1 . Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.

Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world’s oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy (树冠层) of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.

Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants’ way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.

They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won’t keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity (湿气) of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.

3 . At the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of writers combined creative writing with statement of national identity. China’s Lu Xun is a familiar example, along with W.B. Yeats, Ireland’s greatest poet and the founder of the patriotic “Celtic Twilight” cultural movement. A third great literary patriot is the Bengali and Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore(1861-1941).

Tagore renewed Bengali writing, introducing the common people’s language into poetry and writing about the common people too. By showing the value of Bengali literature, he showed the reasons for the independence of India as a nation. It’s no surprise that he strongly supported his country’s independence from the British.

Tagore wasn’t just a poet, but also an novelist, a playwright, and an essayist. The range of his talents made him famous not only in India, but across the world.

His fame led to invitations to travel; on his journeys abroad he met with other famous figures in the arts, politics and sciences. He was W.B, Yeats’ guest in Ireland and once meet Einstein, as well as meeting many world leaders. The inspiration that came from such a varied life fed into his work, giving it an international character.

Since it is so varied, it’s difficult to generalize about Tagore’s writing. But it’s impossible not to notice a strong awareness of loss in it. Take these lines from his poem Golden Boat, included in a book that won him in 1913, world literature’s highest honor, the Nobel Prize. Tagore imagines life as a boat which floats on, leaving him, a dead man, on the shore “All I had achieved was carried off on the golden boat-only I was left behind.”

1. How are Lu Xun, Yeats and Tagore similar?
A.They were all at the beginning of the 20th century.B.They are all wealthy writers.
C.They are all great literary patriots.D.They all won the Noble Prize.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Tagore’s writing style.
B.Tagore’s life in India.
C.Tagore’s interest in Bengali literature.
D.Tagore’s support for his country’s independence.
3. What gave an international character to Tagore’s work?
A.His fame.B.His journeys abroad.
C.Other famous figures in the world.D.His varied life.
4. By taking lines from the poem golden boats, the author means to prove ________.
A.Tagore’s love for his motherland.
B.Tagore’s talents in varied fields.
C.Tagore’s awareness of loss in his work.
D.Tagore’s great achievement in world literature.

4 . Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a necessary part of the learning process. But too often we express to our children either by words or by actions that failure is somethings to be ashamed of.

Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions-he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.

I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, admired her. But even warm-hearted, loving Mary was baffled by this little boy.

Then one morning, we were working on math problems. Donnie had copied the problems with pains-taking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary. But when I returned, Donnie was in tears. He’d missed the third problem.

Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a container filled with pencils.

“Look, Donnie,” she said, “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed them on his desk. “See these pencils , Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes too. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you must learn to do, too.”

She kissed him and continued. “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a slight of a smile.

The pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small successes, gradually reminded him that it’s all right to make mistakes — as long as you erase them and try again.

1. Why didn’t Donnie play classroom games as other children?
A.Because he was afraid to fail.
B.Because he spent too much time on his work.
C.Because he had made too many mistakes.
D.Because he couldn’t work together with his classmates.
2. Which of the following can replace the underline word “baffled” in Paragraph 3?
A.Encouraged.B.Puzzled.C.Praised.D.Disliked.
3. The reason why Donnie treasured the pencil left by Mary Anne may be that ________.
A.It was the first present from Mary Anne
B.He could use it to erase the mistakes he had made
C.It was a reminder of the possibility that everyone makes mistakes
D.It was the prize for his success.
4. Which of the following statements can best describe the main theme of the passage?
A.Failure is the mother of success.B.Practise makes prefect.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way.D.No pain, no gain.

6 . People usually become more personal and hide less of themselves when using email. Researchers from Open University in Britain have found in a recent study that there are good reasons for this.

The team of researchers asked 83 pairs of students, all strangers to each other, to solve a problem. They had to discuss this question: If only five people in the world could be saved from a world disaster, who should they be?The pairs of students had to talk over the problem either face to face or by computers. Dr. Johnson said, “They told their partners four times as much about themselves when they talked over the Internet as when they talked face to face. When the computers were fitted with cameras so that students could see each other, this limited the personal side of the conversation.”

Generally the information was not rather personal. It was mainly about things such as where they went to school, or where they used to live. But some students discussed their love stories, and personal childhood experiences.

Dr Johnson believes that emailing encourages people to focus on themselves. And when they do this, they become more open, especially if there are no cameras. “If you cannot see the other person, it becomes easier to talk about yourself. This is because you are not thinking what the other person is thinking of you. So emailing has become the modern way of talking,” said Dr. Johnson. However, this style of talking is not quite new. “In the 19th century people started to use the ‘telegraph’ to communicate. Now the same kind of thing has happened and people ended up speaking more freely.

Dr. Johnson thinks that emailers need to know about these effects of emailing, especially when they start work in a company. “If you don’t know about it, you could find yourself saying more about yourself than you wanted to.”

C.talk more freely in emails than usualD.discuss any subject that one wants to

7 . Losing something important can be a very anxious experience. If someone finds it and returns it to you, it is often a great relief. Authorities in Guangzhou have created a new regulation (规定) to encourage more people to return lost items.

The regulation says that people who hand in lost belongings will get 10 percent of the item’s value as a reward from public security authorities (公安部门). If the owner can’t be found, the finder will still be rewarded with 10 percent of the item’s value after it is sold at a public auction (拍卖). The rewards will come from government funding.

The regulation has caused heated public debate. Opponents say that it will rob the act of its nobility (高尚), adding that such good behavior should be done out of selflessness, Qianjiang Evening News reported.

However, there are also people who welcome the regulation, saying it will encourage more people to do the right thing, Beijing Daily reported. After all, not everybody is willing to return lost property (财物) to its owner. Finders will have to take care of lost items and spend time looking for their owners. The regulation gives finders the right to ask for a reward, which is in the best interest of both parties.

Countries like Japan and Germany already have similar laws. According to Japan’s Lost Goods Law, people who find a lost item should quickly return it to the owner or turn it over to the police. The owner should provide the finder with a reward of 5 to 20 percent of the item’s value.

This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. This country has the world’s highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of game players who are addicted to online games.

In 2004, a young man died after playing online games almost nonstop for 86 hours. A 12-year-old boy stole $ 16,000 from his father to continue online games which he could not get away from. Such problems are spreading to other parts of Asia as well. In 2005, it was reported that about 80 percent of China’s 13.8 million online game players were under 25. And many of these were said to be addicted. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.

Dr. Sue–Huei Chen, a psychologist, discovered some signs of at-risk people. Such people often go online to escape from their problems. And they usually have no friendship or good social skills. 9 . Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos? Ask some people and most of them will say yes. “Pay-for-knowledge” has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these “pay-for-knowledge” products are from language learning to gardening or baby-caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. “Pay-for-knowledge” is on the rise(兴起).

The industry of “pay-for-knowledge” has proved to be lucrative. It promises possibilities of turning information into money. What’s more, this is a reflection(反映)of respect for knowledge and talents.

10 . How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.

About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could measure the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows from one container to another, When the water reaches a certain level, it moves a lever (控制杆) and this shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.

In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1,500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1936 the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s easy for ordinary people to own a clock, People began depending on then more and more to ran business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
