文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了世界各地的人们回馈社会的一些创新方式。

In today’s cost-of-living crisis, the demand on charities is greater than ever. Here are a dozen innovative ways people around the world are giving back.

Commu App, Finland

How do people wanting to volunteer connect with groups needing help? In 2021 in Finland, three 20-something entrepreneurs founded Commu, an app that makes it easy for individuals to offer help to those in need or to ask for help in their communities. It works in Finnish, English, Ukrainian, German and Norwegian and features a special area on the app that focuses on the needs of Ukrainian refugees (难民) in Finland.

Frigos Solidaires, France

Imagine if those in need could help themselves to food with anonymity (匿名) and dignity. Solidarity Fridges was started with that aim by Dounia Mebtoul, a young restaurateur in Paris. Now, 130 fridges installed in front of places such as shops and schools offer free food to the hungry across France.

Donation Dollar, Australia

Motivating people to donate is the objective of a unique one-dollar coin created by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM). Featuring a green centre with a gold ripple design, the coin reminds people who find it in their change to donate it to charity. It estimates that by the end of last year, about $2 million had been donated to charities and people or businesses in need.

Stuff A Bus, Canada

In Edmonton, the transit service parks vehicles in front of supermarkets for its annual “Stuff a Bus” campaign each November. Volunteers collect food and cash donations from shoppers to fill buses heading for food banks. Since 1995, the campaign has collected 553,000 kilograms of food and roughly half a million dollars for those in need.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主人公创办了非盈利组织A Doll Like Me,制作布娃娃帮助儿童度过艰难岁月。

Amy Jandrisevits knows the value of a good doll. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she told The Today Show. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those dolls. But for the kids missing a limb or who had lost their hair, there were none they could relate to.

So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was transgender, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially challenging period and eventually started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me. “It’s hard to tell a kid that they are perfect the way they are and to build self-esteem that way, yet never give them anything that looks like them.” she says.

Jandrisevits went about changing that. She crafted a doll by hand — using fabric, stitching, and markers — that resembled her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo online of the happy child and doll, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who was missing a leg.

Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks, facial deformities (畸形)— in short, a doll that looked like them. It takes her as long as seven hours to craft each one. A GoFundMe page helps her offset costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a single doll since she began her nonprofit.

In all, she’s made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandrisevits is unbowed. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, medical issue, or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.”

1. What’s the value of a good doll to the sick kids according to Jandrisevits?
A.Hiding their sadness.B.Keeping them company.
C.Restoring their physical health.D.Helping kids accept themselves.
2. What does the underlined part “changing that” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Making perfect dolls for children.B.Offering kids dolls to identify with.
C.Telling troubled kids to build self-esteem.D.Encouraging kids to overcome difficulties.
3. What can we infer about dolls from the last two paragraphs?
A.The tailor-made dolls are in short supply.
B.Jandrisevits makes dolls at her own expense.
C.The dolls are only crafted for disabled children.
D.It is a piece of cake for Jandrisevits to craft a doll.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To share how to launch a nonprofit.
B.To appeal for donations to sick kids.
C.To highlight the healing power of dolls.
D.To publicize a lady’s story of crafting dolls for kids.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,塑料中含有内分泌干扰物,如邻苯二甲酸二环己酯(DCHP),父代暴露于这种物质可能导致后代代谢健康问题。

Plastic, which is now common, contains endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs (内分泌干扰物), that has been linked to increased risk of many chronic diseases. Parental exposure to EDCs, for example, has been shown to cause metabolic (新陈代谢的) disorders, including obesity and diabetes, in the later generations.

Led by Changcheng Zhou, a professor of biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of California, the researchers investigated the impact of fathers’ exposure to a phthalate called dicyclohexyl phthalate, or DCHP (邻苯二甲酸二环己酯), on the metabolic health of first generation (F1) and second generation (F2) in mice. Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic more durable.

The researchers found that fathers’ DCHP exposure for four weeks led to high insulin (胰岛素) resistance and impaired insulin signaling in F1. The same effect, but weaker, was seen in F2 .

“We found fathers’ exposure to EDCs may have intergenerational and transgenerational detrimental effects on the metabolic health of their later generations, ”Zhou said. “To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to demonstrate this.”

In the case of fathers’ exposure in the study, intergenerational effects are changes that occur due to direct exposure to a stressor, such as exposure to DCHP of fathers (F0 generation) and his F1 generation. Transgenerational effects are changes passed down to later generations that are not directly exposed to the stressor (for example, F2 generation).

“This suggests that fathers’ DCHP exposure can lead to sex-specific transgenerational effects on the metabolic health of their later generations,” Zhou said.

Zhou stressed that the impact of exposure to DCHP on human health is not well understood, even though DCHP is widely used in a variety of plastic products and has been detected in food, water, and indoor particulate matter.

“It’s best to minimize our use of plastic products,” Zhou said. “This can also help reduce plastic pollution, one of our most pressing environmental issues.”

1. Why are phthalates added to plastic?
A.To beautify it. B.To make it long-lasting.
C.To reduce its cost. D.To increase its weight.
2. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Negative. B.External. C.Distinct. D.Adventurous.
3. What did Zhou advise people to do?
A.Bury plastic waste. B.Watch out for the food they eat.
C.Use fewest plastic products. D.Never produce plastic products.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Plastic contains endocrine disrupting chemicals
B.Plastic pollution is a pressing environmental issue
C.DCHP is widely used in a variety of plastic products
D.Chemicals in plastic may impact two generations’ health

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。这篇文章主要介绍了面孔失认症的研究结果和诊断标准。

Face blindness, a mystifying condition that can trick us into believing we recognize people we’ve never met or make us fail to recognize those we have, has been previously estimated to affect between 2 and 2.5 percent of people in the world. Now, a new study by researchers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the VA Boston Healthcare System is providing fresh insights into the disorder, suggesting it may be more common than currently believed.

Published in February 2023 in Cortex, the study findings indicate that as many as one in 33 people may meet the criteria for face blindness, or prosopagnosia (面孔失认症).“This translates to more than 10 million Americans,” the research team said.

The study found similar face-matching performance between people diagnosed with prosopagnosia using stricter vs looser criteria, suggesting that diagnostic criteria should be expanded to be more inclusive. That could lead to new diagnoses among millions who may have the disorder but don’t realize it.

The study results are based on a web-based questionnaire and tests administered to 3,341 individuals.First, the researchers asked participants whether they experience difficulties recognizing faces in their everyday lives. Then they administered two objective tests to determine whether they had difficulties learning new faces or recognizing highly familiar famous faces.

The results showed that 31 individuals out of the 3,341 had major prosopagnosia, while 72 of the 3,341 had a milder form. The researchers also observed that there were no neatly divided separate groups of people with poor or good ability to recognize faces. Rather, the ability to recognize faces appeared to lie on a continuum (连续体).

Finally, the researchers compared face-matching scores among people with prosopagnosia diagnosed using different criteria and found that using stricter diagnostic cutoffs did not correspond with lower face-matching scores.

In the new study, the researchers provide diagnostic suggestions for identifying mild and major forms of prosopagnosia based on guidelines for major and mild neurocognitive disorders in the DSM5, the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

1. Which of the following indicates a person has face blindness?
A.Failing to identify his belongings.
B.Being able to recognize his friends.
C.Mistaking a stranger for an acquaintance.
D.Misunderstanding ones’ facial expressions.
2. What question is sure to be included in the questionnaire?
A.Do you have trouble recognizing faces?
B.Do you know what face blindness means?
C.Do you know anybody with face blindness?
D.Do you experience difficulties in everyday life?
3. What do we know about the DSM5?
A.It came up based on the new study.
B.It has experienced four revisions.
C.It is only used to identify face blindness.
D.It participated in and funded the new study.
4. Where is the text most likely from?
A.A fiction novel. B.A fashion website.
C.A health brochure. D.A science magazine.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了夏季游泳时的安全防范措施。

Summer is the swimming season. As fun as a swimming pool can be, it’s also a major safety risk if you don’t take the appropriate precautions (预防措施). Here are some tips for a safe swimming season.

1     If children or inexperienced swimmers are in the pool, it’s very important to have close supervision. Supervisors should be an adult who can swim well and knows how to save others in a swimming pool. They mustn’t be distracted with their cellphone, or a conversation with another adult. They must take that role very seriously.     2    . More children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning than any other causes of death.

Keep a variety of flotation devices in and around the pool like a life jacket plus pool noodles or a paddle board. That helps when accidents happen.     3    .

Supervisors should also learn basic CPR.

The steps are:

1. Place the person on his back and gently lift his chin and tilt (倾斜) his head back.

2. Place one hand over the other, place them over the patient’s breastbone and administer 30 chest presses.

3. Pinch their nose and place your mouth tightly over their mouth and administer two short breaths

Start again until the patient starts breathing.

4     Emergency department staff sometimes see significant head injuries and spinal cord injuries that come from careless diving. This happens more among teenagers and young adults. Prevent this by making sure people are only using existing diving boards that are designed to dive into deep water.

Another risk is a condition called “dry drowning”. This happens after a near-drowning event in which water gets into someone’s lungs.     5    . Call 120 or go to the emergency department right away. This is very rare, but can be fatal (致命的).

A.Drowning can happen in an instant
B.Adults should watch over the safety
C.Drowning isn’t the only danger with pools
D.Pool owners should be sure to have a fence around their pool
E.Call for help and start administering CPR as quickly as possible
F.A drowning person having something to grab can get out of the pool quickly
G.That means the airway is closed off and can’t provide someone with enough oxygen

A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.

So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation because mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.

I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us, their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky. I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.

The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged. I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.

I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
