2 .

As you probably know, the town council (议会) has got £1 million to spend in improving the town’s facilities for young people and we’re looking for great ideas on how to spend the money well. Post your ideas in the forum (论坛)   below and let us know how we can make life better for you.

Here are some ideas.

There’s nothing for teenagers to do in this town, especially at night. Can we use the money to build a youth club? Somewhere with a pool table and a table tennis table, perhaps. We need somewhere to play happily and hang out safely in the evenings. —Daisy, 15

I think the best use for the money is to build a playground in the town park. It should have lots of rides for the young kids. I’d like to have a skateboard park for a start and maybe if there is enough money, we can have a climbing wall, too. —Luke, 13

As I’m only 14, I can’t drive, so I go everywhere on my bike. But the roads are dangerous and many motorists drive too fast. How about spending the money in building more cycle lanes? We could also put in more speed cameras and zebra crossings, too. This will make life safer for all our citizens, not just the young people. —Liz, 14

How about a big billboard at the entrance to the town that reads, “TEEN WARNING—there’s nothing to do here!” —Sadie, 16

This probably sounds like a boring idea, but can’t we use some of the money to buy more litter bins? I feel ashamed of our town when I see much litter on the ground. We need to tidy up our town quickly! —Jack, 15

Our high street is full of empty shops because everyone just shops at the new shopping centre outside of town or online. Why don’t we use the money to turn some of these empty shops into an arts centre? It can have studios where we can draw and paint or learn how to make films. We can also have a music studio where local bands can record music cheaply. —Alex, 17

1. How much money has the town council got?

2. What do Daisy and Sadie think of the town?

3. What does Luke want to have most in his idea?

文章大意:本文主要介绍了科学家辨别动物年龄的一些方法。

5 . Does it really matter if we know how old animals are? To many scientists, it does.

When studying animal populations, it is of great importance to scientists to know how many animals there are and how old they are. This information can help scientists learn which animals are thriving and which ones need more care and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age.

For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some teeth don’t come in until a certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth, milk teeth and permanent teeth. They normally get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then they have the next pair at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four...

Hair and skin can also provide information about age. Some animals tend to get bad skin and gray hair as they get older. If you have an older dog, you may have noticed that its nose and mouth get grayer as it gets older.

Animals’ eyes and ears might also help scientists tell animals’ age. As animals get older, their hearing often becomes weak and their eyesight might begin to fail.

Scientists are continuing to discover new and more ways of telling the age of animals. Recently, scientists have learned that ______. That’s really good news!

文章大意:本文介绍了为了能够使得建筑物在地震中不对生命造成威胁,工程师们提出的一些拯救生命的想法。

6 . There is a saying that “earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” It seems sadly true. Thousands of people died under bricks (砖块) of the damaged (毁坏的) buildings during the recent earthquakes. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof (抗震) buildings? Engineers have some life-saving ideas.

“Lift” the house up

To prevent earthquake waves from going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building’s foundation above the ground. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are usually made up of steel and rubber. During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays steady (平稳的). This can reduce the strength of earthquake waves by 13 to 15 percent, according to the website Bethinking the Future.

Right materials

Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to bend (弯曲) without breaking. Some of these materials include steel, wood and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood. During earthquakes, wooden buildings bend to avoid building up stress. Steel is one of the main materials of modern tall buildings because it can increase their ductility (延展性).

Dome house

A Japanese company has made dome-shaped houses with styrofoam. Styrofoam is a very light material. The whole house weighs only 80 kilograms. So when earthquakes happen, the house will not hurt people.

Besides, there are many other good ideas on building earthquake-proof buildings. For example, a company in America is developing magnetic field (磁场) technology that can raise houses above ground when earthquakes happen. We hope these ideas can be put in action and more people’s lives can be saved.

1. How does the writer lead into the passage in Paragraph 1?
A.By telling a joke.B.By using a saying.C.By asking a question.
2. Why can the pads help buildings stay steady in an earthquake?
A.Because they can stop the ground movement.
B.Because they can lift up buildings far from the ground.
C.Because they can reduce the strength of earthquake waves.
3. What do we know about Japan’s traditional houses?
A.Bamboo is the most common material used for the houses.
B.Most are hard to bend thanks to the use of steel.
C.Most are built with wood which is easy to bend without breaking.
4. What is the advantage of using styrofoam in dome-shaped houses during earthquakes?
A.It reduces the weight of the houses.
B.It raises the houses above the ground.
C.It increases the strength of the houses.

7 . Sharing your opinions is fun when everyone else agrees with you. But what about when they don’t? No one likes feeling like the strange one out, and these days it seems like people with unpopular opinions are more likely to get shunned (回避). Does that mean you should change your opinions to conform (符合) to the majority’s beliefs? Of course not. Here’s what you should do.

Say it, but don’t push it

We all have ideas that we want to share. But don’t try to convince (说服) other people that your opinion is the best idea or the only idea they should have. Stand your ground, but don’t be condescending (居高临下的).

Be respectful of other people’s opinions, too

It’s not only you who need to express an opinion. Everyone should have the chance, and you should give them that chance. When people share their thoughts, be open to them and don’t bring them down for unpopular opinions.

Agree to disagree

Sometimes, we have to accept the fact that we won’t agree on everything. When your opinions clash (冲突), make sure that it ends there. Don’t have any arguments or negative feelings. Agree to disagree when there’s no other way for you.

Unpopular opinions can rock the boat when it comes to conversations. But they can be the best conversation topics. Having an unpopular opinion is hard, but it doesn’t have to ruin your relationships or your self-esteem (自尊). With the right way, you can stand firm (坚定地) in your beliefs, even when you feel like others don’t share them.

You can share a different idea on the topic. Be sure not to be so surprised when someone doesn’t agree with you. It is an unpopular opinion, after all. Learning how to handle having an unpopular opinion is important if you want to be able to share your opinion respectfully and effectively, and you don’t want to feel emotionally isolated (孤立的) because of your opinion.

1. What can we learn from the passage?
A.We should use our opinions to challenge others’ opinions.
B.We should try our best to make our friends accept our ideas.
C.When we share our opinions, we should stop others from talking.
D.When it’s hard to accept different opinions, we should set them aside.
2. The words “rock the boat” in Paragraph 5 probably mean “______”.
A.bring benefitsB.draw away attentionC.make troubleD.win support
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The collection of unpopular opinions.B.Ways to deal with unpopular opinions.
C.The importance of unpopular opinions.D.Benefits of having unpopular opinions.

Junior high school life is coming to an end. It’s time to reflect (反思), think about what you’ve learned, note how you’ve grown and changed, and consider what it could all mean for you.

Start with a diary.

You can write down your reflections in your diary. Here are some questions to help you. What do you want to remember about the past three years? What challenged you the most? Make a more/less list.

Draw a line down the center of the paper. On the left, write the word “MORE”. On the right, write the word “LESS”. Now ask yourself what you want more. If you want more exercise, write basketball or soccer in the “MORE” list. Do the same for the “LESS” side. If you want less computer games, add it to your “LESS” list.

Write a thank-you letter.

Who would you like to thank most? How has this person helped you to grow over the past years? Think about what you would say to this person. Write down everything that you are thankful to this person for. To show your real feelings, you don’t need to overthink it. Just use the words that come straight from your heart. Animals are natural resources (自然资源) that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feather, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can cause many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice, with no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. However, only 12 countries have passed laws. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
