Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.
It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost €6,000.
Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about €5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.
Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.
Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem?" he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra €1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. €1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

It was just before 8 am, October 17. Pam Bales stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail(小路). She planned a six-hour climbing hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every accident, including clothes, heat packs, a bottle of hot chocolate…And she intended to walk alone. A piece of paper on the dashboard of her car detailed her trip: start up Jewell Trail and return to her car before some forecasted bad weather arrives. Pam always left her hiking plans in her car. She was a volunteer on the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team.
At 10:30 am, the weather was showing its teeth. Pam added even more clothes to protect herself from the cold winds and fog. Then she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She'd been following faint tracks all day and hadn't given them much thought, because so many people climbed Jewell Trail. But these, she realised, had been made by a pair of trainers.
By 11 am, Pam was getting cold, despite moving fast. She put on an extra top. Good thing I packed heavy, she thought. She decided to abandon her plan. Returning to her car was a requirement. Strong gusts of wind attacked her back and left side and the only thing keeping her on Gulfside Trail was the tracks in the snow. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet, her eyes searching for some type of shelter, the tracks made a hard left-hand turn off the trail.
All of a sudden, she felt alarmed. She was sure the hiker could lose their way and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf. Pam followed the tracks carefully. She rounded a corner and saw a man sitting motionless beside a stone. He stared in the direction of Great Gulf. She approached him. His head was bare. He looked soaking wet. Thick frost covered his jacket. As his eyes tracked her slowly, he barely turned his head.

10 . The word "emoji" comes from Japanese, literally meaning "picture character".
When first introduced in Japan in 1999, emojis were limited to 176 simple designs. Now there are more than 3,000 emojis. Due to their popularity, the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2015 was a pictograph instead of a traditional word.
In today’s world, emojis have become more and more popular.
As we can see, emojis have a tendency to pop up all over the place. Users of emojis say that they facilitate the way we communicate and express ourselves. But this makes others, especially educators, worry that we are losing the ability to communicate properly using the written word, or even the spoken word. After all, how many of us today would rather send a message packed with emojis than make a telephone call?
A.Maybe emojis’ best days are ahead. |
B.The most popular emojis are absolute classics. |
C.The use of emojis has even spread to classical literature. |
D.Perhaps people will one day choose to communicate in pictures. |
E.It seems that emojis have clear advantages over written language. |
