Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they express regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp comers of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid (避免) those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. it’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say, “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality (可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance (保障) for my emotional well-being.
1. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated. |
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. |
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. |
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips (绊倒) someone. |
A.To keep her appointment with the eye doctor. |
B.To meet her father who was already an old man. |
C.To join in the holiday celebration of the company. |
D.To finish her work before the deadline approached. |
A.given up. | B.Lacked. | C.Avoided. | D.Wasted. |
A.The Emotional Well-being | B.The Two Saddest Words |
C.The Most Useful Rule | D.The Peace of Mind |

In internships (实习期) and jobs that I, now a career woman, have ever had, I’ve watched professionals, experienced and brand-new alike, conduct interviews or present in meetings and many of them appear unprepared and lack confidence. I think they would all benefit from an acting class.
A central technique an acting class can equip you with is improvisation (即兴表演). Essentially, skills such as the improvisation principle of “Yes, and …” are beneficial for thinking on your feet. When someone suggests a new idea, you say “yes” and run with the suggestion. A professional familiar with this technique can entertain and value the contributions of others, promoting a free-flowing exchange of ideas, which inspires a positive, creative spirit that the corporate world longs for.
Both college students and professionals might benefit from the voice and movement training. I used to be afraid of the voice and movement part of acting class. My acting teacher would make us do push-ups and yoga. Then, we’d stand up and moan (呻吟) with varying degrees of voices. I hated this, and lots of other people do, too. But the product of this training is an individual who stands tall and speaks clearly and loudly. Plus, I still use the stretches and warm-ups from class to calm my nerves before presentations.
As an actor, you are a student of human behavior. With that, when you receive a text, you explore your character. For example, if you’re playing a villain (反派角色), you have to approach your character from where it stands. Such an outlook makes for a wonderful leader, one that understands coworkers’ situations and treats them with politeness and understanding.
I’ve borne countless “What are you going to do with a theater degree?” speeches from family and friends. But ultimately, these soft skills are incredibly valuable for young professionals. Acting training will set you apart from the pack.
1. What effect does the principle of “Yes, and …” have on professionals following it?A.It generates positive suggestions. | B.It brings about smooth interaction. |
C.It offers them good entertainment value. | D.It helps them recognize their own contribution. |
A.She is still very nervous of her acting teacher. |
B.She is addicted to working on her physical fitness. |
C.The training has made her braver and more patient. |
D.The training has enhanced her presentation abilities. |
A.It is a big challenge for most of the student actors. |
B.It makes the study of human behavior much easier. |
C.It can help people to put themselves in others’ shoes. |
D.It may improve the relationship between coworkers. |
A.Take an acting class. | B.Pursue acting careers |
C.Obtain higher degrees. | D.Consult family and friends. |

Power often boosts an employee’s creativity because being powerful liberates the individual from restrictions. However, new research shows that employees who are not in positions of power can become more creative when given time to “warm up” to a task by engaging in the creative task more than once.
“This is important because when people with more power are able to express their creative ideas more than those with less power, which leads to a rich-get-richer dynamic that strengthens these power imbalances,” said Brian Lucas, assistant professor in the Cornell University. “Understanding ways to boost the creativity of lower power workers can help them find the right way to deal with this low-power disadvantage,” Lucas said.
Lucas and his colleagues conducted two studies to reach their conclusion. In the first study, they divided the creative idea generation session into two rounds consisting of a one-minute “warm up” followed by a second round in which the participants could take as long as they wanted.Participants were randomly assigned to a high-power condition or a low-power condition, and feelings of power were generated with a role manipulation (操纵) where participants were given a leadership role and control over resources (high power) or an employee role with no control over resources (low power). The study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the warm-up round. There was no difference, though, in creativity in the second round.
In the second study, the researchers gave them a different creative task and increased the number of rounds from two sessions to five, taking as long as they like to complete the task. Similar to the first study, the study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the first round. But the creativity of low-power individuals caught up to the creativity of the high-power individuals after the first round.
“The low-power warm-up effect suggests a simple intervention that empowers all employees to tap their creative potential and overcomes power imbalances in the workplace: when pursuing creative work, let employees warm up first,” Lucas said.
1. Why does Locus think it important to boost the creativity of lower power workers?A.It maintains power imbalances. |
B.It motivates their ambition to catch up. |
C.It creates a competitive work environment. |
D.It encourages a workplace with more equality. |
A.Through a creative task with time limits. |
B.Through providing them with different positions. |
C.Through a competition between leaders and employees. |
D.Through assigning them to different conditions intentionally. |
A.It had fewer rounds. | B.It involved more participants. |
C.Participants had a changed task. | D.Participants’ creativity gap became wider. |
A.Power tends to encourage creative ideas. |
B.Changing tasks boosts all the employees’ creativity. |
C.Warm-up time corrects creativity power imbalances. |
D.Low-power individuals outperform the high-power ones. |
