1 . Well-known Chinese writer and translator Yang Jiang passed away at the age of 105 on May 25, 2016. But four years later, many people are still remembering her by posting Yang’s photos on the Internet.

Having studied in the UK and France, Yang was good at both English and French. And she started learning Spanish at the age of 48 in order to translate a great work—Don Quixote (《唐·吉诃德》). As a result, Yang finished the translation of Don Quixote over a period of 10 years. Published in 1979, it was regarded as the best translation of the classic in China. She thought about every word and sentence when she did translation. Yang only translated about 500 words at a time when most translators can translate as many as 2,000 words or so a day.

Yang is known for her writings as well as her translation achievement. She published Six Chapters of My Life in 1981 and Baptism (《洗澡》) in 1988. Baptism is about the lives of Chinese intellectuals(知识分子) in the 1950s. It was praised highly by both the readers and other writers. But Yang said, “Baptism was just an experiment to test myself and see if I am able to write novels.”

Though Yang herself considered her works as attempts(尝试), each of her attempts was a success. These attempts showed her calm and simple state of mind rather than the desire(渴望) for fame or wealth.

Without doubt, Yang will long be remembered for her great achievements. Her great works and the selfless spirit may be her greatest wealth left to us.

2 . California is burning! Wildfires have spread across the US state since Oct 23 and smoke has filled its skies.

Take the Kincade Fire in northern California for example. It forced 200,000 people to escape(逃跑) its path within one week. The state’s largest power company cut power to about 206,000 homes in order to stop more fires from breaking out, CBS News reported.

California has seen many wildfires in recent years. Nine of the 10 biggest fires have happened since 2000, including five since 2010, according to The New York Times.

Why is this? California has the perfect wildfire conditions, Park Williams, a US climate expert (气候专家), told The New York Times. It has dry air and high temperatures from spring through late fall. At the same time, seasonal winds blow across the state every year, causing the wildfires to spread quickly and last for weeks.

Global warming has also made the fires worse in recent years. It has dried out the state’s trees and other plant life, causing them to burn more easily.

Humans have played a role as well. Burning campfires, garbage debris (垃圾碎片), and cigarette ends can easily cause wildfires. For example, one fire started last year when a car got a flat tire (漏了气的轮胎). The car’s body met the road and sent out sparks (火花), starting a fire.

Lightning strikes (雷击) and volcanic eruptions (火山爆发) can also cause wildfires. However, humans have caused 90 percent of California’s wildfires, according to the US National Park Service.

Wildfires often happen in wooded areas in the US, Canada and Australia. They are also known as forest fires or grass fires, or as bushfires (森林火灾) in Australia.

Wildfires can burn at over 900℃ and reach heights of more than 50 meters. They can move at speeds of up to 23 kilometers an hour, burning everything—trees, brush, homes, even people—in their path.

A.people set forests on fire on purposeB.car accidents don’t cause wildfires

4. According to the story, what have/has caused most wildfires in California?
A.Lightning strikes.B.Volcanic eruptions.

4 . Breakfast is food for the brain. And it’s good even for people worrying about their weight. Middle school students who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthy weight than those who don’t eat breakfast. This is true even for students who eat two breakfasts — one at home and one at school. “Not skipping(跳过) breakfast helps you not overeat later in the day,” says Marlene Schwartz.

One study has found many kids end up eating two breakfasts. People become worried that kids who eat breakfast both at home and at school might become overweight. In fact, Schwartz now says that’s not what her data(数据) have turned up.

Her group studied 600 middle school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfast. About 34 to 44 percent of all students said they usually ate breakfast at home. Almost one in every six kids usually ate breakfast at school. About one in every 10 kids ate breakfast both at home and at school. Eating habits changed as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to eat breakfast. But 22 percent of the seventh graders often didn’t eat breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school.

The study found no evidence(证据) of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts.

Why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? The researchers don’t know yet. But one explanation may be that school breakfast is very healthy and controlled in size. So eating that along with the home breakfast may not be bad for most active and growing middle school students.

1. According to Paragraph 1, why do some people NOT want to eat breakfast?
A.Because they are worried about putting on weight.
B.Because they don’t consider it to be important.
C.Because they are tired of eating breakfast at school.
D.Because they don’t have time to eat breakfast.
2. Among 600 students that were studied, we can find that ___________.
A.most kids ate breakfast at schoolB.the kids eating breakfast twice were getting fat
C.more than half of the students didn’t eat breakfastD.seventh graders skipped breakfast more often than fifth graders
3. What does Schwartz think about eating two breakfasts?
A.All the girls should stop doing it.B.It can be good for most teenagers.
C.We should try our best to eat a second breakfast.D.Eating two breakfasts is just right for the boys.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Eating breakfast twice will make people put on weight.
B.Giving up breakfast is more likely to help lose weight.
C.Having two breakfasts has little to do with being overweight.
D.Having breakfast at home can make kids stay healthy and thin.

5 . There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions.

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounds like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩踏) very hard.

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate (充气) a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead?

One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built—in radio, so you can listen to sports games all day with your hands free. The Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do ‘high—fives’ with you! That’s fantastic! I wonder if you have any wonderful ideas for inventions like these.

1. How many inventions are mentioned in the passage?
A.3B.4C.5D.6
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The writer doesn’t like the invention of a bicycle that can cross the river.
B.you can watch matches by wearing a baseball cap with a built—in radio.
C.You can start the car invented by Australians after drinking if you have an emergency.
D.You needn’t pedal the bicycle while you are inside the huge plastic ball.
3. What’s the meaning of the underlined word“high—fives”in the last paragraph?
A.举手击掌B.举高手掌C.挥手欢呼D.起立欢呼
4. What’s the passage mainly talking about?
A.The reason why these inventions don’t become popular.
B.These inventions should be more successful.
C.Everyone should have one wonderful idea like these inventions.
D.Some information about unusual inventions.

8 . What is your zodiac (生肖)animal? According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 12 animals mark 12 different years. It is the basis of the Chinese zodiac. Nowadays, Chinese zodiac animals have worldwide fame and are increasingly popular among western people.

The zodiac is an important part of Chinese culture. People believe that the characteristics (特点) of a zodiac animal influence the personality of every person born in that year. For example, people born in the Year of the Tiger are considered powerful and brave.

Zodiac animals also have some social functions. When people think it is not proper to ask: “How old are you”, they may change their question to “What is your zodiac animal?” With this question, you can figure out (计算出) roughly which year someone was born and the person’s age.

Zodiac animals are not special to China. Many countries share a similar zodiac culture with China. For example, in the Japanese zodiac, a wild boar (野猪) takes the place of a pig and the Vietnamese (越南的) zodiac has a cat instead of a rabbit.
