2 . Every community has an ice cream shop, but not every shop owner has a special task. When Charles opened the shop, he had a goal in his mind. “My goal is to treat people as a family member and to have a positive influence on my community,” he said.
So his shop soon got a lot of customers. Ordinary customers just came to taste their favorite flavors (口味). Some of them bought other things to support the store. Charles organized activities, such as reading stories, and providing some other free services for children in return. Sometimes, Charles offered ice cream for free. “You know when they come in, you can see some children with snacks, and some children don’t, so I’m not going to let them disappointed. I just want to do something positive.”
One day, Nicole, one of his visitors, noticed Charles giving children free ice cream. She was surprised to hear that Charles was doing so for a long time. She came back and handed him an envelope with $100 one day. Charles was moved by Nicole’s act, and he posted it on the Internet. The friendly acts of Charles and Nicole also inspired (激励) other ice cream owners in the nearby community to provide free ice cream for children.
“In such a large community, whether you do something negative or positive, everything is easy to propagate (宣传),” Charles said. “We should do what we can to help each other, do something positive, and let our kindness pass on the fire.”

Jack: I was walking home when I heard a loud sound coming from under a tree. I saw a dog sitting there looking sad. When I saw the bag of dog toys, I realized it had been abandoned (遗弃). I thought it probably wasn’t a good idea to deal with it by myself, so I called the rescue home. |
Anita: I was taking out the rubbish when I heard a sound. A tiny cat ran out. It looked thin, so I brought it home and gave it some water and food. I took it to the vet (兽医) who called the local cat rescue centre. They didn’t have space for the cat and asked me if I could keep it until they could find it a new home. I took care of it for two weeks until it went to live with an elderly couple. |
Jane: I was volunteering at a beach in Costa Rica. One afternoon I noticed a turtle which hadn’t moved for a long time. I got close to it ________, trying not to frighten it. I saw it had a ring of plastic stuck around its neck and was having difficulty breathing. I lifted it gently into a box and went to the animal rescue centre. The worker there cut the plastic off and treated its wound. At that time. I thought about what I should do to avoid this. Maybe I should start with the plastics in my daily life. |
