One study in the Netherlands has found that children will be more willing to (更愿意) eat vegetables if they are rewarded for trying them.
Britt van Belkom worked on the study. She said, “Young children have to try a new vegetable 8 to 10 times before they like it. So we looked at whether asking children to try some vegetables over and over again would make them more willing to eat their greens. We were also interested in whether providing a fun reward would make a difference.
Almost 600 children aged 1-4 took part in the study. They were divided into 3 groups. Group A got vegetables to try every day, but there was no reward for trying them. Group B didn’t get any vegetables to try or any rewards. Group C got vegetables to try and then a reward. The rewards were not about food like candies or chocolates, but things such as stickers (贴纸) and toys.
Before the study, Britt asked all the children how willing they were to try vegetables, and then asked the same question 3 months later.
The children in Group A didn’t change their willingness to try vegetables. And the children in Group B were actually less willing to try vegetables! However, the children in Group C were willing to eat more vegetables at the end of the study.
Britt said, “Rewarding children for tasting vegetables seems to also increase their willingness to try other vegetables.”
What rewards would encourage you to eat more healthily and is it a good idea to reward healthy eating? Anyway, share the way with your parents.
