1 . The announcement that Donn had reached middle age came quietly and secretly without warning. Donna, at 42 years old, was in perfect health. She was fit, well-dressed, and ate only the healthiest of foods, avoiding soda and candy. She was still asked for her identification when buying wine at the grocery store. She ran several miles every day; in local road races, she was known for beating people half her age.
“Forty is the new twenty!” her friends would say of Donna’s seeming agelessness.
Donna heard the quip (俏皮话) so often that a part of her believed that this aging thing was surely only for other people.
But that all changed during what should have been a fairly common event: a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew her driver’s license.
“Name?” the clerk asked, without looking up. Donna replied.
“Address?” Donna gave to her.
“Look through there, please,” The clerk pointed to an eye-testing screen hanging on the white wall. “Read the first four lines,” she continued.
Donna pushed her head against the equipment. “Go ahead.” The clerk added.
Donna was confused suddenly! Why was everything unclear?
“I think the glass is dirty,” Donna said, searching the desk for a tissue to wipe off the lens (镜头).
“It’s not dirty,” the clerk said, her voice filed with pride and anger. “There must be some problem,” Donna said, pressing her head against the machine once more.
“Madam, do you wear glasses?”
“No, no, I don’t,” Donna responded, a little embarrassed now, as other people in the room began turning to see what was going on.
The clerk looked down at Donn’s old license and back up at her. “Welcome to middle age, Madam. Come back when you’ve had an eye exam and gotten glasses.”

6 . By the year 2050, a fifth of the world’s cities will experience unprecedented climate conditions and environments that currently don’t exist in any major cities, according to new research. A team of scientists at the Crowther Lab in Switzerland produced the report, which described the climate for 520 major cities 30 years in the future.
The results showed that 77 percent of the world’s cities will experience a surprising change in climate conditions by 2050, and 22 percent of the 520 cities will see conditions that are not currently experienced by any existing major cities.
In China in 2050, the climate of Xi’an, in Shanxi province, will be similar to that of current day Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho in southern Africa, with the maximum temperature of the warmest month likely to increase by 4.59℃. Chongqing in southwest China will resemble the climate of Swaziland capital Mbabane, as the warmest temperature is predicted to rise by 5.1℃.
Scientists predict summers in Europe will get warmer by an average of 3.5℃ and European winters will see temperature rises of 4.7℃. London’s climate will be more similar lo Barcelona, and Madrid’s to Marrakech.
The Crowther Lab hopes the analysis will motivate decision-makers to take necessary steps to prevent or address some of the climate effects due to the threat of climate change. The report also found that cities in tropical regions will experience smaller changes in average temperature but will be controlled by shifts in rainfall regimes. This may lead to a noticeable increase in unexpected events, and severe droughts.
“Across all scientific fields, the greatest challenge in climate science is no longer the precise measurement of climate change impacts, but inspiring people to picture is actual effects in order to motivate action,” said Tom Crowther, senior scientist und founder of the Crowther Lab.

7 . National Geographic Exhibit "Titanic: The Untold Story"
The National Geographic Museum is always an interesting and educational place to visit. The admission isn't free but is definitely worthwhile for unique exhibits like this. We'll be taking a self-guided tour hut there may also he museum staff on hand.
About the exhibition
On this exhibition, you will be surprised to find that the sunken Titanic was discovered by Robert Ballard, who was then carrying out a top secret Cold War mission(任务). In 1985,Ballard’s mission was to dive to depths of 9,800 feet using a camera system called Argo to find and document the exploded remains of the submarine (潜艇) Scorpion. The objective of the mission was to gain evidence to determine what led to her loss. After concluding his successful investigations,Ballard used the final 12 days of his expedition to discover the remains of Titanic.
The exhibition — originally exhibited at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum — shows the history of the discovery from an entirely new angle. Not only are visitors exposed to the historical events that led to the ship’s finding, but they can hear the fascinating stories of some of the passengers on board the ship. In addition to items borrowed from families of the survivors that have not been reunited since the night the ship sank in 1912, the exhibition contains those from the rich collections of the National Archives and the 20th Century Fox Archives. There are also movie sets and clothes worn by actors from the 1997 movie Titanic.

While driving, I sensed something wrong with my car. Pulling into the first parking lot I found, I stopped it and climbed out to assess the situation. My heart sank as I discovered that one of my rear(后面的) tires was flat.
I'd bought the secondhand car several months before, but it didn't include a spare tire. Although I knew I needed to purchase one, my schedule was so tight that I hadn't done it yet. Because I was working full-time in the emergency room at a local hospital and taking evening classes at a university fifty miles away.
Now here I was, alone forty miles from home. In those days, cell phones were a luxury. I had no way to call for assistance.
My spirits grew darker the minute I checked the place where I had pulled over. No one was around, except a rusty, red truck. It was getting dark. I had two options: stay in my car until morning or start walking in hopes of finding a convenience store with a pay phone. Neither option appealed to me.
I about to grab my purse and set off on foot when a man came out from what seemed to be a law office. Pulling a set of keys from his pocket, he locked the office door, and then turned and saw me standing next to my car. I must have looked scared and confused as he headed straight toward me.
"Can I help you with anything?" he asked.
Judging from his appearance, I decided I could trust him.
"I have a flat tire but don't have a spare," I said, relieved to see him.
"I can help you remove the flat and then drive you to a tire shop to get it fixed," he said.
I remembered the cautionary(告诫的) words my parents had drilled into my head: Never get in a car with a stranger.
"That's okay," I said. "Thanks anyway."
