1 . Criticism from others can be difficult to take, especially if the person delivering the criticism isn’t exactly subtle(含蓄的)about it. So how should we deal with it?     1

Try to separate the criticism from the environment in which it was given.     2     However, you should also try to calmly look at what’s being said and see if there are clues for your personal growth. Pretend the person isn’t talking about you, and try to read between the lines.

3     This is where you listen and say“okay, that makes sense, ”or“I can come up with a plan to do that. ”Remember, haters gonna hate, but even they sometimes hate for reasons worth considering. All you need to do is keep what’s applicable and ignore the rest.

Turn those useful opinions into goals.     4     If someone complains that your writing is too long, for example, set a to-do to remove the fat from your work. If your boss complains you always wait until the last minute to complete tasks, set your due-dates a day earlier than they’re really due, so you get to work sooner.

Adjust your attitude. You can do all of this and still get depressed when someone tells you how you can improve. Attitude is the key here.     5     It’s easier said than done, but knowing your strengths and being ready to hear and accept your weaknesses is the most powerful thing you can do.

A.Focus on the meaningful part of the criticism.
B.Look at criticism as a chance to grow and get better.
C.Here are some ways you can get benefits from criticism.
D.Vaw your reaction to criticism depending on its intention.
E.It’s important to never let the opportunity for criticism pass you by.
F.It’s normal to be defensive when criticized and to react accordingly.
G.Once you have specific, practical tips, turn them into measurable to-dos.

2 . When I was seven, my parents explained to me that my sister would be different.     1     But now I realize I see the world in a much different way, all thanks to her.

Throughout our lives, my sister has often got stared at because she has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), which makes her appear abnormal. There were times when I had to struggle with her.     2     I simply thought. “Everyone else is just staring and that is wrong. They should offer us help instead of staring at us like it’s a circus act (马戏表演).”

I had this in mind when I was traveling alone recently and saw a mother and a son with special needs at the airport gate.     3     They were heading towards the gate of their second departure of the day. The mother was obviously stressed out and trying to keep her son calm while some items were falling out of her un-zipped (拉开拉链的) backpack. The son was pulling strangers’clothes, and she appeared to be embarrassed about it. Then the boy began to scream, looking very scared and confused.

Some people gave the son and mother strange looks, the same kind of looks my sister and I would sometimes get.     4     I tried to help calm the boy down by assuring him he was going to see his grandmother as his mom kept telling him. When the boy finally calmed down, I returned to my seat. At the time, an older gentleman turned around and said to me. “I thought about doing what you did, but I just thought about it. You did it.”

To be honest. I didn’t even really regard what I did as something different or good.     5

A.They had got off another plane.
B.People would stare at us even more.
C.I don’t know what I should do to help.
D.But I went up and asked if I could lend a hand.
E.I just consider it as the only choice in that situation.
F.I was so angry that I shouted loudly at the strangers.
G.I had no idea what impact she would have on my daily life.

Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.

It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost €6,000.

Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about €5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.

Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.

Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem?" he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra €1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. €1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

6 . Psychologists have long believed that human beings have a fairly consistent “negativity bias(消极偏见)” that leads us to pay more attention to negative thoughts, feelings and events than to positive ones.     1    There is a positive explanation for the question. After all, we are motivated to grow after a misstep. However, we can't abandon ourselves to the negativity bias forever. How?     2

Practice Positivity. Like your muscles, your thought patterns respond to how they are used and exercised. You don't have to erase the negativity bias from your mind.     3    For example, set calendar reminders throughout your day to convey an expression of gratitude or simply adjust your body language so you're holding yourself with strength and confidence.

4    We're living in a time of pandemic or financial stress and deep division. Our negativity biases call our attention toward those realities. But we are well served to also see the opportunities in this moment:Maybe there's a home project we otherwise wouldn't have found time to tackle.

Ask for Positive Reminders. Get in the habit of checking in with people who are with you when goodness finds you today. Mention to them, “That is an unexpected bit of praise from the boss, isn't it?”     5    And who knows, you may help your friend, family member or coworker have a more positive day as well!

A.Try the following suggested ideas.
B.Redefine negativity as an opportunity.
C.Instead, practice your positive lifestyle.
D.Its negative influence can never be avoided.
E.Why and how does this phenomenon happen?
F.How do you handle it as you try to live with more positivity?
G.Asking others to confirm your positive insights can facilitate your positivity.

It was just before 8 am, October 17. Pam Bales stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail(小路). She planned a six-hour climbing hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every accident, including clothes, heat packs, a bottle of hot chocolate…And she intended to walk alone. A piece of paper on the dashboard of her car detailed her trip: start up Jewell Trail and return to her car before some forecasted bad weather arrives. Pam always left her hiking plans in her car. She was a volunteer on the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team.

At 10:30 am, the weather was showing its teeth. Pam added even more clothes to protect herself from the cold winds and fog. Then she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She'd been following faint tracks all day and hadn't given them much thought, because so many people climbed Jewell Trail. But these, she realised, had been made by a pair of trainers.

By 11 am, Pam was getting cold, despite moving fast. She put on an extra top. Good thing I packed heavy, she thought. She decided to abandon her plan. Returning to her car was a requirement. Strong gusts of wind attacked her back and left side and the only thing keeping her on Gulfside Trail was the tracks in the snow. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet, her eyes searching for some type of shelter, the tracks made a hard left-hand turn off the trail.

All of a sudden, she felt alarmed. She was sure the hiker could lose their way and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf. Pam followed the tracks carefully. She rounded a corner and saw a man sitting motionless beside a stone. He stared in the direction of Great Gulf. She approached him. His head was bare. He looked soaking wet. Thick frost covered his jacket. As his eyes tracked her slowly, he barely turned his head.

10 . The word "emoji" comes from Japanese, literally meaning "picture character".    1     They   come in different categories, such as faces and people, plants and animals, and food and drink.

When first introduced in Japan in 1999, emojis were limited to 176 simple designs. Now there are more than 3,000 emojis. Due to their popularity, the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2015 was a pictograph      instead of a traditional word.

In today’s world, emojis have become   more   and   more   popular.    2     People like   them because they add emotional meanings, and are quick and easy to use. With a smiling or sad face added to a message or post, your reader can "see" your facial expression while reading your words.

3     For instance, if your friend is moving across the country, you may just send them a string of crying faces to express your sadness over your separation.

4     A Shakespeare series for young readers has taken William   Shakespeare’s popular   plays and replaced some words with textspeak and emojis. The intention of these adaptations is to make the classics more accessible to young readers. Some people, however, believe that these new versions have taken away the heart and soul of Shakespeare’s plays.

As we can see, emojis have a tendency to pop up all over the place. Users of emojis say that they facilitate the way we communicate and express ourselves. But this makes others, especially educators, worry that we are losing the ability to communicate properly using the written word, or even the spoken word. After all, how many of us today would rather send a message packed with emojis than make a telephone call?    5     On that day, emojis will have become a real pictorial "language". But, for now, maybe it’s best that we just enjoy using them.

A.Maybe emojis’ best days are ahead.
B.The most popular emojis are absolute classics.
C.The use of emojis has even spread to classical literature.
D.Perhaps people will one day choose to communicate in pictures.
E.It seems that emojis have clear advantages over written language.
F.Emojis are small symbols representing ideas, emotions or feelings.
G.Emojis can also help people express their feelings when they can’t find the appropriate words.
