Milan Kundera, one of the biggest names in European literature in recent decades, has died in Paris aged 94 after a lengthy illness.
Born in 1929 into a Czech(捷克) family, he studied music with his father, who was a piano teacher and a student of the composer Janacek, and ensured Kundera received musical training at an advanced level. Kundera studied in Prague, becoming a lecturer in world literature. He joined the ruling Communist Party and initially he was an enthusiastic member. But his writing soon got him into political trouble. His first novel The Joke—a black comedy published in 1967—led to a ban on his writing in Czechoslovakia. In 1970 he was asked to leave the party after expressing support for the Prague Spring movement, the period of political movement crushed by the 1968 Soviet attack. Kundera’s political action led to his dismissal from his teaching post and his novels were removed from public libraries, and the sale of his work was banned until the fall of the Communist government in 1989.
For a short time he performed as jazz trumpeter, before emigrating to France in 1975 with his wife Vera, settling first in Rennes then Paris. He became a French citizen in 1981, two years after he was stripped of his Czech nationality, and eventually wrote in French. He soon secured a reputation as a ground-breaking author with The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The book was adapted for the screen in 1987. “It seems to me that all over the world people nowadays prefer to judge rather than to understand, to answer rather than to ask,” he shared his impression of the adaptation with his friend and writer Philip Roth in The New York Times after watching it. “So that the voice of the novel can hardly be heard over the noisy foolishness of human certainties.”
In 1985 he received the Jerusalem Prize—a prize given to writers whose works have dealt with themes of human freedom in society. And while he was a frequent competitor for the Nobel Prize for literature, the award remained distant.

More than 80 percent of global heat is absorbed by the ocean, which has a massive capacity to store and give off heat. High sea-surface temperatures are causing long-term damage to coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Corals are dying. The IPCC (政府间气候变化专门委员会) projects that up to 90 percent of coral reefs could disappear if global warming reaches 1.5℃. Another reason corals are in trouble is because of ocean acidification. Higher carbon dioxide levels have shift ed the chemistry of the ocean, making it more acidic, and corals and sea creatures have trouble growing in acidic conditions.
When ocean water warms, it expands in volume. This is a major cause of the rise in sea levels, along with the water added to the ocean by the melting of land-based glaciers (冰川). The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25 years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster. If it continues at its current rate, the rise in sea level by 2100 will be more than double the current estimates. Sea level rise leads to the destruction of coastal wetlands, flooding and damage to water ecosystems.
Temperature and precipitation (沉淀) are key elements of climate. A warmer climate means that more water rises from both the land and ocean, and a warmer atmosphere holds more of that water. Scientists have noticed that there are more heavy rainfall events. Additionally, higher water temperature in streams, lakes, and rivers lead to lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, which impacts the survival and populations of fish and other sea life.
Especially troubling are the extreme weather events that are happening more often around the world. Hurricanes are ramping up in intensity, particularly in North Atlantic. The year 2017 was a busy one for Atlantic hurricanes. Meanwhile, in the western United States, the state of California has had record-setting drought conditions, which began in 2012.
1. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1?A.Global warming has little damage to the land. | B.Ocean acidification affects the sea temperature. |
C.Coral reefs are in danger of disappearing. | D.Corals and sea creatures need critical surroundings. |
A.Sea level rise has positive effect on sea animals. |

C.Global heating is the direct cause of wetlands destruction. |
D.The rise of sea level is beyond our imagination. |
A.Increasing. | B.Failing. | C.Appearing. | D.Changing. |

People are motivated to do activities by many different factors. For me the main factors that are involved are competition, the satisfaction of completing projects, and enjoyment.
Since I am a twin, a sense of competition is deep rooted in my brain. Healthy competition can push us to do fantastic things. It makes us strive for a certain goal and gets us to do things faster. However, I do not think competition should become harmful. When anger, frustration, and depression is a result of competition, it is not healthy. Yet, competition can bring about respect, friendship, and mutual gain. In the case with my twin brother, we have pushed ourselves to be good at sports, music, school, and even at work. This competitive spirit has leaked into my life without my twin around. In a sense, I reproduce my twin brother in other people. I always try to be number one at whatever I do — or at least in the top three. There are times this attitude becomes unhealthy, as I get frustrated if I give everything to a competition or activity and produce only average results. But as the years passed, I have gotten better at handling failure and defeat. All in all, I think I finish and do well in many areas of my life for the simple fact that I want to do well in them. The feeling of doing well against competent opponents is satisfying.
I enjoy the feeling of completing an important project. For instance, last year, I finished a poetry collection with my late father’s poems and my own poems. It was an honor to him and his work. In a way, I felt that his death was not in vain and that his work was proved even more through this collection. It is hard to describe the moment of knowing when such an important project is set to rest: it is almost like you are ready to die. You sense that a chapter of your life has closed and you are now a new person. These deep emotions motivate me to complete projects on a regular basis.
The simplest factor that motivates me to do something is enjoyment. There are people who do activities they do not enjoy for decades. I am not one of those people. I can work on tasks I do not like for a while, but in the end, my main focus should be on something that I enjoy. If I find joy in doing a certain work, I engage in it for a large part of the day, or even all day without tiring. Tiredness in most cases, in my life, is due to a lack of enjoyment in the work being done.
Each person has his or her own motivating factors. I hope this reflection has allowed you to dip deeper into your true nature.
1. By the poetry collection, the author intends to ________.A.describe the sense of a chapter of his new life |
B.honor his father and himself for years to come |
C.appreciate the satisfaction of completing projects |
D.allow his father to rest and get himself to ready to die |
A.He usually lacks enjoyment in the tasks being done. |
B.He feels angry, frustrated and depressed in his tasks. |
C.He enjoys the tasks that other people are reluctant to do. |
D.He works without tiredness if he takes pleasure in tasks. |
A.Motivation | B.Competition | C.Reflection | D.Satisfaction |

So, do you want to know how to read classic books? Maybe you are excited to deal with classic literature but you don’t know where to start.
Slow down the pace. The biggest difference between modern literature and classic literature is the pace. Modern reading can often feel like a short race.
Listen to the audio(有声的)book. Sometimes the best way to devote yourself to a classic book is to listen to it. Many classic books were intended to be read aloud. Books used to be very expensive, so people shared them. This meant that a family might gather together to listen to a few chapters every night.
Choose your favourite. Finally, the key to reading classic books and actually enjoying them is to choose one that actually appeals to you. Classic Books can get mixed up into a single genre(流派)“Classic”.
A.Look up dates and history. |
B.But that’s really not the case. |
C.Don’t be afraid to look things up. |
D.However, classic literature is more of a marathon. |
E.A character list can keep who is related to whom in check. |
F.Listening to audio books is a lovely way to continue that tradition. |
G.Or perhaps you’ve tried reading classics before and don’t really get the main points. |
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
It’s 5 p.m., and you’ve just realized that report you’ve been putting off is due tomorrow. It’s time to buckle down and open your computer. Actually, you should probably make dinner first. You usually like cooking, though it’s hard to enjoy with this work hanging over your head, and oh—it’s actually pretty late! Maybe you should just try again in the morning. This is the cycle of procrastination, and I promise you, we have all been there.
Procrastination is when we avoid a task we said we would do, for no good reason, despite expecting our behavior to bring negative consequences. Obviously, it’s irrational to do something you expect to harm you. But ironically, procrastination is the result of our bodies trying to protect us, specifically by avoiding a task we see as threatening.
We’re most likely to procrastinate tasks that evoke negative feelings, such as dread, incompetence, and insecurity. Because procrastination is motivated by our negative feelings, some individuals are more susceptible (易受影响的) to it than others. People who have difficulty regulating their emotions and those who struggle with low self-esteem are much more likely to procrastinate. However, it’s a common misconception that all procrastinators are lazy. When you’re feeling lazy, you’re more likely to sit around doing nothing than distract yourself with unimportant tasks. In fact, many people procrastinate because they care too much. Procrastinators often report a high fear of failure, putting things off because they’re afraid their work won’t live up to their high standards.
Whatever the reason for procrastination, the results are often the same. Procrastinators are likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, ongoing feelings of shame and physical ailments (轻病) associated with high stress.
So, how can we break the cycle of procrastination?
Traditionally, people thought procrastinators needed to cultivate discipline and practice strict time management. But today, many researchers feel the exact opposite. Being too hard on yourself can layer additional bad emotions onto a task. What we really need to do is to address and reduce these negative emotions.
1. What is procrastination?2. What kinds of people are more likely to procrastinate?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Ø Procrastinators are affected by negative emotions, are all lazy and are likely to suffer from physical ailments associated with high stress.
4. What strategies can you use to break the cycle of procrastination in your daily life? (In about 40 words)
