2 . Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people don’t have it. Common reasons for not eating breakfast include shortage of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting (节食).

Breakfast simply means “break the fast”. You eat nothing for at least 6 to 12 hours each night. Even though you have been sleeping, you have still been burning energy. And in the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.

A good breakfast should provide up to 1/3 of your total calories (卡路里) that your body needs for the day. Generally speaking, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t interest you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half your dinner for breakfast in the morning.

If you still aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or bread or have nutritious (有营养的) mid-morning snack later when you are hungry.

So, you say you’re on a diet. Some people are afraid that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That’s because your body is working correctly. Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in fact you’re probably not.

Not eating breakfast may cause you to overeat, because a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel hungry later. To make things worse, since your body is in a slowed state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories well. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you may not become hungry so easily and eat too much when you have meals.

Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, your choice is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.

School Gardens Could Help Children Try More Vegetables

It’s not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening program in schools can increase children’s vegetable intake(摄入量) .

How the Study Was Carried Out

The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grades 3-5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.

The Benefits Children Could Get

The study found that vegetable intake if the children who grew their own produce increased greatly across the year. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic diseases(慢性疾病). Not only are there benefits to health, increasing the variety of vegetables children are exposed(接触)to may also make mealtimes much easier.” Children who are often exposed to a variety of vegetables are more likely to try new foods,” explains Dr. Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food.

28

Any opportunity to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest,” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together.   Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful messages. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.

Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.

1. What did children do in the gardening program?
A.They did research on new plants.B.They grew fresh produce at school.

4 . Food for thought

It’s hard to turn down hamburgers, French fries, potato chips. And all of the other junk food that seemed to call out to us. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you are between the ages of 10 and 19.

“Junk food shapes adolescent(青春期的) brains in ways that impair their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control impulsive (冲动的)behaviors,” said Amy Reichelt. A brain and nutrition specialist at Western University, Canada. “It may even up a teen’s risk of depression(抑郁) and anxiety.”

Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies, including their own, about how poor food choices can impact adolescent brains. They found adolescents are more sensitive than any other age group to processed(经过加工的) foods with a lot of fat and sugar and their brains are not yet fully formed.

Adolescent brains are still developing the ability to assess risks and control actions. The prefrontal cortex(前额皮质) is a part of brain that tells us we should not eat chips all the time and helps us resist the urge. However, this region is the last to mature—it doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s.

Meanwhile, teen brains get more buzz(兴奋) from rewards. The parts of the brain that make us feel good when we do something pleasurable—like eating tasty foods—are fully developed by the teens year.

In fact, these regions are even more sensitive when we are young. That is because dopamine(多巴胺), a natural chemical that lifts our mood when we experience something good, is especially active in adolescent brains.

Therefore, the teen brain has two strikes against it when it comes to resisting junk food. “It has a heightened(增强的) drive for rewards and reduced self-regulation(自我调节),” said Reichelt.

So what’s the best way to say no to junk foods? Researchers propose to exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food cues(线索). Exercise also triggers(触发) the body to make a protein that helps brain cells grow and boosts connections between the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions. The prefrontal cortex thus can work better to help us make wise decisions and control our impulses.

6 . Diet drinks may taste good, but they might not bring happiness. A new study finds that people who drink diet sodas or fruit drinks are more likely to be diagnosed (诊断) with depression.

The study doesn’t show that diet drinks cause depression and the researchers stress their findings don’t provide an explanation. They looked at more than 263,900 U.S. adults ages 50 to 71 who answered questions about their beverage (饮料) consumption(摄入量) between the years 1995 and 1996. About 10 years later (from 2004 to 2006), the same people were asked if a doctor had diagnosed them with depression since the year 2000.

People who regularly drank four or more cans of any type of soda a day were 30 percent more likely to have received a diagnosis of depression than people who did not drink soda, said Dr. Honglei Chen of the National Institutes of Health, who led the study. The risk of depression was especially high for people who drank diet soda — a 31 percent increased risk compared to a 22 percent increased risk for those who drank regular soda, the researchers said.

Those who drank four or more cans of diet fruit drinks were 51 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink diet fruit drinks.

By contrast, people who drank four or more cups of coffee a day were 10 percent less likely to have been diagnosed with depression compared to non-coffee drinkers.

The study only found an association, and did not determine (确定) whether diet soda or fruit drinks caused depression. Although the researchers took into account factors that could affect the results, such as age, sex, education, smoking status, physical activity, body mass index (BMI) and energy intake, it’s possible other circumstances, such as a family history of depression or stressful life events, could explain the association.

A family history of depression and stressful life events are some of the biggest predictors of depression, said Emma Robertson-Blackmore, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who was not involved in the study. In addition, older people are more likely to experience stressful life events, including the death of a loved one, job changes or illnesses, Robertson-Blackmore said.

However, the findings agree with those of a few previous studies that found a link between frequent consumption of sweetened beverages and a higher prevalence (流行程度) of depression, the researchers said. (Diet sodas and fruit drinks are sweetened, but their sweeteners contain no calories.)

“More research is needed to confirm these findings, and people with depression should continue to take depression medications prescribed by their doctors,” said Chen.
