4 . The idea of biophilia — that humans love spending time in nature — has been around for generations. While it’s well-known that we get psychological benefits from nature, it’s not always clear which parts of nature provide those perks. Is a city park as good as an old-growth forest? What about less green natural settings like deserts?
Much of the focus of current findings has been on visual features of nature (like trees, flowers or beaches), but a new study takes a slightly different approach. Set to unfold over the next three years, it intends to find out the effects of bird songs on human’s brains.
Lead researcher Eleanor Ratcliffe tells the Guardian: “Much anecdotal evidence suggests we respond positively to birdsong. However, now there’s a lack of scientific research on the psychological effects of listening to birds.”
With funding from the U. K. National Trust and the Surrey Wildlife Trust, Ratcliffe will begin by interviewing a representative sample of the public to judge their perception (感知) of natural sounds. She’ll try to find out if bird songs can improve mood and attention after stress or tiredness. Later in the study, she’ll seek test subjects via social media to assess the effects of bird songs on their brains and behavior. Beyond that, she hopes to learn more about which kind of bird songs improve mental health, and in what ways.
We’ll have to wait for answers, since the study is scheduled to take years. However, as National Trust ecologist Peter Brash argues, dedicated birders already know the benefits of bird songs. “Birdsong gives us a warm glow inside when we hear it,” he writes on the National Trust’s website. “We’re all used to the need to eat five fruits and vegetables a day or take a 30-minute walk. Taking the time out to listen to five minutes of birdsong every day could also be beneficial to our well being.”

5 . It’s been 13 years since The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin passed away and his family is continuing to keep his legacy (遗产) alive. The family continues to carry on the preservation efforts he was so passionate about.
His wife, Terri Irwin, recently revealed that the family officially finished work on an elephant hospital in his honor, which was one of Steve’s greatest dreams.
“We just finished one of his greatest goals,” said Terri to Buzzfeed News. “In Sumatra, when elephants step on a landmine (地雷) or they get caught in a trap, there was no hospital to treat them, and now we have just opened an elephant hospital, so it’s pretty special.”
The Sumatra elephant hospital was constructed and staffed with help from the Australia Zoo in Queensland. “Steve dreamed of opening an elephant hospital after seeing with his own eyes the issues they were facing in the wild,” said an Australia Zoo spokesperson. The new elephant hospital is just one of many projects that the family continues to do in honor of Steve’s legacy, according to his daughter Bindi Irwin.
“We have projects all over the planet, which he was so enthusiastic about and which we’ve continued,” said Bindi. “Helping rhinos and cheetahs in Africa, tigers in Sumatra — it’s so important for us to continue Dad’s legacy and what he loved most, which was wildlife protection.”
The Irwin family is one of the most inspirational families out there and it’s amazing to see how they continue to honor their father with the special work they do.

6 . Ireland is known for its amazing seaside scenery and country landscapes. Stop for some live music in a village pub or head for the big cities of Dublin and Belfast for wonderful cultural activities. Here is the best guide to your trip to Ireland.
The best time to visit
The weather in Ireland tends to be mild but cool in April and May, and going to the country in spring is a good way to beat the tourist crowds that arrive in June, July and August. September is also a good time to visit Ireland before the winter arrives.
Getting around
If you plan to stick to the cities of Dublin and Belfast, there is little need for a car. Both cities are small enough to explore on foot and Dublin has a good public transportation system. Major towns are well connected by private coaches, but it is a good idea to hire a car if you want to see rural (乡村的) Ireland.
Things to do
Ireland is the perfect vacation destination for music lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and slow travelers who like to experience local lifestyles by exploring small towns and villages.
●Take a walk: Ireland has six national parks as well as splendid hills and landscapes. Walking is a popular way to relax.
●Go to the pub: No trip to Ireland is complete without a few nights in the pub. This is where you will enjoy live traditional music, local beer and delicious food that tastes just like what is cooked at home.
●Plan a road trip: To see as much as possible, plan to experience at least one of Ireland’s best drives. Perhaps you want to experience the Beara Peninsula or explore the Causeway coast. The small towns and unexpected scenery you will discover along the way make Ireland a truly special place to visit.

8 . For a long time, people had to listen to the radio to get news, drama and music at home. This all changed with the development of the television in the early 20th century.
For most of TV’s history, we have fitted our weekday evenings around broadcasts of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Except that’s no longer the case. Today, we have the power to watch whatever we want, whenever we want, wherever we want through streaming (流媒体) services. The services have given us access to more content than was ever possible, including back catalogues of classic shows and movies.
It’s not just the streaming services that are taking away audiences from traditional TV channels either. Social media sites also provide competition to traditional TV since they allow the uploading of video content, meaning users can watch more shorter clips (剪辑) at their convenience.
In the UK, adults are spending more time watching content on streaming services than ever before. In 2018, these figures were 26 minutes per day. This has been the trend for the past decade and it doesn’t look like it will be changing any time soon. While demand for streaming services is growing, the main UK channels continue to be the most watched overall. For example, in 2018 UK adults continued to watch BBC One for an average of 41 minutes per day, more than any streaming services.
While the traditional TV networks have seen a decline, the television set itself doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon. Most major TV channels have their own catch-up streaming services, which significantly increase their viewing figures. Additionally, the BBC began making content that’s only available through its iPlayer service. BBC Two allows its viewers to watch original content at their convenience without having to wait for the show to air on TV first.
So, while around 50% of all households now subscribe to at least one streaming service, there is no way of knowing where television is going.
