文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了自行车爱好者Annette Kruger成立非营利性组织Bikeygees,让柏林的女性体验骑自行车带来的健康益处和独立性。

“It’s like riding a bike” is a common comment when you want to remind someone that it’s hard to forget a basic skill. But what if you don’t know how to ride a bike?

This was something Annette Kruger, an avid (热衷的) cyclist, saw that was true for many women in Berlin, including refugees, who’d moved to there. Whether they weren’t allowed or didn’t have the opportunity to learn, these women had never experienced the health benefits and independence that cycling offers.

That is why, seven years ago, Kruger started Bikeygees, a non-profit organization focused on teaching women to ride a bike. The group members gather for two hours for training sessions every week. Advanced riders can borrow bikes and helmets for free to practise on their own.

The group also teaches women how to fix bikes, instilling (逐步培养) a sense of self-sufficiency, says Kruger. If they can do bike repairs, ride and learn the German rules of the road, they are awarded with a bike kit, including a bike, a helmet, a bike lock and bike tools. More than 500 bikes have been donated so far, and Kruger says the goal is to eventually provide all participants with their own bikes. To date, the group has taught more than 1,400 women and has met in more than 20 locations within Germany, including in emergency shelters.

Participants have said that riding a bike allows them not only freedom of movement — some of the women use them to bring their children to school — but also hope for the future. Kruger says that she can see the impact that concentrating on a new skill has on the women. “We can’t replace what someone lost in their life, but we can offer something new. The success is measured in the smiles of the riders when they conquer another bike skill.” She recalls one student in her 60s who continued to practice through a bitter winter. She said, “This is a dream for me. I have been waiting my whole life to do this.”

1. What did the women in Berlin obtain from Bikeygees?
A.Opportunities to learn German.B.Chances to move away from Berlin.
C.Attention to their living conditions.D.Fitness and freedom to get around.
2. What do we learn about the Bikeygees project?
A.It becomes increasingly popular.B.It has made large profits.
C.It offers more bikes than needed.D.It allows beginners to practise individually.
3. Which is a benefit for the participants from the last paragraph?
A.A fund for women.B.The capacity to earn money.
C.The freedom of their children.D.A prospect of future life.
4. Which of the following best describes Annette Kruger?
A.Caring.B.Innocent.C.Humorous.D.Honest.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。为什么电影的时长变得越来越长,文章分析了出现这种现象的原因。

Want to know what is coming soon to a cinema near you? Probably not a 1.5-hour-long movie, as in the old days. On October 20th comes Killers of the Flower Moon. At nearly three and a half hours, its length is nearly double that of the average film last year. Even movie fans struggle to concentrate for that long and some viewers even nod off. Afterwards there is a mad dash for the toilets. When does watching a film become such a slog?

The Economist analyzed over 100,000 feature films released internationally since the 1930s, the start of Hollywood’s golden age, using data from IMDb, a movie database. The average length of productions rose by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47 minutes in 2022. For the ten most-popular titles, the average length grew to around two and a half hours in 2022, nearly 50% higher than in the 1930s.

One driver of this trend is that studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual property (知识产权), but they are competing with streaming platforms for eyeballs. The hope is that a spectacular, drawn-out “event” movie will draw audiences away from the small screen and into cinemas. This approach has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame Marvel’s three-hour superhero masterpieces, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019. Last year long movies series made up most of the highest-grossing films in America.

Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing influence. Who would dare tell the likes of Mr. Nolan to cut out his masterpieces? Moreover, streaming platforms, which do not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause whenever they like, may attract big names by promising them sufficient fund and creative freedom. Netflix funded and released three-hour The Irishman in 2019, a film that would have benefited from a decisive editor, Irish or otherwise.

1. The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___.
A.pleasureB.effortC.conflictD.feast
2. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.The average length affects the popularity of films.
B.Great advances have been made in film industry.
C.Hollywood starts a golden age of feature films.
D.The average duration of movies has stretched.
3. What sets the trend of longer movies?
A.Competition for the target audience.B.Thirst for more classic productions.
C.Influence of streaming platforms.D.Preference for decisive editors.
4. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A.Movie EnthusiastsB.Movie Marathons
C.Movie ProductionD.Movie Influence

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要通过研究基因与饮食习惯之间的联系,探讨了基因对个体饮食选择和健康状况的影响。

You are what you eat-and what you eat may be encoded in your DNA. Studies have indicated that your genes play a role in determining the foods you find delicious or disgusting. But exactly how big a role they play has been difficult to figure out. “Everything has a genetic component. even if it’s small, ”says Joanne Cole, a geneticist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “We know that there is some genetic contribution to why we eat the foods we eat Can we take the next step and actually locate the regions in the genome (基因)?”

New research led by Cole has gotten a step closer. Through a large-scale genomics analysis, her team has identified 481 genome regions that were directly linked to dietary patterns and food preferences. The findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, were presented last month at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual conference.

The team based the new study on a 2020 Nature Communications study by Cole and her colleagues that used data from the U. K. Biobank, a public database of the genetic and health information of 500, 000 participants. By scanning genomes, the new analysis was able to identify 194 regions associated with dietary patterns and 287 linked to specific foods such as fruit, cheese, fish, tea and alcohol Further understanding how genetics impact how we eat could reveal differences in nutritional needs or disease risks.

“One of the problems with a lot of these genomics studies is that they’re very small. They don’t have enough people to really be able to identify genes in ways that are credible. This study had a huge group of people, so it’s really powerful. ” says Monica Dus, a geneticist at the University of Michigan. “The other thing that I thought was really great is that there are so many different traits that they’re measuring related to diet including cholesterol (胆固醇). the body and socioeconomic backgrounds. ” As the research advances. Dus says, such genome analysis could potentially assist health care providers and even policymakers to address larger issues that affect food access and health.

It’s definitely true that it may contribute to making sure there aren’t food deserts-areas which have limited access to fresh, healthy and affordable food-or to making sure that there’s a higher minimum wage so that everyone can afford to eat, although the journey ahead remains lengthy and challenging

1. How did researchers conduct the present study?
A.By involving a substantial number of participants.
B.By directly analyzing the data from a public database.
C.By building on a previous study based on large-scale data.
D.By identifying genome regions associated with dietary patterns
2. Which statement will Monica Dus probably agree with?
A.Powerful participants were involved in the current study.
B.The methods employed for the previous studies were credible
C.The genome analyses have helped address larger social issues.
D.Various features linked to diet were considered in the present study.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards the present study?
A.CriticalB.Optimistic.C.SkepticalD.Indifferent.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The benefits of latest large-scale diet-related genome analyses.
B.The contribution of genes to diet patterns and food preferences.
C.The significance of a newly published diet-related genome discovery.
D.The introduction of a research on identifying diet-related genome regions.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何追求自己的梦想提出了一些建议。

Pursue Your Dreams Today, Not Tomorrow

Have you caught yourself daydreaming about your dreams? We often postpone our dreams, trapped in a cycle of delay. But why wait?     1     You don’t have to take a huge, life-changing step. You can take minute steps toward a brighter future. And start right now.

2     If you never try, you’re going to be weighed down by your regrets. You’re always going to wonder how your life would’ve turned out if you actually took a chance on yourself. Don’t let your future self be disappointed by your present self.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many people have warned you that you’re never going to succeed. Even the most successful people have had their hesitations about whether they had what it took to make it in their field.    3     Embrace a mindset of determination, knowing that success is within your reach.

At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction. If you allow your fear to get the best of you, you’re never going to forgive yourself.    4    . It’s what you would encourage your friends to do, so why aren’t you giving yourself that same push?

Sometimes, following your passion means spending a lot of your time each day. It may require making slight adjustments to your schedule, but you don’t have to sacrifice everything to follow your hearts. Try to strike a balance between your current life and your dreams.    5

Pursue your dreams now, even though that means you might need to break out of your comfort zone, and even though it means entering the unknown.

A.Ask yourself what would be worse.
B.Starting small is completely acceptable.
C.You owe it to yourself to go after your dreams.
D.New opportunities may lead to personal growth.
E.If things go well, you can gradually make further shifts.
F.You need to move past your insecurities and explore your full potential.
G.Hard as it is, it’s crucial to wave off the doubts in the back of your mind.

Many years ago I stepped into a bookstore in Cincinnati in search of some books that I wanted. While I was there,a poor little boy, about twelve, came in to ask whether they had a world atlas(地图册) for sell.

“Yes. It costs one dollar,” replied the salesman. “I have only sixty-two cents,” the boy said.

“Would you let me have it and wait a little while for the rest of the money?” His request being refused, the boy left. I followed him. “And what now?” I asked.

“I shall try another place, sir.”

“Do you mind if I go too and see how you succeed?”

“If you like,” he said in surprise.

Four times I saw the look on the boy’s face turn to disappointment. But he continued. When we entered the fifth store, he told the bookseller what had happened. When asked why he wanted the atlas so much, the boy said, “My father was a sailor, but he is dead.I want to know about the places he used to go to and I’m going to be a sailor, too.”

Deeply touched, the bookseller sold the boy an atlas and presented him with a new pencil for his perseverance (毅力). I also gave him two dollars for other books he wanted. Tears in his eyes, he told us his name is William Hartley. He hoped to repay us some day.

Many years later, I left for Liverpool by water. At the end of the journey, there came a terrible storm and the ship was in trouble. A great leak was filling the ship with water. The crew was made up of strong and able men. But after fighting for one whole night with the water still flowing in, the sailors gave up desperately.

But the captain didn’t give up. He ordered every man to his position and went below to look for the leak. As he passed me, I asked whether there was any hope of saving the ship. He looked at me, firmly saying “Yes, sir. As long as one inch of this ship remains above water, there is hope.”
