1 . Do you often eat candies and desserts? Are you crazy about cola and milk tea? Do you know these snacks and drinks have a lot of sugar? Eating too much sugar causes many health problems, even leads to high blood sugar level, which could bring us diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, liver disease or even depression.

Besides sweet food and drinks, there is hidden sugar in everyday food. For example, there is much sugar in bread and yogurt. It is hard for us to avoid sugar, but do we have to stay away from it completely? That’s impossible and unnecessary. After all, sugar is one of the energy sources that we need. What we must do is to control the sugar intake.

Here are some possible ways to help you. First, get to know how much sugar we need a day. World Health Organization (WHO) suggests adults and children should limit sugar intake to 25 grams or less every day. Then, check the ingredients list and buy food with the lowest sugar. What’s more, pay attention to our blood sugar level. Jessie Inchauspe, a French bestselling writer, shares some of her ideas to balance our blood sugar level.

· Eat foods in the right order.

Eat your vegetables first, followed by eggs and meat, then rice or bread.

· Eat vegetables before each meal.

It is better to have hot or cold green salad.

· Reach for vinegar (醋) before you eat.

This is having a teaspoon of vinegar in a glass of water before meals.

· Move after you eat, within 70 minutes.

It could be going for a 10-minute walk, doing a short workout, or doing some chores.

By now, you’ve already known how to improve sugar intake patterns. However, what we do is more important than what we say. Small steps can add up. Let’s begin to make changes on our own.

Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki say this diet is not enough with variety (多样化) and good for our pet dogs, either.

The scientists discovered that the foods a dog might find such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study. 4,500 of them were under 6 months old, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what food they had fed their pets and how often. When the dogs grew older, about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms (慢性肠胃不适症状). However, if dogs had had a mixed diet while young, it was 22%less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.

Parents and doctors have the same worry over especially low birthweight newborns.     1     A trend (趋势) has therefore developed to make special formulas (配方) of extra nutrients and protein-rich foods for these tiny babies. Unfortunately, a British study has found that this practice could have negative (负面的) long-term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood.

Between 1993 and 1995, Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age. The babies’ moms had decided not to breastfeed (用母乳喂养).

2     The rest received a formula with more nutrients and 28 percent more protein than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was compared to that of 175 similarly low birthweight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their first 9 months.     3     They found 83 babies from the normal-formula group, 70 babies from the extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breast fed group.

4     According to the latest data, children who had received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressures than those in the other two groups.

No matter how big a child is at birth, he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. But reaching one’s adult size at a slow-to-moderate speed may have a lot of benefits, as Singhal says.     5

A.The results were quite surprising.
B.These babies have very little energy because they are so small.
C.His advice to parents: Be patient. Don’t rush a child’s growth.
D.Half of these children were given a normal infant (幼儿) formula for 9 months.
E.Six to eight years later, the researchers gave the children a series of measurements and tests.

8 . Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.

①Eat a variety of food, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (营养) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.

②Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙) to grow strong bones, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks (含糖饮料), like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories (热量), not important nutrition.

③Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.

④Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies and playing computer games. The more time you spend on these siting-down activities, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball and doing other activities like riding and swimming. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了孩子们饮水的重要性。

10 . Last month, calls were made to raise the taxes for sugary drinks. This shows growing worry over the amount of sugar that kids are taking in through cola, juices and other beverages (饮料), a new study has found that one in five children did not drink any water on a given day and that those kids took in more calories (卡路里) from sweetened beverages than kids who did drink water.

The study surveyed on 8, 400 children across the country between the ages of 2 and 19. Researchers found that around 20 percent of children are reported drinking no water throughout the day. And they took in almost twice as many calories than kids who did drink some water. Overall, the children drank 132 calories of colas and other sugary beverages per day. That number dropped to 112 calories if they drank any water. But kids who didn’t drink any water at all took in an average of 210 calories from sweetened drinks.

This can cause a lot of problems. “Those calories don’t provide much nutrition (营养) and they can add up,” according to professor Asher, a scientist in public health. Sugary drinks have been linked to a number of diseases, such as childhood obesity, dental problems and high cholesterol. “I’ve seen 6-year-olds with high cholesterol and teenagers with Type 2 diabetes,” said Natalie, a doctor for children. “These are diseases we used to see in their grandparents.”

“Kids should take in water every single day, and the first beverage choice for kids should be water,” according to Natalie. “Because if they’re not drinking water, like sugar-sweetened beverages, that are less healthy and have more calories.” Adults should take up their responsibility to encourage kids to drink water so that they don’t take in something less healthful. And things need to be done to ensure childhood health.

1. What can we learn about children’s water drinking from the survey?
A.Each of the children took in 210 calories per day.
B.Most of the children drank enough water every day.
C.Children who drank less water would take in more calories.
D.The children who drank water took in twice as many calories.
2. How does the writer support his idea in paragraph 3?
A.By showing opinions from experts.
B.By listing numbers from a survey.
C.By comparing interesting facts.
D.By telling stories from grandparents.
3. What would probably happen to children who drink sweetened beverages instead of water?
A.They would lose weight.
B.They would have health problems.
C.They would live a happy life.
D.They would have more nutrition.
4. What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To describe the harm of sweetened beverages.
B.To compare water with sweetened beverages.
C.To suggest some ways to help children live a healthier life.
D.To introduce the importance of water drinking among children.
