文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了人们说“不”很困难的几点原因。

1 . Why Do We Find It Hard to Say “No”?

As we all know, saying “no” to others is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”.     1     Below are common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”:

2     You are a kind soul at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.

●Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face saving is important.     3

●Wanting to be agreeable. You don’t want to alienate (疏远) yourself from the group because you’re not in agreement. So you agree to others’ requests.

●Fear of conflict.     4     This might lead to an ugly confrontation (面对). Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects in the future.

5     Perhaps you are worried saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my friends’ wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion chances in the future.

A.Wanting to help others.
B.Fear of losing chances.
C.Wanting to keep a good relationship.
D.I slowly realized I needed to learn to say “no”.
E.You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.
F.It means not making others look bad or lose face.
G.To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us from it.

3 . How to Feel Connected

It's easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today's fast-paced world.     1     You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:

Consider why you feel disconnected. Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address it.     2     Ask yourself these questions: Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much? Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face-to-face communication? Do you lack friendships that are satisfying?

Interact with people in person. Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person.     3     You can also take steps to feel more connected by making small-talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.

4     Your loved ones could feel shy, so you may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Asking them to open the doors can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.

Show appreciation.     5     Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.

A.Ask others what they need from you.
B.A simple “thank you” goes a very long way.
C.Feeling connected gives people great confidence.
D.A gift should be delivered to friends on special occasions.
E.Sometimes you can feel isolated and distant from the ones you love.
F.Attending family events can help strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
G.Targeting your efforts toward those issues allows you to close that distance more effectively.

4 . During the rosy years of elementary school(小学), I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.

Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables’ plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there’s the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.

Enviableas the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein’s studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are “most likely to engage(从事) in dangerous and risky behavior.”

In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys(调查研究). “We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us."

1. What sort of girl was the author in her early years of elementary school?
A.Unkind.B.Lonely.
C.Generous.D.Cool.
2. What did Dr. Prinstein’s study find about the most liked kids?
A.They appeared to be aggressive.
B.They tended to be more adaptable.
C.They enjoyed the highest status.
D.They performed well academically.

5 . Rules for proper gift giving

When you are planning to give a gift, it is important to think about the receiver. As the gift is for the other person, it should be suitable for his or her particular personality. Is he or she a family member or a close friend?    1    These are valuable things to keep in mind when choosing the right gift for someone.

At a dinner party, it is usually proper to show up with some sort of gratitude(感谢) for the host.     2     This type of gift does not have to be expensive. It just needs to be something that can serve as a sign of appreciation. This can be done in the form of flowers or a bottle of wine.

When someone gives you a gift, you generally want to give one in return.     3     There are situations where people give gifts and do not expect anything in return. This occurs when you are celebrating your birthday or graduation. If you receive gifts from your friends, then just a thank-you note will be enough.

When in a situation where you have received something expensive and are expected to give one in return, many people feel pressured to give a gift of greater or equal value to the one that was gifted to them. However, it is important to distance yourself from these assumptions.     4

Well, what should you do when you have forgotten to send a gift? It happens to all of us. Whether it is a family member’s birthday or a friend’s graduation ceremony, forgetting to give a gift is awkward. So, it can be difficult to find the right way to make up for forgetfulness. However, before you begin to panic, know that a late gift is better than no gift.     5

A.However, this is not always the case.
B.Do you have to give a gift to your friends?
C.Gifts should be tied to meaning instead of dollar value.
D.In Eastern cultures, gifts are given before the guest leaves.
E.Does he or she enjoy big gifts or prefer a bunch of flowers?
F.So, send your gift with an apologetic note and all should be forgiven.
G.They have invited you over to their home and that should be acknowledged.

Sports should help a man to learn fairness, not only in games but also in life.If two teams play     1     game, one team must lose.If a dozen     2     (team) attend an athletic competition, one team will get the most points and all the     3     eleven teams will get     4     points. If a school team comes out last, that is no loss of face.    5     that team and that school must do is to admit that it     6    (lose).The only intelligent reaction     7     defeat must be:next year we will do our best to come out on top, because from now on we will devote     8     (we) to a stricter course of training under competent instructors.

Lessons     9    (learn) in sports can help us in our dealing with other people. But even more     10    (value) are the lessons learned in extra-curricular activities in school:in speech, dramatic and musical contests,in “house” activities, and, especially,in the student council.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A worried call came into Jimmy Gill’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash-but her wedding ring was put inside.

Gill didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours scanning footage(影片片段)from 16 different surveillance(监控),cameras, watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a jacket approached the bench, put something hurried in his pocket, and walked off. Gill posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I didn’t want to accuse him, ” he said. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”

Within hours, Gill got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from one of his friends. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gill he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头)into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.

Gill, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock. There, they got to talking, and Prather revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gill, a father of two with another on the way, look closely at Prather-his small build, his pale cheeks-and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He would be going to jail,” Gill says. “I had to help him somehow.”

Wind whistled round the corner of the house, thunder rolled and rain beat against the windows — not a night to be outside but rather to sit by the fire. Thanks to the solid walls and roof overhead, I could imagine Dr. Frankenstein's frightening creation wandering on such a night. I was alone, my husband away and the nearest neighbor a quarter miles down the road. Alone, that is, except for Lassie, a hairy, black and white dog, who sat with her head on my lap, her intelligent, brown eyes gazing up at me as if to say, don't worry, we'll be all right.

Through the years she was with us, she proved time and time again to be a superb judge of character. We never knew if it was a result of her sense of smell or sound-but, whatever it was, she definitely possessed a talent we humans lacked. On first meeting she would either wag the tip of her tail a couple of times to indicate that the visitor was acceptable, or slightly curl her top lip, exposing her sharp teeth which told you to be alert. Always accurate, her gift was never more obvious than on this night.

The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again, much longer this time. Whoever was there was not going away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the door. My heart beat fast and my mouth went dry, for there, stood the monster himself. A twisted body under a heavy overcoat, one shoulder bumped higher than the other and his head leaned slightly forward and to one side.

“May I use your phone?” The voice came from somewhere back in his throat and, although the request was polite, his tone was rude.

Reaching in his pocket and producing a piece of paper, he handed it to me. I refused to take it. Believing he might try and force his way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend the home.

Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of her tail wagging.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last year I graduated from college and landed a job in the local company. I was lucky because the economy was declining and a lot of companies went out of business. There were many unemployed graduates. That was a difficult time for everyone. I cherished my precious job and worked so hard. One day, I walked on the street after finishing my work. I saw many beautiful decorations, such as colorful lights, the familiar song and so on. I suddenly realized Christmas was coming. I had promised my nephew that when I found a job, I would send him a Christmas gift. Fortunately I still had a little time to buy one for him. And on that very day I witnessed how people cared for each other,

I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was looking through the teddy bears beside her father when she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokemon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. He had money in his hand. However, it looked no more than five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video games. Each time he showed one to his father, his father shook his head, “No”.

Rather disappointed, the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers instead. After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokemon video games. She excitedly picked up one lying on top of the others, and raced down toward the checkout. I picked up my purchases and followed the girl and her father.
