There is a popular saying — All good things must come to     1     end. This, however, might not always be true. For the six friends in Friends, the “good things”— the friendships between them have never really ended.

Perhaps you haven't seen Friends. The TV series (连续剧) tells the story of six ordinary young people    2     came to New York City to make their fortune and find love. Each of them had a different     3    (personal). However, they were able to put their differences aside and became good friends.

Such a long time     4    (pass) since the last episode (一集) of Friends was on. Fans have been looking forward to     5    (see) the six friends' reunion on the screen. That wish finally came true. A special episode, Friends: The Reunion,     6    (broadcast) online on May 27,2021.

Your English teacher once probably advised you to watch Friends. For sure, watching the series will help you learn English. But you can learn a little     7    (much) from Friends than the others. One thing it can teach us all is how     8     (gain) lasting friendships. As Rachel once said, “     9    (obvious), there were no cellphones back in the 1990s. It was just friends sitting around     10    chatting together.” If you want to have lifelong friends, don’t just chat online. Make sure to always be there — for your friends!

3 . A 16th century drawing by one of the key figures of the German Renaissance has been valued in excess of $10 million after it was initially purchased at a yard sale for just $30 in 2017. According to Agnews Gallery — the London auction house in possession of the artwork — Albrecht Dürer, who died in 1528, is regarded as both the greatest German artist of his time and as one of the most important artists and intellectuals of the European Renaissance. The drawing that has been rediscovered is titled “The Virgin and Child”. As Dürer’s career and legacy have been studied in depth since his death, it is extremely rare to find unknown works of his.

Boston-based art collector Clifford Schorer, who is a consultant to the gallery, added Thursday that he came across the rare artwork, thought to have been completed in 1503, by chance on the way to a party in Massachusetts in 2019. He had forgotten to bring a gift to the party, so he went to a bookstore, which sold collectable volumes. The bookseller told him his friend had a Dürer drawing and asked if he would take a look at it. Schorer agreed, but held out little hope.

The artwork had been purchased at a yard sale at the home of an architect who had been gifted the piece from his art dealer father, Schorer said. “Generally speaking, it’s an inverse (反向的) relationship between how dramatic the claim is and how much of a let down it is. For example if someone tells me they have a Leonardo da Vinci, I’m usually pretty confident I’m going to see some images that are unimpressive, ” Schorer said.

But when he arrived to examine the artwork weeks later, he was taken aback by its quality. “It was like experiencing a kind of electricity. When you’re in my world you spend your life looking for unknown things that lead to fascinating research avenues…and I could see I was at the beginning of something extremely exciting,” Schorer said.

1. Why is it rare to find the unknown works of Albrecht Dürer’s?
A.He was a key figure of the German Renaissance.
B.His real works were only sold at the yard sales.
C.His works were studied carefully after he died.
D.He had few works like “The Virgin and Child”.
2. What did Clifford Schorer do on his way to a party?
A.He went to buy a gift.
B.He collected old volumes.
C.He went to a gallery.
D.He visited his old friends.
3. Why did Clifford Schorer mention the example of Leonardo da Vinci?
A.To show the value of Dürer’s drawing.
B.To describe his contradictory feelings.
C.To improve his own confidence in art.
D.To show the painting is unimpressive.
4. The underlined phrase “taken aback” in the last paragraph may mean .
A.soldB.shocked
C.excitedD.excused

For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.

For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, which made her feel lonely.

So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.

Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would upset her neighbors.

One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbor, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few times.

However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys for pets.

7 . With the rapid development, the city of Chongqing is becoming more and more attractive to outsiders, including foreigners. For 26-year-old Moldovan Gabriela Cojocaru, who has the Chinese nickname Li Xiaoxiao, Chongqing is the beginning of a dream.

In September 2014, Xiaoxiao, who has studied ethnic dance and ballet since childhood, graduated from the Moldovan National Dance Academy, and several classmates joined her on a trip to China. However, she did not know any Chinese or even English. She made many friends from China, which gradually solved her obstacles in language communication and made herself better adapted to life in China.

“I think as a foreigner, first you have to learn Chinese,” she said. “Then you can go to better understand the culture and the Chinese people.” But after learning what she thought was Chinese, she discovered that the language she had spent two years learning is actually the Chongqing dialect. Such is her delivery that even a Chongqing local would be hard to tell that she is a foreigner by just hearing her voice. As Xiaoxiao thought Chongqing dialect was standard Chinese, she took considerable efforts to be good at it. This “mistake” has turned out to be a lucky strike.

But she is more interested in doing something that helps the two countries understand each other. As such, she introduced Chinese food or Chongqing food, and stories about China to her friends in Moldova. She plans to introduce the history and specialties of Moldova, such as Moldo van wine, to the Chinese. She hopes to let more people know that this country actually has a rich history of more than 5,000 years of wine-making.

“I’d love to do it,” she said. “I will continue to strengthen the culture of the two countries and hope that the two countries will become better and better.”

1. Why does Xiaoxiao make Chinese friends?

“You’re fired!” Andrew Chilton wasn’t joking. At that moment, the high school junior wanted his personal care attendant, Christy Chachere, out of his life forever. He didn’t want her help any more. He thought he could write his own term papers. “You’re fired!” He said it again.

Christy Chachere, a retired PE teacher, didn’t take a step back. She believed she could do this job. “You know, I’ve taught middle schoolers,” she said. What about Andrew’s outcry? It was music to her ears. Progress was faster than expected.

When Andrew suffered from autism (自闭症) at age eight, people told his mom, Cindy, to get him on the list for an attendant to provide after-school care. Someone would drive him to places and see that he was safe. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the wait can be years, the need far outstrips (超过) the supply. Cindy had no choice but to turn to the program Volunteers of America for help.

Even so, it was eight years before they were matched with Christy. In the meantime. Andrew’s family did their best to help him get through life’s hardships. “I did worry about him,” said Cindy. There was a lot to worry about. Doctors and school teachers said that Andrew might not even graduate from high school. Other questions were around the corner as well. Would he ever have a job, or live independently?…Cindy would do anything for her son.

Christy saw the problem right away. “Andrew wouldn’t take a step without his mother’s permission (同意),”she recalled. “You have to let him fail,” she told the family. “It’s the only way he’s going to learn. He has to be able to do things on his own.”

No longer would Cindy help Andrew write papers. His younger brother wouldn’t help him with the computer, either. It was a little unacceptable to step back. Actually, everyone was on board but Andrew.

Poetry combines sound and sense, which implies a deeper meaning beyond the words on the page. Readers find it challenging to reveal the     1     (hide) dimensions. Here are some useful     2     (strategy) on how to better understand and appreciate poems.

Firstly, follow your ears. You     3     (advice) to ask “How does it sound?” instead of “What does it mean?” Read it aloud     4     you will feel how the poem sounds. Secondly, approach the poem as if you were an explorer in an unfamiliar landscape. Ask some basic questions to see concrete images in your mind. Then make     5     most of the surroundings to dig up clues to give you a greater understanding of the poem. Thirdly, if you are struggling     6     (interpret) the meaning of a poem with much painstaking effort, just stay patient. Sometimes it takes a lifelong time to understand a poem     7     (thorough). Poems that constantly reveal deeper and previously unrecognized meanings are more interesting     8     those that are easy to understand.
