1 . There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our families often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride in their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes in the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should not only embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture’s food, but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window on culture, and it should be treated as such.

It was very cold, a poor boy was selling goods door to door. He tried to earn money to pay his way through school. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime (一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.
Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some....a drink of water?” the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give himself energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don't owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Many years passed, the young woman suffered from severe illness. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes, Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

6 . What will the future school look like is difficult to make clear, but most experts agree that the school will be electronic in the future.
“Present-day schools will no longer exist in the next century,” says a report in The Age. “At that time, future schools will become community-style centers, which run seven days a week, 24 hours a day.” At the same time, computers will surely become a central part of the school in the future.
According to The Age, the distant learning will be popular and students will listen to teachers on computers. Going into classrooms on their computers, students will study at any time, which is very easy for them. However, it is necessary for students to go to the actual school in order to develop some social skills.
The Seashore Primary School is an imaginary school in the future created by the Education Department of Australia. At this school, all the teachers and students have laptop computers. Teachers check messages and call students back on a special telephone system and students use telephones to search for information or speak to their experts who teach their lessons. Besides, all the lessons are related to all sorts of subjects and all the students have their own learning plans created by teachers.
As one headmaster says, a laptop computer is students' library. data storage as well as the bridge to a wider world. Technology has changed the emphasis of future learning. Thus, we'll pay more attention to the learning of kids rather than the teaching.

7 . There have been nine secretaries-general of the United Nations since the first one was appointed in 1946. But somehow, Kofi Annan has been the one that people tend to remember the best.
Annan, born in Ghana, was the first black African to ever hold the job. And he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Just as the New York Times put it, Annan“redefined (重新定义) the UN”.
During those 10 years — from 1997 to 2006 — the world was at its worst. This period witnessed the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the Sept. 11 attacks of 2001, and the US's invasion of Iraq in 2003.
On its own, the UN has little power. However, Annan combined that power with his own to achieve great things. He kept the world from falling apart from attacks and wars. He also fought for women’s rights and the educational rights of children, and fought against the spread of HIV in Africa.
It was because of these things that he and the UN were awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, for their work toward"a better organized and a more peaceful world". Annan also put "people" at the center of everything the UN does. He took the trouble to relate to others — young or old, senior or junior, ambassador or security guard.
Mayhe what Annan did was more than just redefine the UN. Indeed, as Antonio Guterres, current secretary-general of the UN, said,"In many ways, Kofi Annan was the UN."

Emma sighed for many times. However hard she tried, she couldn't shake off her disappointment. She and her best friend, Amy, had been planning a shopping day for weeks.
So busy had they been with their final exams that they barely had time to text each other. Emma looked at her empty desk and was reminded of how she had exhausted herself to the breaking point to get ahead in her class, so that she could spend the whole day with Amy. It seemed as if their time together wasn't as important to Amy considering the fact that she had called her a few minutes ago to tell her that she wouldn't be able to keep her promise. Apparently, her other friends dragged her away for a weekend.
Emma tried to take a deep breath even though there was an invisible heavy weight around her heart. She hated to act like someone who was eager for attention, so she just laughed off their plans in front of Amy and made a half-hearted attempt to reschedule them. She sat down heavily in her chair and opened her books.
For the next couple of days, she didn't get any texts or calls from Amy. Her calls went straight to voicemail and her texts were unread. Emily didn’t think too much of this and reasoned that she must have been busy with her new friends.
After a few more days of no contact with Amy, she felt anxious and wondered what had happened, because Amy never ignored her calls. She decided to visit her professors. The trip took her about half an hour. On her arrival, she searched the unfamiliar building for the right class number. She knocked on the door and tapped her foot impatiently. The professor told her Amy was working part-time in the cafe on the other side of the campus.
