2 . A lot of people find it difficult to do exercise regularly, even though they know it’s good for their physical and mental (身心上的) health. Yet keeping on a workout routine doesn’t necessarily go to the gym or run around your neighborhood. Gardening is a great example of a popular hobby that can be used as a workout.

Nashville resident Tom Adkinson, 72, is on board with the idea of gardening to stay fit. He has three gardens, which he uses primarily to grow tomatoes, sweet banana peppers and okra. Like traditional exercise, Adkinson does a lot of preparation before gardening, and then he spends hours watering and weeding (除草) all three gardens, involving bending and stretching, which he compares to performing garden yoga.

“It is wise of Adkinson to do so. Even though gardening may not appear difficult, using the body in new ways can make you hurt if you don’t warm up beforehand,” said Zeller, who teaches at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County in New Jersey.

Working in your garden just two hours a week could improve your mood. And the communal gardening, which is done by a number of people as a group in communities and schools, provides social benefits that can reduce stress and help fight against loneliness and even dementia according to studies.

“With all these benefits, gardening for fitness will be a trend (趋势) in the coming year,” announced Mandal, CEO of the fitness coaching app Future, “Our users at Future have already been asking their coaches to add gardening and landscaping activities into their routines because it’s easy to get and fit into their lifestyle.”

4 . Tennis is an incredibly mental sport.     1     But it is also an incredibly difficult sport to play well.

It is very easy to self-destruct (自我毁灭) when playing tennis if you let your expectations and ego get the better of you. So, simply playing the ball that is in front of you is the simplest way to approach the game, along with taking each point at a time.

That being said, it is much easier said than done.     2     Even if it is as simple as playing to your opponent’s backhand as much as possible, or aiming to hit as many cross court (对角线球) balls as you can, it is important to have a plan of attack if you want to be successful on the court.

3     You may have the best plan in the world, but if you aren’t performing well enough to execute it or your opponent cottons on (领悟) what you’re trying to do, you’ll need to adapt, improvise and overcome. Adapting to new conditions, court surfaces, balls and playing styles is all part of becoming a better tennis player!

4     This means you need to be incredibly resilient (坚韧的) to play good tennis and overcome hardship. Don’t be too much bothered by some points you lose. Just learn from your mistakes but not let them get you down.

Tennis is also about playing the big points well and understanding that not all points hold the same weight across the course of a match. Putting disappointment behind you and trying to play the next point with a positive attitude can be very difficult to do.     5

A.However, being flexible is also important.
B.You will always have to have some form of strategy.
C.However, it is a key part of becoming a better tennis player.
D.It can bring with it a whole host of physical and mental benefits.
E.Every backhand shot you hit is what you throw at your opponent.
F.Perhaps the most obvious benefits tennis offers are the physical ones.
G.The scoring system in tennis means you can win more points and still lose a match!

8 . What Are the Advantages of Team Sports?

The list of benefits from team sports is long, regardless of their talent or the team’s record. Here are just a few:

    1

Obviously, fitness is a big benefit. Many studies now show that our eating habits and lifestyle habits are making us less healthy. And exercise can give us some relief from these conditions. At the same time, playing a team sport lays the foundation for lifelong fitness habits.

Life skills

Equally important are the non-athletic skills that sports build. “There is a lot you can learn in sports that you will use in the rest of your life,” explains John Duffy, a Chicago-area psychologist. “You learn to play on a team.    2    . And you learn to be gracious when you win and when you lose.”

Academic (学术的) success

Research shows that schools with strong athletic programs have higher test scores and lower drop-out rates.     3    . And they also have self-reported higher education aspirations (抱负), diligence in homework completion and lower absenteeism.

Teamwork

In team sports, teammates learn to respect each other and encourage everyone to do their best.     4    .

Additional benefits for females

5    The Women’s Sports Foundation reports that girls who participate in team sports are more likely to have a positive outlook on their bodies.

A.Fitness
B.Achievability
C.It’s also about showing respect for the teammates
D.Meanwhile, female athletes have additional advantages
E.You learn to handle challenges and deal with difficulties
F.Everyone learns to work together because it is what’s best for the team
G.Students who play team sports are more likely to graduate than those who don’t

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了研究表明跑步后人们会感觉很好,其真正的原因可能是内源性大麻素。

10 . Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.

But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (内啡肽) —chemicals in the body that cause happiness—are behind the so-called “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.

According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.

To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety. But after being given a drug to block their endorphins, the mice’s behavior didn’t seem to change. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, their runners’ high symptoms seemed to fade.

“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifchacker.

Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety. The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes (开药 方) exercise to patients who are suffering from depression. “Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can improve your mood if you have depression, and its especially useful for people with mild to moderate (中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.

It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is to put on our running shoes.

1. What did scientists from German universities recently discover?
A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.
D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one’s mood.
2. Why did the scientists give mice drugs in their experiment?
A.To find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms.
B.To see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high.
C.To identify what is responsible for the runner’s high.
D.To test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released.
3. What does the underlined word “notion” mean?
A.Effect.B.Goal.C.Opinion.D.Question
4. What can we know about regular workouts according to the UK’s National Health Service?
A.They can help ease depression symptoms.
B.They are the best way to treat depression.
C.They only work for those with serious depression.
D.They can help people completely recover from depression.
