4 . "Smile!" I shouted, holding a yellow sign up on a busy street in Seattle. We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We had two aims. One was to try out our new "Smile!" signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market. The other was to raise $80 by doing street performances, enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.

We weren't sure how people would react (回应) to our signs. I nervously raised up our signs and shouted, "Hi, there!" to a young couple. They looked over and felt confused. Then they read our signs and broke into a smile. Before long, some tourists wanted to take a photo with us and some strangers stopped to ask us about our signs.

In fact, we paid so close attention to our "Smile!" project that we forgot the other aim. Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland. We sat down to watch a blind musician play the guitar while thinking about what to do. He was packing up when a passing crowd kicked down his change bowl. He stumbled (绊倒) into the crowd. We rushed to help him, but another man moved more quickly to help him.

Once the musician had his money safely returned, we ran over to meet the strange helper and said, "We just wanted to praise you for your good deed." He smiled, looking at our signs. "Your trip reminds me of something similar I once did when I was young," he said. "Look! I'd like to donate (捐赠)." We told him, "No, thanks! We are fine. We've collected plenty of money." We lied. "Please let me donate. It will make me feel like I'm a part of this adventure," he insisted. And then the stranger opened his wallet and pulled out four $20 bills. The money was exactly what we had intended to raise that day. We were astonished. It seemed as if he had known somehow.

1. What's the main purpose of the road trip?
A.To spread kindness and joy.
B.To invite more people to join in the trip.
C.To raise money for a trip to Portland.
D.To encourage people to take happy photos.
2. How did people react to the "Smile!" signs later?
A.Disappointed.B.Worried.C.Interested.D.Moved.
3. According to the last paragraph, why did the strange helper want to donate money?
A.Because he felt pity for the author.
B.Because he wanted to join in the project.
C.Because he hoped to help the homeless.
D.Because he felt sorry for his impoliteness.
4. What does the underlined word "astonished" in the last paragraph most probably mean?

5 . Small talk has a reputation for being uninteresting, and for good reason. Pointing out the fact that it’s raining seems as ridiculous as pointing out the fact that you have a head—you’re fully aware of both things, and don’t require an outsider to confirm them. But despite being evident and often painfully dull, small talk has an important role to fulfil, enabling us to leap over a number of social obstacles towards improved, meaningful interaction.

Humans can be sensitive souls. We each have our boundaries and lists of potential upsets, which when broken, cause us to either gently back away to an alternative position in the room, or become cross at the person. Small talk is first a way to test the waters with an unfamiliar person, so that you may better understand their personality. When finding yourself positioned closely to a person who you know little about, it’s much safer to point out the rainy sky than to share your political views on a sensitive topic. Until you know the person better, heavier topics should probably be kept under wraps, so you won’t find yourself on the receiving end of a cold stare.

Though insignificant, small talk still has great power. When talking with fellow humans, much of our soul is exposed through non-verbal communication. A response to “how was your weekend” can unveil much about the person’s character. The length of their response might indicate their level of self-confidence; the tone of speaking might show how agreeable a person is; their slightly lowered head, as if protecting themselves from attack, a possible sign of a regrettable history of bullying.

As more of a person’s character is revealed, we have the insight needed to determine whether to broach more significant topics—the things that we actually want to talk about. Conversation is a great educator, and deep conversation establish lasting bonds with our fellow humans, forming precious friendships that paint our lives with vibrant colors. Such friendships begin with small talk.

1. What is described in the first paragraph?
A.The first stage of human interaction.
B.Ridiculous human behavior in communication.
C.Absence of communication between strangers.
D.The difficulty of having deep conversations.
2. Why do people find themselves “on the receiving end of a cold stare”?
A.Because they are fond of heavy subjects.
B.Because they are enthusiastic about politics.
C.Because they are too sensitive about topics.
D.Because they fail to manage interpersonal distance.
3. What might be a sign of friendliness according to paragraph 3?
A.The length of the answer.B.The quality of the voice.
C.The position of the head.D.The distance between speakers.
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A.Reputation of Small TalkB.Ways of Understanding Personality
C.Significance of Small TalkD.Challenges of Deep Conversation

8 . Plenty of children ask their parents for a pet. And now it might be harder for parents to refuse their requests, as a new study shows that young adults who care for an animal have stronger social relationships. American scientists also found that looking after a pet might also help teenagers develop better social skills.

Animals can have positive effects on children, but little is known about the benefits that caring for animals every day can bring to young people. “The young teenagers in the study who cared for pets felt more connected to other people,” said Dr. Megan Mueller, a professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, Massachusetts.

Dr. Mueller surveyed more than 500 young people aged between 18 and 26 about their attitudes towards animals. Their responses were used to measure their positive youth development characteristics such as caring, confidence and connection, as well as feelings of depression. The study found that young adults who cared for animals helped their friends or family more and showed stronger leadership qualities than those who did not look after a pet. The more actively they took part in the pet’s care, the higher they scored on their sociable deeds.

“We can’t draw causal links with this study, but it is a good starting point to better understand the role of animals in our lives, especially when we are young,” said Dr. Mueller. To further develop the research, scientists need to look at how specific features of human experiences are connected with animal experiences, as well as how these relationships develop over time, and look at a larger number of people.

1. If teenagers look after pets, they will probably _____.
A.Score highly at school.B.Develop better social skills.
C.Become leaders in the future.D.Have only positive characteristics.
2. What does Dr. Mueller mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Children should love pets.
B.Little is known about pets.
C.Children’s growth is connected with pets.
D.Pets can benefit children.
3. What will scientists probably do to further the study?
A.To study more people.B.To communicate with animals.
C.To care for more animals.D.To measure youth development characteristics.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A scientific journal.B.A health magazine.
C.A storybook.D.An education program.

9 . The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.    1    Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.    2

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.    3    If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

4    Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.     5    At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A.It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B.Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
C.Everyone was new to the network once.
D.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

10 . “Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.

With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”

Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedmam. I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.

An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out—that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? That answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.” In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感).

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.

1. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to ________.
A.introduce a topicB.present an argument
C.describe the charactersD.clarify his writing purpose
2. In the author’s opinion, many people like to gossip because it ________.
A.gives them a feeling of pleasure
B.help them to make more friends
C.makes them better at telling stories
D.enables them to meet important people
3. Professor David Wilson think that gossip can ________.
A.provide students with written rules
B.help people watch their own behaviors
C.force school to improve student handbooks
D.attract the police’s attention to group behaviors
4. What advice does the author give in the passage?
A.Never become a gossiperB.Stay away from gossipers
C.Don’t let gossip turn into liesD.Think twice before you gossip.
