As I walked into the George Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theater, I felt as though I had stepped into a time machine. On the way to the traditional, old-timey box office, tons of vintage movie posters and the theater entrance made me feel like I was on Broadway. As everyone took their seats, an older gentleman who looked like he walked straight out of the 1920s gave the attendees a historical background of the film we were seeing-The Barker.

The film itself, which was released in 1928, is considered a “part-talkie”. Before films included synchronized (同步的) sound, films were played with live accompaniment and contained subtitles to add context. With the invention of synchronized sound, films slowly added talking dialogue in scenes throughout the film; these films were considered “part-talkies”.

The Barker, which explores the lives of carnival workers, is the talking debut (首次登场) of all of the main cast. The film was revolutionary not only for the technology but also for the actors. My film experience consists of mostly talkies, so when I finished The Barker, I felt like I witnessed something brand new for the first time.

The experience I had at Dryden Theater was unlike any movie-going experience I had ever had. The music, the film, and the atmosphere itself were completely unique! Since viewing films has gradually been switched to streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has both increased the accessibility of films and stripped us of reliance on a social experience to watch a movie-one that attending The Barker reminded me of.

“Barbenheimer”, a phenomenon that contrasts the obvious differences in the recently released movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, allowed us to return to the movie-going adventure. Finally, everyone wanted big screens and surround sound rather than the tiny screens in bedrooms. More importantly, we were all able to interact with a piece of content alongside other people. “Barbenheimer” brought back the pastime of going to the cinema-one that I think we should continue to engage in. I say we take a page out of the 1920s playbook and return to the cinema.

1. Who helped the audience know better about the historical background of The Barker?
A.A star who was cast in the movie.
B.A man who had a look of the past.
C.An elderly gentleman from the 1920s.
D.A staff member working at the box office.
2. Which of the following is true of “part-talkies”?
A.The Barker is a “part-talkie”.
B.“Part-talkies” are totally silent.
C.“Part-talkies” involve live accompaniment.
D.The films before The Barker are “part-talkies”.
3. What does the underlined word “stripped” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Accused.B.Informed.C.Robbed.D.Warned.
4. What does the author suggest?
A.Having more big screen experiences.
B.Interacting more with people around us.
C.Engaging in “Barbenheimer” and watching The Barker.
D.Reading more vintage playbooks before watching movies.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了最后一只旅鸽的死亡和旅鸽灭绝的原因,以及人们对此的担忧。

The most beloved bird in history may very well have been a 29-year-old pigeon by the name of Martha. It was the early 1900s, and Martha was at the height of her fame. Perched on her humble roost at the Cincinnati Zoo, she was an object of fascination to the thousands of visitors who lined up just to catch a glimpse. Martha may not have looked the part of an animal celebrity, but she was hardly average—in fact, she was the very definition of one of a kind. After the death of her companion George in 1910, Martha had become the world’s last-living passenger pigeon.

There was a time not long before when her kind accounted for more than a quarter of the birds in North America and may have been the most abundant bird species on the planet. Passenger pigeons used to travel at 60 miles an hour in flocks a mile wide and 300 miles long. Witnesses compared them to a train rumbling through a tunnel.

Ironically, the passenger pigeons’ very abundance may have spelled their doom. An agricultural pest and reliable source of protein, they became easy targets for hunters who killed them in the tens of thousands. In a matter of decades, a bird that once numbered in the billions was reduced to a few, and then, eventually, to one.

Martha, who’d grown up in captivity, had no offspring of her own. At 1 p.m. on September 1, 1914, Martha fell from her perch, never to rise again—one of the rare occasions in which historians could identify the exact moment of a species’ extinction.

Of course, the real tragedy was that the loss of the passenger pigeon was neither surprising nor unique. For as long as the Earth has sustained life, it has also seen the permanent disappearance of life forms, the dinosaurs being a particularly extreme example. But Martha’s high-profile death trained national attention on an alarming new trend. Close to a thousand animal species alone have died off in the last 500 years, and the trend is only getting worse.

1. What caused the extinction of passenger pigeons?
A.The loss of their habitats.B.The worsening of global warming.
C.The burning of fossil fuels.D.Their nutritional value and threat to farming.
2. Why are dinosaurs mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To illustrate we can do nothing to stop species extinction.
B.To show the extinction of a certain species is not a rare case.
C.To explain human activities are to blame for species extinction.
D.To stress immediate measures should be taken before it is too late.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards the new trend of species extinction?
A.Optimistic.B.Confused.C.Relieved.D.Concerned.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The most beloved bird George died.
B.Birds are the best friends of human beings.
C.The tragic loss of the last passenger pigeon.
D.The most abundant bird species are endangered.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了心里学家通过实验证明Facebook用户总是在网上是保持自我,他们在线上和线下的性格匹配的很好,因为他们只是将网络当作社交生活的媒介。

Personality used to be a one-per-customer deal: like it or not, you were who you were, and lying to a pen pal was about the closest you could get to have a different ego. That was then. With the appearance of MySpace, Facebook, and other social networking sites, a second, carefully crafted identity is now available to anyone with an Internet connection. And that has psychologists wonder: just how well do these online personalities match the person sitting at the keyboard?

The answer, it turns out, is pretty well. In a recent study of 133 undergraduates with Facebook profiles, University of Texas psychologist Samuel D. Gosling measured the correlation between personality tests online and off, and found — contrary to the assumption that social networking sites can’t capture one’s features—that the students represented themselves quite faithfully.

Gosling surveyed the group on a standard five-point personality test, which measures extroversion (外向性), agreeableness, sense of responsibility, emotional stability, and openness to new experiences. Then he rated the same subjects based only on their Facebook profiles, which usually included photos and lists of interests, from academic majors to favorite books and movies.

Gosling found a correlation between assessments in four of the five categories, with emotional stability as the only one showing no significant results across personal and online assessments.(Gosling says he was not surprised at the latter, since emotional stability is something that people are good at hiding across most media.)While extroversion showed the highest correlation, the study suggests that “openness to new experience” is perhaps better conveyed online than in person.

“Facebook users don’t tend to put a lot of personal information on their pages, ” Gosling says, so someone who posted touching personal stories, for example, might come off as oversharing without intending to.

In short, says Gosling, Facebook users aren’t generally using the site as an image buffer, a resume enhancer, or a separate self. “They just use it as a medium for social life.”

1. What is the usual assumption about social networking sites?
A.They provide good study platforms.
B.They contain totally fake information.
C.They couldn’t show one’s real nature.
D.They are friendly to various personalities.
2. Which showed no connection between personality tests online and off?
A.Openness to new experience.B.Extroversion.
C.Sense of responsibility.D.Emotional stability.
3. Why do Facebook users stay true to themselves online?
A.True personality beautifies image.
B.The site is a medium for social life.
C.Only cheats invest in a false identity.
D.Various interests can be shared there.
4. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a finding.B.To offer a recommendation.
C.To defend a viewpoint.D.To present a phenomenon.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何追求自己的梦想提出了一些建议。

Pursue Your Dreams Today, Not Tomorrow

Have you caught yourself daydreaming about your dreams? We often postpone our dreams, trapped in a cycle of delay. But why wait?     1     You don’t have to take a huge, life-changing step. You can take minute steps toward a brighter future. And start right now.

2     If you never try, you’re going to be weighed down by your regrets. You’re always going to wonder how your life would’ve turned out if you actually took a chance on yourself. Don’t let your future self be disappointed by your present self.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many people have warned you that you’re never going to succeed. Even the most successful people have had their hesitations about whether they had what it took to make it in their field.    3     Embrace a mindset of determination, knowing that success is within your reach.

At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction. If you allow your fear to get the best of you, you’re never going to forgive yourself.    4    . It’s what you would encourage your friends to do, so why aren’t you giving yourself that same push?

Sometimes, following your passion means spending a lot of your time each day. It may require making slight adjustments to your schedule, but you don’t have to sacrifice everything to follow your hearts. Try to strike a balance between your current life and your dreams.    5

Pursue your dreams now, even though that means you might need to break out of your comfort zone, and even though it means entering the unknown.

A.Ask yourself what would be worse.
B.Starting small is completely acceptable.
C.You owe it to yourself to go after your dreams.
D.New opportunities may lead to personal growth.
E.If things go well, you can gradually make further shifts.
F.You need to move past your insecurities and explore your full potential.
G.Hard as it is, it’s crucial to wave off the doubts in the back of your mind.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When starting my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the age where my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me. But then I learned before getting deeper, it can crack (变嘶哑).

The first time it happened I was so embarrassed. Surprisingly, my friends didn’t make fun of me. In fact, they didn’t even mention it. But in my self-conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they made fun of me behind my back. They weren’t having the same problem.

After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, except for strategic times I said, “cool” and “yeah”, I didn’t talk. My logic was, “If I don’t use my voice, it cannot crack.” However, I couldn’t go without talking forever. I needed a new solution.

I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my voice made me much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was much more scared about having a voice crack during class. My class had many new kids I’d never spoken with. I didn’t want their first impressions of me to be based on a voice crack.

Unfortunately, one day my concern came true. It was about two months after the beginning of the term. On the day it happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. My permanent teacher never had to, since he already knew each student, I panicked. So many thoughts rushed through my mind that I couldn’t think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word “Here”. “Easy enough, right?” I thought so until my name was called. I did my routine — cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here.” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of voice cracks.
