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has negative influence on children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of these possible risks and consider other ways to replace lying, such as knowing children's feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and solving problems together, to encourage children to have good behavior, ”said lead author Setoh Peipei.

But the study has its limitations. Some limitations of the study include depending on what young adults report about their parents' lying. “Future research can explore using many informants(提供信息的人), such as parents, to report on the same thing”suggested Setoh.

1. What did the research team do during the study?
A.They turned to 379 Singaporean children
B.They looked for questionnaires on the Internet.
C.They collected answers to some sets of questions
D.They asked the young adults parents for information
2. What does the underlined word“erode”in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.buildB.enhanceC.destroyD.recover
3. Which of the following might Setoh Peipei agree with?
A.Parents can sometimes tell harmless lies to their kids
B.Parents had better explain to their kids why they’ve lied
C.Parents who like lying are more likely to behave selfishly
D.Parents should use positive ways instead of lying during parenting
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Parents 'lying to children can influence them negatively
B.Parents lie to children to save themselves some trouble.
C.Children's behavior can be affected by their parents
D.Children may lie more if their parents often lie.

If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way, computer network system would keep on working all the time.

At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers had become cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made “surfing” the Internet more convenient.

Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending email is more and more popular among students.

10 . The third﹣generation hybrid rice which was developed by Yuan Longping, the "father of hybrid rice",and his team underwent its first public yield(产量)monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety, G3﹣1S/P19, came to 1046.3 kg per mu (about 667 square meters), based on two plots of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central China's Hunan Province.

"Some previous high﹣yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important characteristics of the third﹣generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency. " said Qian Qian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.

Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third﹣generation hybrid rice is easier to be cultivated by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not "ideal conditions" carefully selected beforehand but were close to the paddies of ordinary farmers.

Nowadays, China's average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu. Ordinary farmers can produce 600kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second﹣generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third﹣generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu. China now feeds around 20 percent of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's arable(可耕种的)land.

At present, Yuan's team has nine third﹣generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third﹣generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development of China's rice production with higher quality and yield.

1. What feature of the new hybrid rice does Qian Qian mainly talk about?
A.It saves a lot more water.
B.It achieves a higher yield.
C.It saves much more farmland.
D.It has a shorter growing period.
2. Why is the new hybrid rice not tested in ideal areas?
A.The ordinary farmers master planting technology.
B.The researchers want to reduce the experiment cost.
C.The growing conditions the new hybrid rice needs are simple.
D.The previous rice farming provides researchers with experience.
3. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The high output of the third﹣generation hybrid rice.
B.The promising future of the new hybrid rice variety.
C.The advanced technology of the research on hybrid rice.
D.The differences between the three hybrid rice varieties.
4. Which one could be the best title of the text?
A.The Development of China's Rice
B.The Contribution of the Great Scientist
C.The High Yield of the New Hybrid Rice
D.The Way to Feed the World's Population
