1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completed ruined. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the hardest.

One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely shattered(破碎的) mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downward. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.

The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.

“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them. I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.

While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.

Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, much-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat, painted-on-face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, Honey,” I said.” You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”

Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”

Paragraph. 1:

The boys had watched,open-mouthed,as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.

3 . Most of us don’ t have millions of dollars to go door-to-door to persuade people to care about climate change.     1     So let’s talk to them about climate change. Because if we can’t convince our parents to take action on climate, who can we convince?

It might be a hard conversation. If you do accept this challenge, here are a few suggestions:

Talk to them with love and respect. If you’ve ever used any poisonous terms, please get rid of them from your vocabulary.     2

Share a couple of informative articles on the topic. Bill Mckibben’s article in Rolling Stone is great and very readable.     3     The most important thing for them to understand is that on our current path we may no longer have a climate that allows for secure societies within the lifetimes of today’s children.

Once these unpleasant facts are laid out, make it clear that you aren’t blaming them for this. Your parents likely made all of their decisions with a strong sense of morality and social responsibility, and could only make those decisions based on the information they had at the time.     4     But now that you have provided this new information, talk about how it warns them, and all of us, to behave in new ways.

Encourage them to buy environmentally friendly goods and services as much as possible. Talk to them about trying to avoid using or use less fossil fuels. But given the urgency and severity of the problem, also make it clear that this will not be enough.     5

A.But most of us do have parents.
B.Ask them to please care for both of them.
C.Otherwise, you’ re making everything worse.
D.There’s no need to flood them with data.
E.And give them a hug, because they’d probably like that!
F.This is a challenge that requires us all to act as citizens, not just as consumers.
G.Therefore, if they have done something improper before, it is not necessarily their fault.

5 . Sweat rolled off my forehead as my younger brother and I sat under the tree.

“Hi, Jason,” said my brother, Chad, “Do you hear the train?” I listened, but I heard only thunder in the distance. It was still miles away, but I heard it. It grew stronger and louder as it gained speed and got closer. How could that be? I wondered.

We were about to grab our bikes to see what it actually was when we stopped. What looked like a flock of birds darkened the sky overhead. When I looked at it closer, I realized it wasn't birds. It was a tornado (龙卷风). The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the air turned green and heavy. The sun disappeared, The wind strengthened and roared. I grabbed Chad's arm and pulled him toward the house.

I tried to open the door, but it was as if an invisible force pushed against me. The door refused to open. When we finally managed to get inside, we found it was as dark as night. Our family had practiced a tornado safety plan many times. But I had never imagined that it would be just Chad and me at home the first time we needed to use it.

“Inside the closet!” I yelled. It was small and crowded, but we got in it anyway. Chad began to cry. “It's going to be all right.” I told him. But I was worried about Mom. I hope she'd found a safe place to wait out the storm.

The storm continued. I heard a thud on the roof. I felt the whole house shaking. Then it was quiet. I opened the door and we inched our way out of the closet. Rain had got in through the open window and wet the carpets. A kitchen window had shattered, its screen blown away. I looked at the backyard. The tree was uprooted, and broken branches lay on the ground.

“Jason, I can't get service,” Chad said as he held the phone in his hand. We had no electricity, either I glanced at the wall clock. Had it been only 20 minutes since we'd first heard the thunder?

Then I heard footsteps toward the house. Mom had made it home safely. “Boys!” she yelled. “Are all right?”

We ran out and hugged her. The sun came out, and this time it shone bright and clear.

6 . For many of us, summertime means road trips to the beach or mountains, or at the very least some additional dust on the outside of our vehicle. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two things: wash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment?

The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water used and the types of chemicals used to get rid of the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at home, says Katy Gresh, spokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to keep a set amount of water in a container for the entire wash. “You don’t want to leave the water running or use more than you need for the job,” she says. But even following this piece of advice comes with an environmental risk: Washing your car in the driveway gets the dirty water into drains (下水道).

“Drains are not made for treating waste.” says John Schombert, executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather. Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their car, Schombert says they are probably ineffective in breaking down grease(油脂)anyway.

The commercial car wash knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in drains. According to the International Carwash Association (ICA), professional car washes must use special water treatment systems. These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.

As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of water. Compare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.

1. What does Katy suggest people do about washing cars?
A.Use soft toothbrushes.B.Save treated water.
C.Put aside some water.D.Avoid using chemicals.
2. What is Schombert’s attitude to washing cars at home?

3. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Rules of handling wastewater.B.Advantages of professional car washes.
C.Processes of getting rid of dirty water.D.Drawbacks of water treatment systems.
4. Which mehod of car washing consumes the least water?

8 . World Environment Day: Eco-friendly fashion tips

June 5 saw another World Environment Day. Yet environmental protection ought to be an everyday activity. It shouldn't be something only remembered as a slogan. Saving water and using public transportation can help benefit our future generations in the long run.    1    . Follow these tips:

Buy less

Many people take shopping, or buying things that are not necessary, as a way to release pressure. And nowadays, almost everyone buys more clothes than needed.    2    . Unnecessary shopping could become another source of pressure to both your finances and the environment.

    3    .

Natural material is good for not only the environment, but also the mind and body. The feeling of wearing a polyester shirt and an organic cotton shirt is totally different, especially in the hot summer.

Use natural cleanser

Washing powder will pollute the water and harm your clothes. Try a natural cleanser. It can clean your clothes thoroughly without doing any harm to either the environment or your skin.

    4    .

Dry cleaning will cause a lot of damage to the environment. Baby shampoo can clean these delicate textiles as well.

Smart shopping

5    . It's true especially for those you only wear on special occasions. And there are services for renting clothes, which can also help you save money and protect the environment.

A.Choose naturally dyed products
B.Choose natural and organic material
C.Secondhand clothes can be a smarter choice.
D.Find a better and healthier way to release pressure.
E.Reduce the times you dry-clean pure woolen and silk items.
F.Your wardrobe could also be more environmentally friendly too.
G.If you still can't change old shopping habits, try to buy less fur products.

9 . "Basically,in life, rule of thumb:if you don't absolutely have to clean anything, don't clean it."Fashion designer Stella McCartney said this in an interview with the Observer this weekend.Instead, she says, the"rule"is to"let the dirt dry and you brush it off".

It may have been a throwaway comment at the end of the interview, but something about this line impressed readers—many of whom have been doing several loads of laundry a week.So does she have a point? Is it better to avoid washing your clothes?

This isn't the first time that McCartney has recommended not washing our clothes. In fact, she has long advocated avoiding the washing machine-both for the longevity of the clothes, but also because of the effect washing them has on the environment.

Laura Diáz Sánchez, from the Plastic Soup Foundation advocacy group, agrees with this, particularly when it comes to high-street clothes, which contain more synthetic materials such as polyester(聚酯纤维)and acrylic(腈纶).

"Every time we wash our clothes an average of nine million[plastic]microfibres are released into the environment,"she tells BBC News."The way we wash our clothes affects it,as well as the way our clothes are made-but the more we wash our clothes, the more microfibres are released."

When you do wash, she recommends setting the machine to a lower temperature and using liquid detergent:"Powder detergent creates more friction(摩擦)between the clothes[during washing],so more fibres are released, while liquid is smoother. The less friction there is in general, the fewer fibres are released."

She advises against overloading washing machines for the same reason-fewer clothes in the drum means there's less friction. But it's not just about microfibres.Washing an item of clothing too often can largely shorten its lifespan, meaning that you're more likely to throw it out and buy something new.

1. Why does McCartney suggest not washing clothes?
A.To buy something more fashionable.
B.To make her interview more interesting.
C.To reduce the impact on the environment.
D.To avoid releasing microfibres.
2. What does the underlined words"this line"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The rule.B.The newspaper.
C.The interview.D.The comment.
3. According to Laura Diáz Sánchez, what can we do to release less microfibres?
A.Use powder detergent rather than liquid detergent.
B.Wash fewer clothes at a time.
C.Set the washing machine at a normal temperature.
D.Avoid using washing machines.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Why we should stop washing clothes.
B.A practical rule of washing clothes.
C.Fashion designer's recommendations.
D.How to lengthen clothes'lifespan.

While thousands of college students headed for warm climate to enjoy sun and fun during their week off from classes, seven local students had other plans.

The Northern Essex Community College (NECC) students and one of their teachers spent part of their spring break in New York City, helping repair an area     1     (destroy) by the hurricane. “I wanted to see for myself what happened,” said Terry. “I couldn’t imagine    2    it is like to lose your home and everything that you know and the    3    (power) effect the hurricane had on those people. I wanted to do something, to understand their feeling of helplessness.” The group headed into Brooklyn’s Red Hook district, which was hit hard by the hurricane. There they met people from other parts of the country,     4    had also volunteered to help. Together, those volunteers and the NECC students worked     5     (clear) rubbish out of a three-story building. They put on protective suits and gloves    6    they entered the building.

Inside the building, the students saw nothing but broken walls and doors and pieces of the building     7    (lie) all over the place.

The students returned to school with     8    sense of achievement, a feeling     9    they helped people in need. I was remarkable how a community lost so much and was still able to recover, and this left the deepest impression    10    the students.
